Tales After Midnight

About five years ago I lived downtown in a major city in the US.

I've always been a night person, so I would often find myself bored after my roommate,

who was decidedly not a night person, went to sleep. To pass the time,

I used to go for long walks and spend the time thinking.

I spent four years like that, walking alone at night, and never once had a reason to feel afraid.

I always used to joke with my roommate that even the drug dealers in the city were polite.

But all of that changed in just a few minutes of one evening.

I was eleven years old when I "died”

Most people don't remember the exact day their lives changed forever.

They remember birthdays, holidays, the first time they fell in love.

Me? I remember the smell of damp bark beneath my hands, the laughter of my

best friend somewhere below me, and the sound of an old oak tree groaning like it knew something I didn't.

I still dream about that tree.

Everybody knows that if you surf the web long enough, you'll see some pretty sick shit. I've seen quite a few things I don't care to admit to, but one thing that I'll always remember is a site called "normalpornfornormalpeople . com".

I left a trail of red behind me as I limped towards the inevitable conclusion of this horrible day. Adrenaline seeped slowly from my veins and my limbs grew heavy. My axe felt like it weighed a thousand pounds and I dragged it with me, refusing to drop it.

Subject: Candle Cove local kid’s show?
Does anyone remember this kid’s show? It was called Candle Cove and I must have been 6 or 7. I never found reference to it anywhere so I think it was on a local station around 1971 or 1972. I lived in Ironton at the time. I don’t remember which station, but I do remember it was on at a weird time, like 4:00 PM.

It’s a long story, but one you’ve never heard before. This story is about a place that

dwells on the mountain, a place where bad things happen. And you may think

you know about the bad things; you may decide you have it all figured out,

but you don’t. Because the truth is worse than monsters or men.

With my eyes shut the sounds around me intensified. Between the squishing,

and creaking, and oozing I began to notice a terrible pulsing almost like a heartbeat.

I could feel it in my chest, in the cuts on my side, in my very bones. It seemed to be quickening. And then, from somewhere in front of me,

I heard the horrible sound of meat tearing, a deep and wet sound,

followed by splashing liquid and a heavy thud.

I couldn’t help it, I opened my eyes.

I wasn’t always like this. I mean, sure, it’s been going on for so long that it definitely

feels like it’s always been this way....but I do remember a time where everything

was normal. I remember being a child in a village. Having a father. Having a mother.

I really miss her, my mother. But that all came to an end. I made a bad choice

in my youth and that choice led me into meeting bad people. I’ll spare you all of

the dragged out history but what I can tell you is that I fucked up and I was punished.

Which brings us to my now. The now that never ends.

I couldn’t stop and process the bite on my arm, the ossuary was still open,

and I began to hear a chorus of growls and hisses coming from within. For the first time in my life I felt true unadulterated fear. The kind of fear

that envelopes your body like a lead blanket. I turned and ran, I ran until my legs

almost gave out. Finally I reached the groundskeepers building.

I pulled the door open and threw myself inside.
