Before I was born, my parents met and discovered that a little T3 was on the way. My father’s plan was simple. As soon as I could carry my own weight, my mother, my older brother, and I would leave the modern world behind and head into the Bob Marshall Wilderness to homestead, stepping away from the rat race and the web of falsehoods that steals our time and energy in service of hollow pursuits.

Everything changed on a cold night in January, under the full moon. My grandfather called it the Moon of Purification. Before parting ways, he told my father that one day a son would be born, and that on the first Moon of Purification, my father was to bring his child with him at just four months old, honoring a sacred promise. That night, my father carried me into a place deeply loved by my grandfather, lit his pipe, and gave thanks.

That night matters because it marks the moment my father stopped living a dream and began living a vision.

Each time I move forward, it gets a little easier. I’m learning to let go of what no longer serves me and hold even tighter to what truly matters. The past may carry its share of pain, but there’s nothing to do now except keep growing and becoming the best version of myself.

This trip carries special meaning: since my father took his final walk, I haven’t had a place I can truly call home. Now, the road itself has become both teacher and shelter. However I am very much missing friends, and a community the "Speaks" my language

Today is the day—Rolling Turtle and I are officially FULL NOMAD!

After years of dreaming, planning, and slowly pulling the pieces together, it’s finally happening. And of course, the adventure kicked off with a classic plot twist.

On my way to visit an old friend in Spokane, Rolling Turtle decided he didn’t like his clutch anymore. At first, I thought, “Uh oh, this could be bad…” but as luck (or fate) would have it, my friend just happens to be a Subaru wizard. The repair shop would’ve hit me with a $2400 bill, but instead—with two friends, some elbow grease, and under $900—Rolling Turtle is now running better than ever. My gas mileage is up, my steering is smoother, and I couldn’t feel more grateful for the way things aligned.

That’s when it really hit me: even though I’ve been bouncing around for a while, today marks the moment I’ve stepped fully into this nomadic lifestyle. Not just because it’s time—but because I’m on a mission now. I’m not just traveling; I’m searching for a place I can truly call home, a spot on the map filled with people who are genuine, welcoming, and real.

And here’s the exciting part: I am officially open for business.

Choices, Zen, and the Art of Subaru Maintenance

Sometimes the universe has a way of nudging us exactly where we’re supposed to be. I had originally planned to leave a day earlier, stopping to visit another friend before heading on to Spokane, Washington. Looking back, if I’d taken that route, my clutch probably would’ve given out in the middle of nowhere, not exactly the kind of adventure I had in mind.

Instead, running a day late led me straight to Spokane and to reconnect with the first close friend I made after moving to Oregon. Chris and I taught side by side for two years, and he remains one of the few people I can’t separate my teaching memories from.

Chris is more than just an old teaching partner , he’s a caretaker at heart. In Spokane, he’s been spearheading initiatives to tackle the city’s housing crisis, working to ensure that every family has the chance at a fresh start. And on top of all that, he’s a Subaru wizard. His skills (and generosity) saved me a small fortune and gave me the chance to dive deeper into learning the art of maintaining my own rolling home.

Rolling Turtle may look like a 2015 Subaru Crosstrek, but don’t be fooled—it has a rare five-speed manual heart and the spirit of a wandering storyteller. It took me an entire year to pare down life’s clutter so that every hat I wear, every tool I need, could fit neatly into this little rolling shell of adventure.

But this isn’t just about the car—it’s about the road ahead. On the 31st, Rolling Turtle and I will be heading toward Gallatin Gateway, Montana, to visit none other than my longtime mentor and dear friend, the one and only Victor Wooten. Yes, that Victor Wooten\, the best bass player in the world.

Back in February, I had the joy of witnessing him and his brothers weave two straight hours of music so breathtaking it felt like the universe itself was humming along. Four brothers, over fifty years of playing together, each a master of their craft… and when they take the stage, their instruments don’t just play—they become part of their very being. It was the most moving musical experience of my life.

So in this episode, we’ll talk about that magic, about Victor’s journey, and yes… I’ll finally dare to ask him the age-old riddle: “Why can’t you walk across the log?”
