so it's quite meaty isn't it it's quite percussive actually i'll try and put that in the title it's really difficult to describe any of these sound effects and so that's it from the loop factory for now more on their way

hi tail tellers welcome welcome welcome now then this is a recording of a childlike train so this is one that i've used in um when i'm doing nursery rhymes and stuff like that but it's quite useful you can do some stuff with it it's really really good for making a backdrop to any child's entertainment but you may have other reasons to use it and don't forget if you start pitch shifting um you know you can use garageband really good for that and you can also use logic pro it's quite easy to pitch shift there's a dirty way to pitch shift as well if you upload your track to youtube um and slow it down you'll find that that also pitch shifts so that was my cat by the way so you've got a meow in there if you need it now do remember that all of these are completely free and you can do what you want with them and we've got a great school of music here but i'm trying to modernize things a little bit as we move away from uh traditional methods of teaching with with cello and piano of course i'm a cellist and pianist um but move into this sort of a digital arena and you really don't need a lot of money if you use samples um you know you don't need fancy software actually you can really get away with um sort of finding and using the free stuff remember garish band is free it's completely free so that's really useful to know so here we go here's my train childish train

    Cloud Studies
    by Arthur William Clayden
preface to cloud studies this is a librivox recording all librivox recordings are in the public domain for more information or to volunteer please visit librivox.org recording by jennifer dahlman cloud studies by arthur w clayton preface to the meteorologists i hope the following pages may prove not only of some interest but of practical value as a small step toward that greater exactness of language which is essential before we can attempt to explain all the details of cloud structure or even interchange our ideas and observations with adequate precision the varieties depicted and described have been selected for many hundreds as those which seem to me to show differences of form as to imply distinct differences in the conditions to which they are due i have not attempted to deal with the physical causes of condensation except in a general way being unwilling to introduce diagrams of isothermals and adiobatics and such purely scientific methods into a work also intended for a wider public for those who wish to pursue this part of the subject i have appended a list from the papers from the quarterly journal of the royal meteorological society and other sources which may serve as references i also hope that some more voters of the science may be induced to realize that meteorology does not consist solely of the tabulation of long columns of records but includes subjects for investigation as much more beautiful as they are more difficult to the artist i trust they may also be of some use by calling attention to the variety and exquisite beauty of the sky nothing is more extraordinary in art than the general negligence of cloudforms many of them are quite as worthy of careful drawing as the leaves of a tree the flowers of a field the ripples on a stream or the texture of a carpet or a marble pavement yet it is a common role to find pictures which are otherwise marvelous examples of skill and care disfigured by improbable skies with vague shapeless clouds as untrue to nature as it would be possible to make them grace of outline delicacy of detail and texture richness of contrast beauty of form and light and color are all present in the skies and combine to make the whole well worthy of the best the art can give the illustrations i offer are not selected for pictorial effect they are chosen from a purely scientific point of view but they are enough to indicate what would be done if the facts of nature were treated with high artistic skill in addition to the meteorologist and the artist there is a much larger number who follow neither profession but who love nature in all her moods and to them i also hope these pages may be of interest indeed if only a few of them should be stimulated to take up a branch of nature study which has given me many an hour of quiet enjoyment the labor of bringing these notes together will not have been in vain arthur w clayton st john's exeter end of preface

chapter 1 of cloud studies by arthur w clayton this librivox recording is in the public domain recording by jennifer dahlman chapter one introduction all who have the faculties proper to man must have been to some extent students of cloud form go where we will do what we will we cannot easily escape from the sky or avoid noticing some of its features and coupling them with the varying conditions of weather we all sometimes want to know if it's likely to rain or whether some other change is probable an experience soon shows us that the clouds give the simplest and most obvious indication of what we may expect it is almost impossible to avoid noticing that certain types of cloud or the simultaneous appearance of certain types is the usual accompaniment of definite kinds of weather or of particular changes thus it is that most people acquire some small measure of weather wisdom before their school days are over generation after generation through all human history the same causes must have...

