Recent literature records various lines of attack against penal substitutionary atonement. One of the central thrusts of the Scriptures is that the atonement is, first, objectively accomplished through Jesus Christ and subjectively accomplished through redemption. When pastors reject the penal substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ, they undercut a major dimension of the exclusivity of the gospel.

Defending the biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone over against the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church is important. The imputation of Christ’s righteousness on his followers is the only means of salvation. This doctrine helps us to describe the truth and reality of the Christian life. The true gospel is good news.

A pastor is charged to not simply inform people of what God says, but to exult in it. A pastor’s task is to herald a message permeated by the greatness and glory of God through His word.
