one evening at twilight they were assembled in a group all six of them uncle paul was reading a large book he always reads to rest himself from his labors finding that after work nothing refreshes so much as communion with a book that teaches us the best others have done said and thought he has in his room well arranged on pine shelves books of all kinds their large and small ones with and without pictures bound and unbound and even guilt-edged ones when he shuts himself up in his room it takes something very serious to divert him from his reading and so they say that uncle paul knows any number of stories he investigates he observes for himself when he walks in his garden he is seen now and then to stop before the hive all around which the bees are humming or under the elder bush from which the little flowers fall softly like flakes of snow sometimes he stoops to the ground for a better view of a little crawling insect or a blade of grass just pushing into view what does he see what does he observe who knows they say however that there comes to his beaming face a holy joy as if he had just found himself face to face with some secret of the wonders of god it makes us feel better when we hear stories that he tells us at these moments we feel better and further more we learn a number of things that someday may be very useful to us uncle paul is an excellent god-fearing man obliging to everyone and as good as bread the village has the greatest esteem for him so much that they call him might paul on account of his learning which is at the service of all to help him in his field work for i must tell you that uncle paul knows how to handle a plow as well as a book and cultivates his little estate with success he has jacques the old husband of old ambrosine mother ambrosine has the care of the house jacques looks after the animals and fields they are better than two servants they are two friends in whom uncle paul has every confidence they saw paul born and have been in the house a long long time how often jacques made whistles from the bark of a willow to console little paul when he was unhappy how many times ambrozene to encourage him to go to school without crying has put a hard-boiled new laid egg in his lunch basket so paul has a great veneration for his father's two old servants his house is their house you should see too how jacques and mother amberzine love their master for him if it were necessary they would let themselves be quartered uncle paul has no family he is alone yet he is never happier than with children children who chatter who ask this and that and the other with the adorable ingeniouses of awakening mind he have prevailed upon his brother to let his children spend a part of the year with their uncle there are three emea jules and claire claire is the oldest when the first cherries come she will be 12 years old little claire is industrious obedient gentle a little timid but not in the least vain she knits stockings hence handkerchief studies her lessons without thinking of what dress she shall wear sunday when her uncle or mother ambrazine who is almost a mother to her tells her to do a certain thing she does it at once even with pleasure happy and being able to render some little service it is a very good quality jules is two years younger he has a rather thin little body lively all fire and flame when he is preoccupied about something he does not sleep he has an insatiable appetite for knowledge everything interests and takes possession of him and ant drawing the straw a sparrow chirping on the roof are sufficient to...

hello tale tellers welcome to tell teller club now i've done us a song called silent night which i'm sure you all know and i started it off uh with some straightforward piano and i did that for quite a bit and i thought well is it quite difficult when you're doing things for a large audience that you've never met um so i thought well i'm going to break them in gently to my effects and my synthesizer so it sounds really run-of-the-mill just my normal piano and then it sort of livens up a little bit as you go two thirds of the way through um it's quite pleasant though but i'm definitely keen i think now to do something much more experimental so i think tomorrow i'm gonna go a bit mad and do something wacky and outrageous and the idea of using i mean the interesting thing about synthesizer which of course i use my synthesizer all the time and i work with logic pro all the time but the thing is it doesn't take very long to know all the sounds and you think with all the you know millions of possibilities you think oh it's going to take me you know the next decade to learn them all but there's something very similar about all of them and that's that's quite interesting to me the way that you know the human ear can can recognize that you know two things are the same even though they've got a different name um you can tell where the process that's created them it's very very interesting so um yeah i did this it was quite uh it's pretty it's a bit like lift music to start with but i functioned up a little bit in the middle and then just uh took it out so it's just five minutes of silent night i quite like it um i'm going to use the lively section or the bit that's a bit unusual for an artwork for my next exhibition um but the other bit is you know it's quite boring i suppose but see what you think um so yeah tomorrow i i'm really keen to do something um that i haven't done before so perhaps i'll use the cello and perhaps you know it's time to use some strange recordings and to sample them i've got quite a few um on my ipad actually i downloaded a it did cost me money but it wasn't a lot of money it's like five hours up five five gbp um and that was quite fun so i think i might try and do something with that for us because you know the telltale club is all about um you know sort of pushing the boat out i suppose and and being quite uh um energized and you know crazy crazy ideas how far can we run with a crazy idea and and then utilize it um now also i did make a video for it and vapour punk um finds things and re-vamps them so vapor punk the aesthetic about you know as vapour punk comes from vaporwave and the aesthetic for vaporwave was to take things sounds um and visual clips like vectors and things like that and to sort of make collages of them and make audio collages and that that was the whole sort of aesthetic um and i've just taken that a little bit very not too much further but a little bit further and because i really i think about um how i'm constructing things so that it's not random what i do um but it's basically the same but the idea that there's so much uh imagery around it's just everywhere and it's almost like you know after a bit it can make you feel a bit sick you know when you're scrolling on your phone oh i i don't know about you but it makes me feel kind of sense it desensitizes me but then it over sensitizes me as well so i become desensitized to sort of ideas and the narrative but i become over stimulated by you know all the color and the speed and the angst and the drama of it all um and i i want to make artworks and music with found these things that i find that that maybe make me feel like this not individually but you know on mass and then i want to do something with them and i'm trying to sort of get rid of the narrative it's quite weird it's um because i'm so much more about the music than the visuals what i'm trying to do is make visuals that are sensory...