  • Omoo, ch5-6 A Narrative of Adventures in the South Seas by Herman Melville Adventure Fiction Novel (ST)
A great traditional seafaring island adventure-based partly on memoirs,
We live stream all our novels 24/7 on the Tale Teller Talking Books Podcast as well as providing public access to our library.

chapters 5 and 6 of omu this librivox recording is in the public domain omu a narrative of adventures in the south seas by hermann melville chapter 5. what happened at heidi who less than 48 hours after leaving nuku hiva the blue looming island of saint christina greeted us from afar drawing near the shore the grim black spars and waspish hall of a small man of warcraft crept into view the masts and yards lying distinctly against the sky she was writing to her anchor in the bay and proved to be a french corvette this pleased our captain exceedingly and coming on deck he examined her from the mizen rigging with his glass his original intention was not to let go in anchor but counting upon the assistance of the corvette in case of any difficulty he now changed his mind and anchored alongside of her as soon as a boat could be lowered he then went off to pay his respects to the commander and moreover as we supposed to concert measures for the apprehension of the runaways returning in the course of 20 minutes he brought along with him two officers in undress and whiskers and three or four drunken obstetrious old chiefs one with his legs thrust into the armholes of a scarlet vest another with a pair of spurs on his heels and a third in a cocked hat and feather in addition to these articles they merely wore the ordinary costume of their race a slip of native cloth about the loins in decorus as their behavior was these worthies turned out to be a deputation from the reverend the clergy of the island and the subject of their visit was to put our ship under a rigorous taboo to prevent the disorderly scenes and facilities for desertion which would ensue were the natives men and women allowed to come off to us freely there was little ceremony about the matter the chiefs went aside for a moment laid their shaven old crowns together and went over a little mummery whereupon their leader tore a lung strip from his girdle of white tapa and handed it to one of the french officers who after explaining what was to be done gave it to german the maid at once went out to the end of the flying jib boom and fastened there the mystic symbol of the ban this put to flight a party of girls who had been observed swimming towards us tossing their arms about and splashing the water like porpoises with loud cries of taboo taboo they turned about and made for the shore the night of our arrival the mate and the maori were to stand watch and watch relieving each other every four hours the crew as is sometimes customary when lying at an anchor being allowed to remain all night below a distrust of the men however was in the present instance the principal reason for this proceeding indeed it was all but certain that some kind of attempt would be made at desertion and therefore when german's first watch came on at eight bells midnight by which time all was quiet he mounted to the deck with a flask of spirits in one hand and the other in readiness to assail the first countenance that showed itself above the foxel scuttle thus prepared he doubtless meant to stay awake but for all that before long he fell asleep and slept with such hearty good will too that the men who left us that night might have been waked up by his snoring certain it was the mate snored most strangely and no wonder with that crooked bugle of his when he came to himself it was just dawn but quite light enough to show two boats gone from the side in an instant he knew what had happened dragging the maori out of an old sail where he was napping he ordered him to clear away another boat and then darted into the cabin to tell the captain the news springing on deck again he dived down into the foxel for a couple of oarsmen but hardly got there before there was a cry and a loud splash heard...

    Det är sa undenigar ställen
by Adelaide VON SKILONDZ - Sopran

hi guys now then i've found another 78 and i'm going to try and pronounce it this is in uh swedish i think should check ahead i'm pretty sure it is i'm sure i just read that yes it's swedish and so it's

