At this time of year things are moving at incredible speed. In fact, many things are changing and shifting as we head towards a new year – people are moving jobs, houses, schools. We are changing our goals for the year ahead. Many of us are moving from our fast-paced schedule and into the slower pace of holidays. The reality is, there isn’t much that is constant in our ever-changing world. Yet the God we worship and whom we celebrate during the Christmas season is constant and unchanging. We hope you can join us as we stop to be reminded of why this characteristic of our God is so significant and so important.

The core message about Jesus is incredibly powerful and remains ‘good news’ today – as it did when it was initially shared around 2000 years ago. Yet somehow it can feel incredibly scary to try and explain it with others in those moments when we get the opportunity. One of the most powerful ways we can share the good news about Jesus is through the story of what He has done in our own lives. We sing along to our car radios on the way to work, we sing along to our footy club’s theme song, we sing happy birthday to loved ones at parties. Yet there is something a little strange about standing in a room with a bunch of people you don’t know, and singing emotional songs to a God you can’t even see. For some reason, however, churches continue to do it! What if you don’t like singing? What if you have a horrible voice? What if you don’t like the style of music? What if it just makes you feel awkward? Why do it? Can’t we just skip that part? There are few church practises as well known as the collection of the tithes and offerings. People who have never attended a church are well informed that should they ever go, there will be a part of the service where people will be invited to place some of their hard-earned money in a bucket, bag or bowl. Few practises raise as much suspicion and confusion as the weekly church offering. Where does the money go? Aren’t people just being manipulated into giving up their money? How much are you meant to give anyway? Is this a tradition that should just be abolished?
