hello world outside welcome to royal clarence um some chat about our broadcasting network now if you can hear a funny noise in the background i think he's stopped it's my cat snoring and he does like to be very close to me i think it's because the equipment is warm so he hangs about um anyway i was due to go to my club uh the royal society of arts of which i'm a fellow i was due to go today up there in london town and um have some lunch and what have you and then i was due to go to the groucho which is a wonderful bar in uh well more like an arts club in soho for thespians and other arty farty people and i was so looking forward to it i was hooking up with some friends and that we have a storm barra and it's a case of battening down the hatches everybody and don't go out i mean i can hear him now can you hear that it's hilarious blessed what a cutie um stormborough has come and descended upon us and apparently yes flooding and they've stopped ferries and all sorts of things so i'm incarcerated i it's impossible to if you if you can't get the ferry you're pretty much um in in your own lockdown really because you could get a bus to the next town um but as i say that appears to be flooded and also um it's it's just drama one drama after another really so i've cancelled everything because one's safety is paramount and i'm not as young as i was and the prospect of wet hair wet shoes windswept styling is no longer attractive

so here i am doing a broadcast now broadcasting at royal clouds broadcasting and media is growing from strength to strength we have a google thing going on a business thing so you can look it up um i'm going to spend a bit more effort on that today seeing as i've got an extra day which i hadn't planned for um we're also um branching out into record production we've got uh five releases out now so we're going to start a record label i think that's the best way to describe it um and it's going to be a little bit different to streaming as as you would have on uh amazon and what i'm going to do is i'm going to stream people's music for free and um they can send me their music and they can have a little bit in the middle where they describe it or or say what it's about or whatever um and it's just great advertising and then they can i'll supply the links where that people can buy it by that track you see and it's just a a nicer way i think of doing things because peop musicians aren't just aren't getting the money for their music and it's not fair it's just not fair so i'm going to launch that today at the broadcasting broadcasting house it's a broadcasting house okay broadcasting penthouse at the marina there we go um in other news we've got a wonderful advent calendar which i um i'll also pop the link actually in this description and i'm uploading it's for children really i'm uploading tracks every day and i'm producing a lot of music at the moment i'm going to leave you some music actually um the adagio concerto in d minor my version and the prelude c in c for cello and piano which was my own composition um our xmas song or christmas song which is by vapor punk and the robot orchestra with children in mind and cowboy which is one of my previous tracks which is a mixture of live and um pre-recorded backing it was quite fun to do that actually um so a bit of a mixed bag just to keep you a bit contented to this lunch time actually um i think that's about it i'm going to look out the window and just be grateful that i'm not out in it and if i was you darlings this this storm is hitting the uk and all of the uk um and if you're in the uk i would not bother going out i don't know if delivery are delivering i can't help you there um but do some other things pop the heating on if you can waiting has gone up terribly so i realized that you know um some people are finding it difficult to to...

section two of how to sing this librivox recording is in the public domain recording by ruth golding how to sing by lily layman translated by richard aldrich section two of the breath the breath becomes voiced through the operation of the will and the instrumentality of the vocal organs to regulate the breath to prepare a passage of the proper form through which it shall flow circulate develop itself and reach the necessary resonating chambers must be our chief task concerning the breath and much more besides there is so much that is excellent in oscar gutmann's gumnastic dimmer that i can do no better than to refer to it and recommend it strongly to the attention of all earnest students how do i breathe very short of breath by nature my mother had to keep me as a little child almost sitting upright in bed after i had outgrown that and as a big girl could run around and play well enough i still had much trouble with shortness of breath in the beginning of my singing lessons for years i practiced breathing exercises every day without singing and still do so with a special pleasure now that everything that relates to the breath and the voice has become clear to me soon i had got so far that i could hold a swelling and diminishing tone from 15 to 18 seconds i had learned this to draw in the abdomen and diaphragm raise the chest and hold the breath in it by aid of the ribs in letting out the breath gradually to relax the abdomen to do everything thoroughly i doubtless exaggerated it all but since for 25 years i have breathed in this way almost exclusively with the utmost care i have naturally attained great dexterity in it and my abdominal and chest muscles and my diaphragm have been strengthened to a remarkable degree yet i was not satisfied a horn player in berlin with the power of holding a very long breath once told me an answer to a question that he drew in his abdomen and diaphragm very strongly but immediately relaxed his abdomen again as soon as he began to play i tried the same thing with the best results quite different and very naive was the answer i once got from three german orchestral horn players in america they looked at me an entire bewilderment and appeared not to understand in the least my questions as to how they breathed two of them declared that the best way was not to think about it at all but when i asked if their teachers had never told them how they should breathe the third answered after some reflection oh yes and pointed in a general way to his stomach the first two were right insofar as too violent inhalation of breath is really undesirable because thereby too much air is drawn in but such ignorance of the subject is disheartening and speaks ill for the conservatories in which the players were trained whose performances naturally are likely to give art a black eye undoubtedly i took in too much air in breathing cramped various muscles thereby depriving my breathing organs and muscles of their elasticity i often had with all care and preparation for inhalation too little breath and sometimes when not giving special thought to it more than enough i felt too after excessive inhalation as if i must emit a certain amount of air before i began to sing finally i abandoned all superfluous drawing in of the abdomen and diaphragm inhaled but little and began to pay special attention to emitting the smallest possible amount of breath which i found very serviceable how do i breathe now the diaphragm i draw in my abdomen just a little only immediately to relax it i never raise the chest but i distend the upper ribs and support them with the lower ones like pillars under them in this manner i prepare the form for my singing the supply chamber for the breath exactly as i had learned it from my mother which however i had exaggerated at the...

