This week Ali is joined by Dr Anna Redding the co-founder and director of Avenue Therapies. She is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, accredited EMDR therapist and Executive coach.

Anna has worked in the NHS and public sector since 2004. She has trained in multiple different approaches including therapy, coaching and leadership. She has focused her career in helping those with severe mental health difficulties specialising in trauma.

In 2015, Anna along with two colleagues started Avenue Therapies. They now have a community of over 50 therapists providing gold standard evidence-based assessments and therapy to individuals, couples and families.

Dr Anna has a  growing passion for ensuring people get the right help in the right way, she supports organisations and leaders to work in a Trauma-Informed way, through training and consultation.

Today we will be digging deeper into trauma informed ways, trauma in the workplace, burn out and what we can do to improve well-being in the workplace.

It was great to have Ali back behind the podcast mic today. This week we have a really intersting chat with Dr Jason Chan. We talked about attachment styles, the impact of childhood experiences on emotional wellbeing and growth, recovery from major trauma and mind-body connection… and there is a thread of spirituality throughout. Jason is the clinical director and co-founder of Zenith Psychology, a private mental health service provider and a growing network of mental health professionals with a core ethos of making growth, beyond well-being and adjustment, the objectives of any work with individuals and organisations.

Outside his private practice, he has led multiple psychological services for patients with long-term heart and lung conditions and traumatic brain injuries within the NHS. Jason is also a practising neuropsychologist and promotes an integration of knowledge on neurocognitive (brain) and emotional (mind) disorders in the complex journey of rehabilitation from brain injuries.

This week we have an interesting talk about Mens mental health with Dr Esther Cole. Award winning Dr Cole is the Founder & Clinical Director of Lifespan Psychology the diverse practice. Having worked in the NHS for 12 years Dr Cole joined the independent sector in 2017 to focus on supporting people from all walks of life. Since then the practice has gone from strength to strength, having won the Prestige Award for Psychological Therapy Specialists of the Year in 2022. Previously Dr Cole received the May Davidson Early Career Award 2020 from the BPS, for her work on childhood brain injury and different innovations in therapy for children adults and families affected by childhood brain injury.

Along with her practice, Esther is also focusing on research, blog writing and proactive work around Mens mental health. Are we turning a blind eye to the issue of Mens mental health and the high rates of male suicide. We really enjoyed our conversation with Dr Cole and delving into what we can do to support more of our fathers, brothers and sons to seek support when they need it.

What an episode this was. We were delighted to speak with the CEO and founder of PVL mental health consultancy and a sought-after global keynote and TedX speaker, Petra Velzeboer. 

In this episode, Petra talks to us about her life growing up in the infamous Children of God cult, and how when pregnant and in a relationship with someone outside of the cult, Petra escaped to begin a new life in London. Confronted with years of unresolved trauma, she battled mental illness, including addiction and depression. She reached her ultimate rock bottom when she contemplated taking her own life. At this junction, Petra challenged herself to a year of intentional living and began her journey of self-improvement and mental health accountability.

Petras story is one of hope and determination. Now a trained Psychologist, through her consultancy, PVL, Petra and her team work to fulfil a vision of a world where every organization can be the rising tide that lifts and sustains mental health for every employee, their families, and their communities. We talk about what a healthy workplace looks like and finding balance in setting your own boundaries.

Lee is the chairman of his club Silhillians RUFC, an RFU Injured Players Foundation Trustee, he has years of experience as a Project Manager in the building trade and is a father of twins. In 2020 he was awarded the BBC Sports Personality ‘Unsung Hero’ of the Year for the Midlands.

In 2016, aged just 34, Lee sustained a catastrophic spinal cord injury whilst playing rugby for Silhillians. Lee is now tetraplegic, meaning he has the inability to voluntarily move the upper and lower parts of his body. Yet this has not held Lee back. In this episode Lees shares more about what happened on the day he sustained the injury, he talks about his ongoing recovery, the passion he still has for Rugby, and the importance of using talking therapies.

His story is quite incredible – he died 3 times in recovery! He also is now the happiest he has ever been in his life!

This week Ali takes a Seat with Adam Crampsie. Adam is a mental health clinician with experience in the public, private and charity sectors. Currently the CEO of Mental Health Concern the largest not-for-profit provider of IAPT services in the UK, Adam shares his wealth of knowledge in the industry. 

He's been there and done it all with mental health, from starting out as a therapist in the NHS all the way to leading the development of integrated therapies for FTSE 100 companies. This is a great insight into the business of mental health, the challenges faced by the NHS and the attitudes towards therapy in the UK. Incidentally, he is also now Take a Seats' new Non-Exec director.
