If your parents told you that you were going to be packed up and taken to a country in which you couldn’t speak a word of their native language, at the age of 15, you would have been excused if you came with a sense of resentment towards the cards you were dealt. But our next guest, Alex Vynokur, has seen his move to Australia far differently.
Alex Vynokur is the Founder of BetaShares – an investment manager serving thousands of advisers and over 1 million investors, Betashares currently manages over $37 billion in assets across the broadest range of ETFs on the market. Founded in 2009, the company is focused on its three key principles of providing simplicity, cost-effectiveness through their low fee structures, and transparency.
Alex’s journey from Ukraine to Australia presented to him opportunities that he had never thought possible.
His intellect was apparent from a very young age, with a strong academic prowess earning him an academic
scholarship and paralegal position at a law firm where he got his first taste of the “big city life”.
Attracted by the opportunities that presented themselves in the fields of law and finance, Alex examined the various cogs of the corporate ladder but was somewhat deterred by the hierarchal approach adopted by many institutions of his time.
Alex’s entrepreneurial capabilities equipped with his financial prowess led to the ideation of what would become BetaShares. An organisation that debugged the notion that investing was only for the rich and made cost-effective investing opportunities through the form of ETFs available to investors of all classes. Since founding the business back in 2009, Alex has now grown the business into a $37bn behemoth that records 1 in every 9 Australian investors on its books.
In today’s episode we unpack with Alex his transition out of the oppressive soviet regime to Australian soil.
We explore the idea of meritocracy in the workplace and how this has driven much of Alex’s approach to business and staff at BetaShares.
We understand the genesis for the ETF style-products offered by BetaShares.
Finally, we gain an insight on the BetaShares strategy and their recent strategic acquisitions – particularly in the superannuation landscape.
We hope you enjoy!
