The Sustainable Hour

Switching the narrative around

Listen Later

Guests in The Sustainable Hour no 311 on 29 April 2020 are Damien Cole from Kindness Pandemic TV, James Conlan from Environment Victoria and Glenn Todd, director of Action Skills.

Even though our individual habits have changed radically in the last month because of the pandemic, relatively little carbon emissions have decreased. Today Colin Mockett‘s Global Outlook concentrates on a report from CarbonBrief.org. He gives the results of scientists who have crunched the numbers for the decrease in CO2-emissions world-wide during the coronavirus. They pose the questions: is this enough? And what’s the best way for our economy to spring spring back after the coronavirus releases its grip? Business as before, or a transition to a safer, more just and healthy world?

The first of our three guests is Glenn Todd from Action Skills. Glenn tells us about why he thinks digital skills are so important for campaigning today and how he has established a course to teach grassroots activists how to use such skills to advantage: “Sharing skills to empower community.”

Glenn is followed by James Conlan from Environment Victoria. He tells us about the organisation’s campaign to raise awareness in the real estate industry about the importance of putting emphasis on sustainability features in the houses they rent out and sell. Combined with this, they are also encouraging house renters and buyers to ask about these features in their interactions with real estate agents.

Finally we have a regular guest in Damien Cole. This time Damo talks about his team’s latest initiative: The Kindness Pandemic TV Channel. He and co-host Tom Robb from ‘Life Is The Way’ intend to produce a regular tv program featuring local people who have dreams of a better world and work each day to that end. As part of this discussion Jackie talks about an initiative that she is involved in: ‘Ocean Grove Barwon Heads Locally Made’.

We hope that you get as much out of this show as we did in producing it. Stay safe to avoid the spread of the coronavirus.

And don’t forget to put in a submission in response to the City of Greater Geelong’s
