Beth Danson was about twenty-five and, besides her deep auburn-brown hair and lovely face, she boasted an equally attractive body. He found himself captivated by the warm thrust of her breasts beneath the silk blouse. The clear milk of her flesh, at the “V” of her throat excited him in a strange way. When he thought of her as his wife, it was frightening. It was as though someone had tossed him a woman and expected him to just fall into the routine of marriage. It wouldn’t be hard to come to love this woman, but it would take awhile. Hell, he didn’t know her. She was a complete stranger who had suddenly told him they were married. There was nothing familiar about her; even the fingers that were softly working over his face were alien. (Summary by Blurb from the Front Flap!)

he left the mothership and headed for terra he smiled at the instrument panel and watched the operation of the big scout ship as it rocketed toward the light ribbon of atmosphere that enveloped the planet it was a joke in a way in a manner of speaking he was the first terran to fly an alien spaceship but he wasn't thinking of that he was thinking of the woman elizabeth danson of everett pennsylvania she was waiting and he could see the warmth of her body sheathed in the web-like gown that seemed spun over her turgid breast and curved hips by an army of artistic spiders it would not be a hard thing to love a woman like that his fingers curled about the controls his feet working the rudder petals of the screaming ship as he headed for the strange darkness of the atlantic ocean the spaceship was operating well and the earth lifted her curved bosom to meet his rush trouble came early the danger lights flickered in his eyes and the fear welled up within him like a flood fifteen hundred miles an hour and the scout ship was out of control the behavior of the craft was erratic as though a giant hand was slapping the silver belly as he plummeted toward the ball of the earth desperately he tried to reduce the speed of the hurtling ship his fingers working the buttons and levers in a frenzy of determination the craft refused to respond she whipped into a cloud bank headed for the sea lifted suddenly and whirled back toward space in an agony of fear he realized that he no longer was the master of the spaceship he was a prisoner in a violent uncontrollable meteor that would finally slam him into infinity against the very earth that was to be his home

in the early hours of morning jane renault of nova scotia fingered the wheel of his 50-foot boat through the gray ground swells of the grand banks almost to the place where he would cast his nets into the water the overcast sky was refusing to emit the sunlight and a light mist hung over the sea like a disjointed ghost when gene heard the whirring roar of the ship it was too late the silver streak whipped over his fishing boat with all the furies of the gods and nearly tore his steadying sail away muttering a string of french curses gene picked up his radio telephone and reported in violent tones the presence of the jet to the coast guard

they found shelter convenient one below the cliff's edge some 200 yards to the east another amongst broken boulders to the southward while farmer johnson crouched behind the wall that gert the road leading past the ale house from the north it was weary work watching more by token that that night nothing appeared save a thirsty fisherman or two and a stray shuffle-footed vagrant all the like next night the same and i for one was growing somewhat cold but farmer johnson bull-like in his obstinacy swore he wouldn't shave his chin till he had caught summit so off we started on the third night to our rendezvous the third time brings luck thought i as i squatted down in the fork of the same old twisted elm and tis something stormy this evening which might suit our eva's taste it would then be about eight of the clock as i may suppose the wind from the seawood the clouds flowering fringed with a moonlit border like broidery on a cloak and that raw cold touch in the air that chills worse than the hardest winter's frost the night grew stormier vapor lifted upward and assumed strange and threatening shape the cloud forms might be the giants rising up out of jottenheim and advancing to attack odin and the aesir the evil wolf fener in the van his bristles silvered by the moon an hour passed and i began to wish i had never undertaken the quest or mentioned the matter to farmer johnson when i heard as if some way off not exactly a nay but a sort of defiant snorting such as a stallion breeze forth when he wishes to be free then the sound as a very stone falling succeeded mingled with a scraping and a trampling noise crane in my neck forward i saw under a broadened fringe of moonlight their own horse with the ruddy bearded river beside him they had evidently crept through some secret passage that issued into the bottom below me i was just upon the point of raising the human cry on him when an action of his took me by surprise holding up his battle axe for such was his weapon he raised it aloft then thrust its handle deep into the soft moss of the hollow next he threw the horse's reins over the head of it and sinking down upon his knees appeared to be pouring forth a prayer to heaven expressed in all danish which i have set down in english as nearly as i can therefore the swiftness of slept near breathed out into my room let him fly like thy ravens blackmoon and hoogie may my axe be as those when he wheeled this millionaire wing thor's mighty weapon the pride of valhalla this grant may o odin grim jig and all father he then drew forth from his breast to small file and having set up a square stone beside him poured forth into the cup or hollow at the top liquid of a dark colour which i imagined must be either blood or wine this done he seemed to fall prayer afresh but in so lower tone that i could not catch the words of his utterance with any distinctness then he leapt to his feet lifted the axe tossed it into the air caught it as it fell and had vaulted upon the stallions back before i had even recovered from my first astonishment tallyho shouts i yondri goes forward mr johnson followed tom and jack and scrambling down my tree i made for my horse the next thing i heard was a pang evidently the discharge of farmer johnson's musket and there at a weird smothered savage note of pain and rage broke out upon the night seizing my horse i mounted now to the cover to cross a gap in the wall dimly i could see a centaur-like figure plunging and snorting upon the short turf by the cliff's edge then three figures running from the north south and east towards it their own horse plunged and reared like one demented the rider sitting the while firm and supple as an indian then seizing on a sudden the bit twixed his teeth offset the stallion at a tearing gallop southwood away i followed hotly the others giving chase and halloween in the background dike after dyke we flew...
