hi guys welcome to a little weekend bird song now i figured that i should probably share with you all sorts of um the techniques that i use i'm a musician i i suspect you already know that but i work a lot with digital music and although i'm a cellist and a pianist um i acoustic wise i also make a lot of digital music so i sample lots of things and i put things through my synth for example and i get midi sounds and and i you know i create um well quite a lot of unusual sort of experimental music and the internet is a great place the archive internet you know the the internet that is public domain you can't go around taking every you know copying people's work and you can't take stuff off tv even actually you're not starting to do that because everything that we see and hear and engage with today is owned by somebody unless because somebody's made it easy somebody's put effort into it unless it's in the public domain and you can see the public domain label it's two c's in a little circle or a c with a cross through it or it sometimes says public domain next to it so this website you know this whole podcast works a lot with public domain stuff and i really like old stuff if it's before twin i think it's 1926 or 1962 i can't remember but you're allowed to use it so it's not under copyright music wise and sometimes a bit later if the artist has been dead 50 years and um i think it's if it if it was a recording and it's 50 years old but you'll have to check that out i mean i don't go near anything that i could get slapped with a copyright order on it's just not worth a hassle darlings frankly anyway i have got a lot of source material to share with you which is public domain but also it's just such curious and such fun stuff so i found loads of stuff today that i'm going to um pop up on the on the show because i just think it it's inspirational because what you can do is you can listen you can think oh i really like that i could rewrite it and you are allowed to do that anything that's in the public domain belongs to all of us and you can change it copy it um bend it stretch it you know all of these things and quite often you can hear a song and you think oh do you know what i quite like that but it would be better in a different key for example or i'd quite like to sing that at my mum's wedding you know oh would that work maybe not maybe your daughter's wedding oh i don't know your mum could be getting married again couldn't she anyway i'm really waffling on aren't i so let's let's have a listen anyway and i'll i'll let you make your own judgment and you can use this for not my speaking you can't use that but you can use this recording because it's in the public domain so if you go to the internet archive and look up robin redbreast by harry mcdowell mcdonald sorry and joseph belmont um you you should be able to find it there's probably a few places that have got it up by now and not just the internet archive um and then you can download the file directly from there you see it's just much easier than uh recording something on a hand mic um so let's let's just play it and see shall we remember it's a bit shrill

chapters one and two of omu this librivox recording is in the public domain omu a narrative of adventures in the south seas by hermann melville chapter one my reception aboard it was the middle of a bright tropical afternoon that we made good our escape from the bay the vessel we sought lay with her main top sail a back about a league from the land and was the only object that broke the broad expanse of the ocean in approaching she turned out to be a small slaughteringly looking craft her hull and spars a dingy black rigging all slack and bleached nearly white and everything denoting an ill state of affairs aboard the four boats hanging from her sides proclaimed her a whaler leaning carelessly over the bulwarks were the sailors wild haggard looking fellows in scotch caps and faded blue frocks some of them with cheeks of a modeled bronze to which sickness soon changes the rich berry brown of a semen's complexion in the tropics on the quarter deck was one whom i took for the chief mate he wore a broad-brimmed panama hat and his spyglass was leveled as we advanced when we came alongside a low cry ran for and after the deck and everybody gazed at us with inquiring eyes and well they might to say nothing of the savage boat's crew panting with excitement all gesture and vociferation my own appearance was calculated to excite curiosity a rope of the native cloth was thrown over my shoulders my hair and beard were uncut and i betrayed other evidences of my recent adventure immediately on gaining the deck they beset me on all sides with questions the half of which i could not answer so incessantly were they put as an instance of the curious coincidences which often befall the sailor i must hear mention that two countenances before me were familiar one was that of an old man of wars man whose acquaintance i had made in rio de janeiro at which place touched the ship in which i sailed from home the other was a young man whom four years previous i had frequently met in a sailor boarding house in liverpool i remembered parting with him at prince's doc gates in the midst of a swarm of police officers track men stevedores beggars and the like and here we were again years had rolled by many a league of ocean had been traversed and we were thrown together under circumstances which almost made me doubt my own existence but a few moments passed er i was sent for into the cabin by the captain he was quite a young man pale and slender more like a sickly counting house clerk than a bluff sea captain fitting me be seated he ordered the steward to hand me a glass of pisco in the state i was this stimulus almost made me delirious so that of all i then went on to relate concerning my residence on the island i can scarcely remember a word after this i was asked whether i desired to ship of course i said yes that is if he would allow me to enter for one cruise engaging to discharge me if i so desired at the next port in this way men are frequently shipped on board whale men in the south seas my stipulation was acceded to and the ship's articles handed me to sign the mate was now called below and charged to make a well man of me not let it be born in mind that the captain felt any great compassion for me he only desired to have the benefit of my services as soon as possible helping me on deck the mate stretched me out on the windlass and commenced examining my limb and then doctoring it after a fashion with something from the medicine chest rolled it up in a piece of an old sail making so big a bundle that with my feet resting on the windlass i might have been taken for a sailor with the gout while this was going on someone removing my tapa cloak slipped on a blue frock in its place and another actuated by the same desire to make a civilized mortal of me flourished about my head a great...

