We’re talking about shipping this week, friends! Becca and Hannah Davey are cheerful multishippers and this statement takes up a few minutes of our episode until we derail completely to talk about polyamory and its depiction in media and fandom. Hooray for OT3s! Neither of us (as of the recording) has any experience being polyamorous, but we have friends who’re living and loving that poly life, and we support more polyamory depictions in stories! Especially if the story addresses the question: how big a bed do you have to get to fit everyone?

We talk a lot about fanfic on this podcast, because Becca and Hannah Davey are prolific fanfic consumers, but fanfic isn’t the only way that fans  create things based on media. We survived a historical fandom event that coincided with a national political tipping point. Do you remember where you were when the American election results were still being counted and a certain show was nearing its final episode? Recorded around the time all this was unfolding (November 11, 2020), Becca and Hannah Davey witnessed Tumblr melting down on November 5th due to rumors of Vladimir Putin’s resignation, the collective breath the world was holding as we counted the votes for the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, and the homophobic gay love confession on the show Supernatural’s penultimate episode. That’s right, fandom friends, we’re going to take you back to Super Gay Hell.

To be clear, neither Becca nor Hannah Davey watch Supernatural. We spend most of this podcast just reciting our favorite memes that emerged, including a follow up recorded in January 2021 of our favorite meme that emerged a little later due to translation times. This was a big, messy fandom deal, we lived it and laughed a lot. It was bizarre to experience such a tense time politically and such a bewildering time in fandom.

It’s been a long while since Asexuality Awareness Week (the last week of October 2020), but that’s when we recorded this episode and dang it, Becca and Hannah Davey have THOUGHTS about asexuality in media and in fandom! As we say in this podcast’s intro, we’re going to talk about sex this episode, but in a very removed way. We keep it together for the first half of the episode, discussing canon asexual characters in original works as well as ace representation in fics, but we get into some personal opinions (as two bi aces) about sex, virginity, societal shaming, and assumptions that people make about asexuals (and just relationships in general). If that sort of discussion sounds uncomfortable for you, you can bail once the music starts playing 40 minutes in.

Fandom breakups hurt! It can be bittersweet when you just lose interest in a fandom, or it can be because the Thing becomes Rough to enjoy.  Hannah Davey and Becca have gone through some fandom breakups with the same media and we discuss those things and why we drifted away.

DISCLAIMER: We don’t want to convince ANYONE to stop enjoying their thing! Please enjoy a thing if you like it! We are just talking about that sad feeling of no longer being able to enjoy a thing to the degree you used to, for various reasons. Sometimes fandom helps sustain interest, sometimes a thing changes too much, sometimes a piece of media ends and it’s Done and so are you.

Also, we end up taking a biiiiig tangent (because it’s happier to talk about than fandom breakups) into giving D&D campaign advice if you want to play or DM/GM.

It’s time for a guessing game!
