The town of Meyers, California, is nestled along Highway 50 in the Sierra Nevada, a short drive past the breathtaking view of the lake from Echo Summit and before you enter South Lake Tahoe. Although many of the homes in this community are rental properties, hundreds call it home year-round. They’ve become accustomed to both the threat of wildfires and shoveling themselves out of epic snowstorms. This winter, the snowfall in the Central Sierra this winter is nearing snowfall records leaving residents in Meyers and other communities in the high country buried in a bewildering amount of snow. One of the residents of this town is Susie Kocher, a Forestry Advisor for the University of California’s Cooperative Extension in South Lake Tahoe. When she and her family haven’t been shoveling snow at their home? She's been chronicling the incredible snowfall amounts on her Twitter page for the last couple of weeks. Susie joins us now from her home in Meyers to share her experience with us and how these powerful storms have been impacting daily life for her and her community.   

School boards wield a lot of power, but often for voters, they are the lesser-known race on ballots. However, this elected position has been politicized nationwide in recent years, particularly during the pandemic. Which on the one hand means there’s more awareness, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into a deeper collective knowledge of their influence on education. An influence that is also shaped by representation. A CapRadio-Sacramento Observer analysis looked into four districts within Sac County, that include Sac City, Elk Grove, Natomas and San Juan Unified to better understand if school boards reflect their student body. It’s important because Sacramento schools are among the most diverse in the state, and the findings are far from uniform. CapRadio Sacramento Education Reporter Srishti Prabha shares their analysis of the diversity of four Sacramento County school boards which revealed many communities are underrepresented on their respective boards.
