How Social Media Can Disrupt Your Mental Balance – And What You Can Do About It
Life coach Joel Elston has decided to stay away from social media for the rest of the month.
Is this a behavior we would all be well advised to emulate?
Our daily lives are inundated with information from social media and the 24-hour news cycle. But is constant exposure affecting our mental well-being? On a recent episode of LOA Today, Joel shared with host Walt Thiessen how social media has impacted his mental balance at times – and what steps he takes to regain control.
Joel explained that every few months, he finds himself taking a break from social media when world events or personal struggles start to weigh on his mental state. “I don’t deal with anxiety, but when I feel myself a little off balance or thinking about things, social media is one of the first things I do is shut it down,” he said. Walt agreed from personal experience, noting how consuming certain news or entertainment can leave him feeling “heavy” without realizing why.
The two discussed how our brains are constantly being programmed by what we pay attention to. Joel emphasized the importance of being aware of where one’s programming is coming from, and shutting off influences that disrupt balance. “When I find myself on the edge of being programmed, I’ll take a break from social media or delete it entirely,” he said. Walt recognized this proactive approach, saying it’s a good way to “regain balance” by shifting one’s attention elsewhere.
Their conversation highlighted questions about the reliability of historical records and perspectives. Joel questioned official accounts of historical events due to inconsistencies. Walt acknowledged the subjectivity of history based on an individual’s perspective. They agreed that social media and the constant news cycle have impacted how problems are perceived today.
However, Joel and Walt offered hopeful takeaways. Walt said recognizing patterns of social media use and one’s emotional response provides an opportunity to “change the program.” Joel shared a heartwarming story of strangers coming together to help a homeless man, emphasizing people’s capacity for good. Both advised prioritizing supportive relationships, managing assumptions, and trusting one’s emotional guidance to maintain mental balance despite outside influences.