preface and introduction of omu this is a librivox recording all librivox recordings are in the public domain for more information or to volunteer please visit librivox.org omu a narrative of adventures in the south seas by hermann melville preface nowhere perhaps are the proverbial characteristics of sailors shown under wilder aspects than in the south seas for the most part the vessels navigating those remote waters are engaged in the sperm whale fishery a business which is not only peculiarly fitted to attract the most reckless sea men of all nations but in various ways is calculated to foster in them a spirit of the utmost license these voyages also are unusually long and perilous the only harbors accessible are among the barbarous or semi-civilized islands of polynesia or along the lawless western coast of south america hence scenes the most novel and not directly connected with the business of whaling frequently occur among the crews of ships in the pacific without pretending to give any account of the whale fishery for the scope of the narrative does not embrace the subject it is partly the object of this work to convey some idea of the kind of life to which illusion is made by means of a circumstantial history of adventures befalling the author another object proposed is to give a familiar account of the present condition of the converted polynesians as affected by their promiscuous intercourse with foreigners and the teachings of the missionaries combined as a roving sailor the author spent about three months in various parts of the islands of tahiti and imeo and under circumstances most favorable for correct observations on the social condition of the natives in every statement connected with missionary operations a strict adherence to facts has of course been scrupulously observed and in some instances it has even been deemed advisable to quote previous voyagers in corroboration of what is offered as the fruit of the author's own observations nothing but an earnest desire for truth and good has led him to touch upon this subject at all and if he refrains from offering hints as to the best mode of remedying the evils which are pointed out it is only because he thinks that after being made acquainted with the facts others are more qualified to do so should a little jocostness be shown upon some curious traits of the tahitians it proceeds from no intention to ridicule things are merely described as from their entire novelty they first struck an unbiased observer the present narrative necessarily begins where type he concludes but has no further connection with the latter work all therefore are necessary for the reader to understand who has not read taipei is given in a brief introduction no journal was kept by the author during his wanderings in the south seas so that in preparing the ensuing chapters for the press precision with respect to dates would have been impossible and every occurrence has been put down from simple recollection the frequency however with which these incidents have been verbally related has tended to stamp them upon the memory though it is believed that one or two imperfect polynesian vocabularies have been published none of the tahitian dialect has as yet appeared at any rate the author has had access to none whatever in the use of the native words therefore he has been mostly governed by the bare recollection of sounds upon several points connected with the history and ancient customs of tahiti collateral information has been obtained from the oldest books of south sea voyages and also from the polynesian researches of alice the title of the work omu is borrowed from the dialect of the marquesas islands where among other uses the word signifies a rover or rather a person wandering from one island to another like some of the natives known among their countrymen as taboo cannakers in no respect does the...

hi guys welcome to a little exercise now this is for my piano students my cello students my composer students my digital music students everybody and this is a an improvising game so what i want you to do is listen to this piece of music and try and find the root note that's the key note so if this was in c major for example the root note would be c if it was d major the root note would be d and what happens is the root note when you play it sounds in harmony in tune with all the other notes of the piece when it's in the same key now the other thing i want you to do once you've found the root note is i want to think about the timing and the easiest way to do that is to think can you rock to it in which case it's probably three times one two three one two three or can you march to it in which case it's either one two one two one two or one two three four okay so i mean that's the very simplified way of looking at it but do you rock to it or do you march to it and when you're playing when you're improvising you think to yourself can i wha what's the rhythm is it one two three is it a march one two three four okay now don't think about it too hard look at your foot how's your foot tapping to it your foot is a secret tool to finding the timing of things okay after you've found the root note and you've found the timing you can start thinking about your instrument in front of you and what you're going to play now you could just play the root note all the way through so if it was a one two three time you could just play the root note the c say or the d

you could do that and i suggest you do that actually for as long as you get you know before you get really bored of it because after that you're going to think oh that's that's really easy i need to do something else now to it so after that i want you to add the third so if that was c major you'd add the e work out the third note of the scale and then work out the fifth and then you've got the triad you've got the major triad or the minor triad is it a minor or a major key find the notes sometimes the third needs to be flattened so if it was a c minor piece then e natural wouldn't sound right so you need to flatten it so you have to work this out but don't use it don't work it out with a formula work it out with your ears your ears are like your foot they know what you're doing your brain doesn't really have to think about it this is intuition this is musicality and we all have it when you're in front of a piano for example if you're playing a note and it's not working out you can hear it really easily and sometimes it's easier to do this on a piano than it is to do on a cello but another good way of doing it on the cello is to play the open strings and i guess this works for violin as well i'm not a violinist but play the open notes and if you're if you're in c major for example the c would sound right so you could just pit scar to the c all the way through do any of the other strings sound all right if they sound all right you can work out what key it's in but let your ears tell you so have some fun with it and just keep playing it i've done a bit of a rock version i thought it was a bit more interesting and just play around find what you like and then you can always go online and get some other versions but this is great because it's on the app you see and you can just pop your headphones on put your head put one foot headphone in one ear and have the other ear so you can hear your instrument that's the best way of doing it i find another quite cool way of doing it is to um have your headphones plugged into your mic i've got a zoom mic and and that works really in an interesting way as well because you can sort of hear everything it's quite quite cool so all right that's it i'll play it