    stalin by adele von schklantz

oh there's a lot of a lot of difficult words here who's a soprano who was a soprano now this is a 1924 broadcast uh it's in the public domain so you can sample it should you require it for that but i really like it and i was thinking why do i like it so much and i like it because i like listening to foreign languages for some reason when i can't understand the words i find sometimes words are a bit distracting do you know what you mean i mean i like the way they sound but i don't necessarily like the intonation not the intonation that's not what i mean the um the meaning you know the meaning the emotion no i like the emotion it's the meaning so somebody could sound a certain way but if actually what they're saying is something i don't want to hear or i don't agree with um the words become sort of irrelevant lost on me as it were so i think that's why i like to listen to foreign languages uh that i don't understand i particularly love french but i really like this one as well and i i don't have any swedish friends i don't uh i've never been to sweden but it sort of resonates somehow and i've no idea what she's singing about either which i don't think that matters at all but when she's singing i get this sort of imaginary feeling of uh me tap dancing or doing some sort of ballet stuff like tippy toes ballet um in my ideal human self do you do you find you have an ideal age so it's your sort of a human inhabitated form that uh mine isn't aging with me so my sort of human representation of myself in my mind is about 35 i think um i'm certainly too old to do ballet now um as i approach my uh last trimester sort of i don't know if i can say that um you know i'll be 60 soon and one can't be popping out although i'm starting ballet i am starting barry but i my ideal ballet self is much better at ballet than the actual um clumsy oath body that i possess but it gives me that sort of feeling of ballet class because i used to take my kids to body class and tap class and it gives me that sort of sense of a wooden floor and the sort of smell of the ballet um school and the mirrors and i don't know why it evokes that i mean somebody do tell me what it's about it's probably about you know a war or something completely different who knows um i mean do you know what i could do i will get i could get the transcript and then put the transcript because i i get the transcript you see from my vote my recordings then i can put the transcript into google and then i'll be able to pop back and in the comments and tell you what she's going on about fun anyway 1924 it's in the public domain um soprano and that's pretty much the only information i have so i can't really tell you anything else about it i'm afraid other than i i really like it so let's play it and i'll see what else i can find tonight i'm having a real night of 78 i think it's fun

    is

    i

    oh

    oh

    foreign

whoa what do you think what this ended very suddenly i really liked that bit where she went like that was quite amusing i wonder if she was no she wasn't taking the mickey will she was that serious i suppose it was serious who knows how exciting i'm going to definitely do the transcript thing and and find out what she was saying um it's me really cheered me up that recording i literally i'm laughing um because of it and just thrilled by it absolutely thrilled this is the wonder of music and wonder of these 78s i think they're going to be enthralling i'm going to find you lots and lots more okay back soon

chapters three and four of omu this librivox recording is in the public domain omu a narrative of adventures in the south seas by hermann melville chapter three further account of the julia owing to the absence of anything like regular discipline the vessel was in a state of the greatest uproar the captain having for some time past been more or less confined to the cabin from sickness was seldom seen the mate however was as hearty as a young lion and ran about the decks making himself heard at all hours bembo the new zealand harpinear held little intercourse with anybody but the mate who could talk to him freely in his own lingo part of his time he spent out on the bowsprit fishing for albacores with a bone hook and occasionally he waked all hands up of a dark knight dancing some cannibal fandango all by himself on the folk soul but upon the whole he was remarkably quiet though something in his eye showed he was far from being harmless dr long ghost having sent in a written resignation as the ship's doctor gave himself out as a passenger for sydney and took the world quite easy as for the crew those who were sick seemed marvelously contented for men in their condition and the rest not displeased with the general license gave themselves little thought of the marrow the julia's provisions were very poor when opened the barrels of pork looked as if preserved in iron rust and diffused an odor like a stale ragu the beef was worse yet a mahogany colored fibrous substance so tough and tasteless that i almost believed the cook's story of a horse's hoof with the shoe on having been fished up out of the pickle of one of the casks nor was the biscuit much better nearly all of it was broken into hard little gun flints honeycombed through and through as if the worms usually infesting this article in long tropical voyages had in boring after nutriment come out at the antipodes without finding anything of what sailors call small stores we had but little t however we had in abundance though i dare say the hung merchants never had the shipping of it besides this every other day we had what english seamen call shot soup great round peas polishing themselves like pebbles by rolling about in tepid water it was afterwards told me that all our provisions had been purchased by the owners at an auction sale of condemned navy stores in sydney but not withstanding the wateriness of the first course of soup and the saline flavor of the beef and pork a sailor might have made a satisfactory meal aboard of the julia had there been any side dishes a potato or two a yam or a plantain but there was nothing of the kind still there was something else which in the estimation of the men made up for all the deficiencies and that was the regular allowance of peace go it may seem strange that in such a state of affairs the captain should be willing to keep the sea with his ship but the truth was that by lying in harbor he ran the risk of losing the remainder of his men by desertion and as it was he still feared that in some outlandish bay or other he might one day find his anchor down and no crew to weigh it with judicious officers the most unruly sea men can at sea be kept in some sort of subjection but once get them within a cable's length of the land and it is hard restraining them it is for this reason that many south sea whale men do not come to an anchor for 18 or 20 months at a stretch when fresh provisions are needed they run for the nearest land heave to eight or ten miles off and send a boat ashore to trade the crews manning vessels like these are for the most part villains of all nations and dies picked up in the lawless ports of the spanish maine and among the savages of the islands like galley slaves they are only to be governed by scourges and chains their officers go among them with dirk and pistol concealed but ready at a grasp...

