hi tail tellers welcome to the telltale club now then i was thinking that i make these christmas songs and they're only really good aren't they up until christmas and then after that nobody listens to them for like a year and i was thinking wow that was amazing so i figured i better start playing them a lot because i want you all to hear them and then i was also thinking that i wonder if there's a way of making songs sound more christmassy and less christmassy and of course there are some obvious ways aren't there because christmasy songs sound christmassy because they quite often have bells in the background and quite often they say christmas or bells or something christmasy in the title or the words so you know they talk about the manger and baby jesus and things like that there's something else though isn't there about christmas songs that make them sound more christmassy than normal songs well i think it's about the tuning and the way the rhymes are so simple so they're almost like nursery rhymes except they have christmas words in them and the sounds are made more christmasy with things like bells have a listen and see what you think next time you hear other christmas songs you don't have to listen to mine but you can hear any christmas song and have a think and think what's making that sound so christmassy there is something else christmas songs make you really excited i i don't know what to say i can't explain it but there's something about christmas songs that as they're playing you start maybe it's because they talk about presents but you start to think about um santa claus and um snowmen and sacks filled with presents and really nice food don't you why is that that's so weird anyway i've got a couple of songs for you today that are going to help you feel more christmassy silent night by telltale crap and jingle bells also by telltale club and i just thought i'd play these to uh to get us in the mood a bit and share some love share some love so enjoy and i'll be back later

Welcome to the wonderful world of Jazz. Chat and music is the only way to spend the day in my opinion so here is a bit of both.

hi guys so i've done this um track for you halloween rag by the tail teller club it's quite short i didn't um overdo it i was really just playing around with it and i put a drum track to it which i really like and i think that i'm a bit obsessed at the moment with that sort of um drum rhythm that jazz drum rhythm it's just so uh laid back and i think that's it's the drums that always draw me in actually much more i think than the piano it's a sort of boogie woogie piano um i mean i love my piano of course i do but i quite like a slow relaxed type of jazz but a rag is actually you know quite quick um it really traditionally i think it's 120 bpm i think well i'm don't um don't use that in your exam because i could be wrong um so yeah i really like to kind of put a drum track with the piano the sort of basic um almost it feels very improvised doesn't it a lot of jazz feels very improvised that's why it feels like you're there well like you're actually listening to it and then the other thing that i try and do when i'm putting on my layers is i try not to make them too tight and over processed so it kind of gives you that a little a little bit of a sense that you know you are present in the room which is really really difficult when um you know if you use a lot of processing and you use a lot of our um producer tools as it were and digitally and of course the the problem is that digitally because we're using the digital world to get out there with our music we have to use digital tools to help us achieve that and there's nothing more fantastic really than being in a bar um you know two whiskeys in listening to the groove and it not being so tight but it also being really tight do you know what i mean at the same time but i guess it what i'm saying is you you sort of hanker after the um the sense that it's a human being performing and not a machine and that's sometimes quite difficult when you start processing music and you start using a lot of tools so um i've tried to give that sort of five and i hope i did that a bit anyway so here it is here's my uh tail teleclub version of the halloween rag and i hope you like it a rag for halloween performed by tail teller club

Not much is known about the original and most people remember the 1960s version.

hi guys welcome to tell teller club music now this is a podcast just for uh commentary really i'm going to talk about um the various songs that we've been releasing uh myself and the robots so this one i thought was quite a new one when i first came across it i thought it was quite modern i sort of knew it from the animals version anyway it's house of the riding sun let's have a look um so it was actually really really old and it tells of a person's life going really badly wrong in new orleans and um sometimes it's called actually the rising sun blue so it's got a blues tradition um and in that sort of tragic uh way that sun blues comes across it's called blues isn't it um so the the most famous version as i said was recorded in 1964. by a group called the animals and i was born in 1962 but i was too young to remember those them but i remember this version i remember singing it at boarding school with with a guitar you know friends strumming on a guitar we were very hippie-ish she's got this kind of hippie feel to it um so that kind of folk meets 60s hippie vibe and it got to number one it was quite famous

so yeah i wanted to do something a bit different with it i wanted to um give it some uh orchestral vibe really um it probably has its roots in traditional english folk song um you know going way back way back to the sort of 30s and you kind of miss all that when you when you just hear the animals version you don't really hear that so i wanted to feel that kind of sense of um pride really but also extreme sorrow so i introduced when i say pride i guess i mean pride in the history of the roots of the song um i think it's really important i think it's important to feel that when you when you listen to something

and i wanted to make it a bit more dramatic because losing your self to the ills of the city of course is a very dramatic thing to happen isn't it and i wanted to get that across so i i introduced some really big drums um orchestral drums and i also introduced some strings which are you know by nature can be very depressing

hi everybody so just in case you don't know the tale teller club is an umbrella of wonderful wonderful podcasts for educating and entertaining in the arena of music and arts and for that purpose i have a catalogue of sound effects and i update it every day and these are sound effects that we've used in garageband and logic pro and other digital sampling software and processes and you know general digital applications and we take a lot of these sound effects and i've actually also recorded my cat's meow um properly on if you go and look in the catalogue now it's been really hard for me to try and organize all the sound effects i've got hundreds of them on my computer um and it's a shame that they're all just sitting there so we need to get them up and so that you can download them now it's a bit difficult to download them i think from um spotify and itunes and amazon etc all these other places these are you know all over the um internet but if you go to my website you can download them directly from the app it's the spreaker app so it's spreaker that allows you to download um so i've put it we've got our own page up there the sound effects page these are all free i want everyone to be able to use them not just my students so um please enjoy anyway this one is a recording of somebody glugging some water

there we go i hope you enjoy that so if you use that for anything and you send me a link i'll be able to share it around the place and ideally you know these are made for animators and game designers etc but actually you could use them for whatever and they're quite good for sampling as well