Welcome to my updates from Royal Clarence. What a dramatic few days we had here!

hi guys welcome to the tail teleclub what a week we have had here in the united kingdom i tell you there is misery all around and i'm fighting against the misery now we've been offline for a few days due to an advent calendar it all started with an advent calendar and um and then the systems crashed and things all went wrong and we had to change our hosting website um people and we had to do this and we had to do that and it was all very upsetting and consequently i've done no recording not because i didn't have anywhere to record because we're not totally dependent on the one website we have lots of um you know people who host our these wonderful wonderful podcasts that i do with you but i was completely and utterly ahead in a computer for days trying to repair the damage that had been done and set the site up again so there was no time for anything all the wonderful practical things that we do so i have had no music for days and i can really feel it and i've been thinking about music therapy a lot and how music therapy is going to get us through these in these coming weeks and months music therapy for me i was a therapist for a while and you you never it never really leaves you you're always um analyzing things and trying to improve things and it struck me actually because of this you know isolation because i've been working so very hard in a computer one-to-one nobody to talk to just you know i haven't been able to sleep or anything and be more to the point because i haven't been playing i felt uh like an alien actually that i'm not connected to the earth now when i teach cello and piano i insist that everyone puts their feet on the ground and this is part of a grounding process that i believe is truly helpful for all of us to connect with the earth and to feel the earth's gravitational pull and and that security of the pull on underfoot the grounding it goes such a long way to making you feel connected that i feel it's a really important thing to have i mean look as a cellist and a pianist if you've just got tiptoes or you're you know fiddling around too much with your feet are you going to make mistakes of course with a piano you need the pedal um so it's a little bit different but not when you first start and and you know when you're doing things like scales and things like that i just think feet on the ground darlings feet on the on the ground um anyway i was thinking about how isolated i've been because it's dark because my website crashed for three days because um i'm you know isolated i live in a very isolated part of um the marina it's it's you know it's there's nobody here in winter it's dead people don't sail in winter um there's no hard-bore activity plus i live in a town that's very very difficult to get out of and i was due to go to london last week and that was cancelled because of the weather and and this is what happens when you're isolated things easily isolate you even more do you see what i mean so the more isolated you are the more isolating life becomes um it's an upward risk very very much so you know if you live in certain places where you're you know you're in a community a a spirited community a loving caring spirited community of people you would find that you would struggle to be isolated do you see what i'm saying so i was thinking about all of these things i was thinking about how i haven't been able to broadcast for a few days and they haven't been doing the christmas podcasts and you know how people can be so um dependent on just listening to somebody chat to them and me you know for me to talk to you and how important it is to to keep that going and that's why i love podcasting actually and the fact that i haven't played my cello and piano for three four five days or something ridiculous um has really struck me but it also brought home to me how you know therapeutic music is and i think we should...