section 1 of the story of hms pinafore this is a librivox recording all librivox recordings are in the public domain for more information or to volunteer please visit librivox.org recording by noel badrian the story of hms pinafore by w s gilbert forward and chapter one to my young readers i have been asked to explain to you how it comes to pass that this the story of a well-known play is now placed before you in the form of a tale in the first place many very young ladies and gentlemen are never taken to the theater at all it is supposed by certain careful papas and mamas that very young ladies and gentlemen should go to bed at an early hour and that it is very bad for them to sit up as late as half past 11 or 12 o'clock at night of course this difficulty could be overcome by taking them to morning performances which are so called because they invariably take place in the afternoon but there are drawbacks even to morning performances unless you are seated in the front row of the stalls where the band is sure to be too loud or in the front row of the dress circle which is a long way off the enjoyment of very young ladies and gentlemen is pretty nearly sure to be interfered with by the gigantic cartwheel hats decorated with huge bunches of wobbling feathers that ill-bred and selfish ladies clap upon their heads nowadays whenever they go to a theater in the daytime a third reason and perhaps the best of them all is that very young ladies and gentlemen find it rather difficult to follow the story of a play much of which is told in songs set to beautiful music and all of which is written in language which is better suited to their papas and mamas than to themselves a fourth reason but this is not such a good one as the other three is that the opera upon which this book is founded is unhappily not played in every town every night of the year it should be of course but it is not and it may very well happen that some poor people have to go so long as two or three years without having any opportunity of improving their minds by seeing it performed when we get a national theater at which all the best plays will be produced at the expense of the public who will also enjoy the privilege of paying to see the plays after they have defrayed the cost of producing them her majesty ship pinafore will no doubt be played once or twice every fortnight forever but as some years must elapse before this happy state of things can come to pass and as those who are very young ladies and gentlemen now maybe very middle-aged ladies and gentlemen then it was thought that it would be a kind and considerate action to supply them at once with the story of the play so as not to subject them to the tantalizing annoyance of having to wait possibly many years before they have an opportunity of learning what it is all about as i would not for the world deceive my young readers i think it right to state that this story is entirely imaginary it might very well have happened but in point of fact it never did william s gilbert chapter one great britain is at present the most powerful maritime country in the world she possesses a magnificent fleet superb officers and splendid seamen and one and all are actuated by an intense desire to maintain their country's reputation in its highest glory one of the finest and most perfectly manned ships in that magnificent fleet was her majesty ship pinafore and i called the ship her majesties because she belonged to good queen victoria's time when men of war were beautiful...

hi everybody welcome to my cello class i am going to teach you to play the cello now it occurs to me that there are lots and lots of people in the world who love to play cello but they don't know where to start we start at the beginning darlings it's that simple so the first thing you need is a cello a higher one they're very very reasonable if you buy one from china you are going to have a lot of problems from the onset you need your cello to be set up this um setting up needs to be done by professional cello repair hire business do not take the cello that you've bought on ebay to a guitar shop they will not they will break it or they will make it worse the millimeters that are needed for a fine um setting up of a cello are of absolute importance all string instruments require the these um millimeters to set them up correctly and uh luthier who works with guitars doesn't know them and you it's not the sort of thing you can just look up on the internet you need to take your cello to a specialist it's much easier just to hire one from said specialists in the first place um you know you don't know if you're going to enjoy it they're really reasonable you can hire a set up already set up student cello um if you go to some schools do them as well but what what do you the thing is darling if you start with an instrument that is faulty you're not i'm i won't be able to progress with you and i'm not there to tell you how rubbish it is if it is so working on teaching via a podcast requires a different set of uh rules and you you need to um stick to them otherwise we won't get anywhere so the first thing to have is your cello and it's been set up and if you're a parent and you're starting this series with a child you're going to cause really a lot of emotional damage if the cello has a problem because the child will not be able to get decent sounds out of the cello if it's not set up correctly okay so that's the first thing we've got that out the way now the next thing and i i'm being a stickler here the next thing is that you need to be tuned up always always tuned up okay and i always work with a drone and you're going to be hearing the drones in a minute that we will be working with for the next six months while i teach you to play so

there we go i've got my um it's not a drone i use something called garageband and um i find the best uh the least distracting uh backdrop in the key that i need uh the base the cello and the viola when you start adding um the violins it can be a little confusing but we'll be doing that but not not at the moment so i'm assuming that you're already tuned up there is a tuning lesson at tail telekids and i'll pop that in the link um it's difficult to tune a cello you need to probably go and watch a video i'm hoping that's not too loud in the background i don't think it is you need to watch a video because it but or listen to my podcast so that that's already up there i'll sort that out so now you've got this cello and you you need to look at a video to see how to hold it um the only problems i can see if you're if you're small small of stature and frame um don't be tempted to have a smaller cello you won't get the sound that you need out of it uh you don't get good sounds out of uh half size cellos in in the same way that i mean it's fine for a child a little child but if you're an adult and even if you're small try and get a full-sized cello you'll it makes a world of difference in your um the production of your sound because the the dimensions of it are quite perfect for the orchestra and for solo work if you've got a big bazoom it can be slightly awkward you're going to have to find a way of um you know sitting properly i personally have mine under um my boobs because if i lean them on my if i lean it on on top of them my chest...