  • Music With Sarnia and a Robin Redbreast Old Time Vinyl 78s Find And Some Music Chat (ST)
    Robin Redbreast
    by Hary Macdonough, Joseph Belmont

hi guys welcome to a little weekend bird song now i figured that i should probably share with you all sorts of um the techniques that i use i'm a musician i i suspect you already know that but i work a lot with digital music and although i'm a cellist and a pianist um i acoustic wise i also make a lot of digital music so i sample lots of things and i put things through my synth for example and i get midi sounds and and i you know i create um well quite a lot of unusual sort of experimental music and the internet is a great place the archive internet you know the the internet that is public domain you can't go around taking every you know copying people's work and you can't take stuff off tv even actually you know start to do that because everything that we see and hear and engage with today is owned by somebody unless because somebody's made it easy somebody's put effort into it unless it's in the public domain and you can see the public domain label it's two c's in a little circle or a c with a cross through it or it sometimes says public domain next to it so this website you know this whole podcast works a lot with public domain stuff and i really like old stuff if it's before twin i think it's 1926 or 1962 i can't remember but you're allowed to use it so it's not under copyright music wise um sometimes a bit later if the artist has been dead 50 years and um i think it's if it if it was a recording and it's 50 years old but you'll have to check that out i mean i don't go near anything that i could get slapped with a copyright order on it's just not worth a hassle darlings frankly anyway i have got a lot of source material to share with you which is public domain but also it's just such curious and such fun stuff so i found loads of stuff today that i'm going to um pop up on the on the show because i just think it it's inspirational because what you can do is you can listen you can think oh i really like that i could rewrite it and you are allowed to do that anything that's in the public domain belongs to all of us and you can change it copy it um bend it stretch it you know all of these things and quite often you can hear a song and you think oh do you know what i quite like that but it would be better in a different key for example or i'd quite like to sing that at my mum's wedding you know would that work maybe not maybe your daughter's wedding oh i don't know your mum could be getting married again couldn't she anyway i'm really waffling on aren't i so let's let's have a listen anyway and i'll i'll let you make your own judgment and you can use this for not my speaking you can't use that but you can use this recording because it's in the public domain so if you go to the internet archive and look up robin redbreast by harry mcdowell mcdonald sorry and joseph belmont and you you should be able to find it there's probably a few places that have got it up by now um not just the internet archive um and then you can download the file directly from there you see it's just much easier than uh recording something on a hand mic um so let's let's just play it and see shall we remember it's a bit shrill

a little rubbing red rest lived within

    and his pretty

    i'd like to get a

    from behind

seem to sing these words through me

    from

    little love

    oh

    little

    fun

it was cool wasn't it my cat um i think was wondering what was going on i think that's really good and are just really really interesting now that's survived from 1907. can you believe that that recording is still around of course it's here because of digital music because we've been able to preserve things now so what started off as a you know analog recording or a 78 um i'm pretty sure that was a 78 um yeah label berliner from happy land so you know that the chances of a vinyl surviving actually...