the eyes have it by philip k dick this is a librivox recording all librivox recordings are in the public domain for more information or to volunteer please visit librivox.org recording by phil chanavere the eyes have it by philip k dick published in the magazine science fiction stories 1953. it was quite by accident i discovered this incredible invasion of earth by life forms from another planet as yet i haven't done anything about it i can't think of anything to do i wrote to the government and they sent back a pamphlet on the repair and maintenance of frame houses anyhow the whole thing is known i'm not the first to discover it maybe it's even under control i was sitting in my easy chair idly turning the pages of a paper-backed book someone had left on the bus when i came across the reference that first put me on the trail for a moment i didn't respond it took some time for the full import to sink in after i comprehended it seemed odd i hadn't noticed it right away the reference was clearly to a non-human species of incredible properties not indigenous to earth a species i hasten to point out customarily masquerading as ordinary human beings their disguise however became transparent in the face of the following observations by the author it was at once obvious the author knew everything knew everything and was taking it in his stride the line and i tremble remembering it even now read his eyes slowly roved about the room vague chills assailed me i tried to picture the eyes did they roll like dimes the passage indicated not they seem to move through the air not over the surface rather rapidly apparently no one in the story was surprised that's what tipped me off no sign of amazement that such an outrageous thing later the matter was amplified his eyes moved from person to person there it was in a nutshell the eyes had clearly come apart from the rest of him and were on their own my heart pounded and my breath choked in my windpipe i had stumbled on an accidental mention of a totally unfamiliar race obviously non-terrestrial yet to the characters in the book it was perfectly natural which suggested they belonged to the same species and the author a slow suspicion burned in my mind the author was taking it rather too easily in his stride evidently he felt this was quite a usual thing he made absolutely no attempt to conceal this knowledge the story continued presently his eyes fastened on julia julia being a lady had at least the breeding to feel indignant she is described as blushing and knitting her brows angrily at this eye side with relief they weren't all non-terrestrials the narrative continues slowly calmly his eyes examined every inch of her great scot and here the girl turned and stomped off and the matter ended i lay back in my chair gasping with horror my wife and family regarded me and wonder what's wrong dear my wife asked i couldn't tell her knowledge like this was too much for the ordinary run-of-the-mill person i had to keep it to myself nothing i gasped i leaped up snatched the book and hurried out of the room in the garage i continued reading there was more tremblingly i read the revealing passage he put his arm around julia presently she asked him if he would remove his arm he immediately did so with a smile it is not said what was done with the arm after the fellow had removed it maybe it was left standing upright in the corner maybe it was thrown away i don't care in any case the full meaning was there staring me right in the face here was a race of creatures capable of removing portions of their anatomy at will eyes arms and maybe more without batting an eyelash my knowledge of biology came in handy at this point obviously they were simple beings uni cellular some sort of primitive single cell things being no more developed than starfish starfish can do the same thing you know i read on and came to this incredible revelation...

introduction to pep the story of a brave dog this is a librivox recording all librivox recordings are in the public domain for more information or to volunteer please visit librivox.org recording by david wales pep the story of a brave dog by clarence hawks introduction a friend to man it is almost like a stern irony of fate that man's faithful gentle friend and the dog should have sprung from one of the most thoroughly hated and despised brutes in the animal kingdom the wolf yet this is a scientific fact the wolf with all his meanness and skulking cunning is the progenitor of man's friend the dog they belong to the same family their breeding habits are alike and the wolf is as surely the father of the dog as was a brute man the cave dweller the ancestor of the highly civilized creature we now know in the case of the man it has taken untold ages to bring about the change and so it has in the case of the dog when in the dark ages the brute man crouched over his campfire gazing fearfully into the darkness about him encompassed by superstition and ignorance the gray wolf hung upon the outskirts of his campfire this man creature that ran upon two legs instead of four who had such strange power over fire and water and over the forces of nature and the wild kindred fascinated and drew him with a terrible power try as he would he could not keep away from him often this man creature wounded him with his sharp stick he also poisoned the wolf pack but still they could not be driven away for it was an unwritten law of nature that some day they should be inseparable so the wolf skulked upon the trail of the primitive man until the famine or the cold or some other stern necessity brought them together indians even now in the far north often take the wolf whelps from the den and play with them and they refer to the wolf as a grandfather's dog showing that they understand the gradual evolution of the dog you can better understand this if you visit any of their villages where the dogs even now are little more than partly domesticated wolves wolf fish inhabits and looks such as the husky the famous team dog of the frozen north without whose help the wealth of the klondike and other remote places could hardly have been brought to the outside world the collie which is one of the most faithful and lovable of the dog kind is not so far removed from a wolf and it is very easy for him to slip back to his wolf ancestry there are many instances on record where collies have gone back to the wild and mated and run with the gray pack put a caulipop into a wolf den with a litter of wolf whelps and the old wolf will suckle him as her own he will be brought up as a young wolf will learn to hunt in the pack and to stalk his game like a veritable wolf of course he will not be as fierce as his wolf brother and he will still retain certain dog characteristics but he will pass for a wolf in most particulars while in two or three generations he will be a veritable wolf when we consider all the varieties of dogs ranging from the great dane of nearly 200 pounds weight to the smallest toy dog coming from japan this statement that all dogs are descended from wolves seems almost incredible but all this change has been wrought by man himself breeding and selection for certain qualities have been the method by means of which he has attained such varied results climate and the use to which the dog has been put has also played its part nature always adapts her creatures to their surroundings and the dog is no exception to this rule he has been molded like all of nature's other creatures where he needed long hair to shield him from the cold he has been given a long thick coat and where he could not bear a coat because of the heat it has been left off certain types of dogs there are that have become famous all over the world some for their beauty and others for their usefulness but usually for both qualities every child is familiar with the saint bernard dogs and their...