returning to the spouter inn from the chapel i found queequeg there quite alone he having left the chapel before the benediction some time he was sitting on a bench before the fire with his feet on the stovehearth and in one hand was holding close to his face that little negro idol of his peering hard into its face and with a jackknife gently whittling away at its nose meanwhile humming to himself in his heathenish way but being now interrupted he put up the image and pretty soon going to the table took up a large book there and placing it on his lap began counting the pages with deliberate regularity at every 50th page as i fancied stopping a moment looking vacantly around him and giving utterance to a long drawn gurgling whistle of astonishment he would then begin again at the next fifty seeming to commence at the number one each time as though he could not count more than fifty and it was only by such a large number of 50s being found together that his astonishment at the multitude of pages was excited with much interest i sat watching him savage though he was and hideously marred about the face at least to my taste his countenance yet had something in it which was by no means disagreeable you cannot hide the soul through all his unearthly tattooings i thought i saw the traces of a simple honest heart and in his large deep eyes fiery black and bold there seemed tokens of a spirit that would dare a thousand devils and besides all this there was a certain lofty bearing about the pagan which even his uncouthness could not altogether meme he looked like a man who had never cringed and had never had a creditor whether it was two that his head being shaved his forehead was drawn out in freer and brighter relief and looked more expansive than it otherwise would this i will not venture to decide but certain it was his head was phrenologically an excellent one it may seem ridiculous but it reminded me of general washington's head as seen in the popular busts of him it had the same long regularly graded retreating slope from above the brows which were likewise very projecting like two long promontories thickly wooded on top queequeg was george washington cannibalistically developed whilst i was thus closely scanning him half pretending meanwhile to be looking out at the storm from the casement he never heeded my presence never troubled himself with so much as a single glance but appeared wholly occupied with counting the pages of the marvelous book considering how sociably we had been sleeping together the night previous and especially considering the affectionate arm i had found thrown over me waking in the morning i thought this indifference of his very strange but savages are strange beings at times you do not know exactly how to take them at first they are overawing their calm self-collectedness of simplicity seems a socratic wisdom i had noticed also that queequeg never consorted at all or but very little with the other semen in the inn he made no advances whatever appeared to have no desire to enlarge the circle of his acquaintances all this struck me as mighty singular yet upon second thoughts there was something almost sublime in it here was a man some twenty thousand miles from home by way of cape horn that is which was the only way he could get there thrown among people as strange to him as though he were in the planet jupiter and yet he seemed entirely at his ease preserving the utmost serenity content with his own companionship always equal to himself surely this was a touch of fine philosophy though no doubt he had never heard there was such a thing as that but perhaps to be true philosophers we mortal...

hi folks welcome to moby dick and one chapter after another so i'm going to run it um for five hours and then i'll do the chapters that remain in the next broadcast the next live broadcast i think some people like to read a chapter at a time some people like to just go to bed and put the talking books on and it helps them sleep so this is a great bedtime story and you don't need another person because you have me and you have the reader who is the other one for stuart wills and so i'll just give you a quick rundown um according to stuart uh an obsessive hunt by a crazed captain that's the sort of uh synopsis of the book really um but there are lots of other things and lots of subtext i think good novels have really great subtext don't they i mean we're always looking for the underlying messages or whatever um so it was considered a modern novel in its time which was 1851 which is pretty amazing isn't it and it's got some wonderful descriptions about techniques um for whale hunting which of course we don't really you know in in our modern society where with the rise of vegans and protecting endangered animals it's not quite such a popular subject matter but you have to take yourself out of the current time and put yourself into the time that these books were written and i think that's quite important none of us um really think that we can go around being moby dick anymore do we but it's wonderful to hear um the adventures of history and this goes for you know greek literature as much as um you know victorian literature or edwardian literature it you know it's all of its time so i do hope you enjoy it and um you can always put a comment up and you know ask for requests and things like that but i'm just going to run these through i'm not going to disturb your um reading time by waffling on any more suffice to say telltale club has a massive library i think we've got 4 000 episodes now of wonderful wonderful material archival material and more contemporary material that i do because i'm a music teacher so you can learn to play music here as well and listen to all of the telltale club music broadcasts too which are very exciting um so there we go do join in the project and have some fun with it
