This episode is dedicated to everyone out there contending with perimenopause. Yes, this affects the person going through it, and it also affects the people closest to her. You'll hear my stories, who can relate to going to the doctor and feeling dismissed by their reaction? After the reading and research I have done, I share some facts and figures about the process of perimenopause. In particular, I mention the difference between traditional depression and menopausal depression that can occur in perimenopause. Here is the reference for that data I share: Kulkarni et al., 2024, Frontiers in Psychiatry. To find a physician with training in perimenopause, try menopause.org for a directory with The Menopause Society. You don't have to go through this process alone or suffer in silence. We're not doing that anymore! Join us on this multi-part series on this podcast.
You know how we do it around here. I am diving deeper into my conversation with Susan Hyatt. You'll get more tales from me in this episode around my watershed moment. We're also questioning some of the things we've been told regarding beauty standards, "acceptable" movies, and more. Be on the lookout in 2025, if you're wanting to dive deeper into more joy, more peace, more inner confidence, I'll share with you some ways you can do that with me!

What a conversation! We're talking to Susan Hyatt in today's episode, and we're talking about what it costs to keep up with social media today. And we BOTH remember a time before social media was a part of our lives. Social media can be used to help us connect to folks we wouldn't have known otherwise, but it can also become a dark rabbit hole, seeing unrealistic versions of life that we think we have to meet. Susan describes her own muscling through it experience, and we both share a poignant moment in our lives when things really began to change.

In this episode, we follow up on my conversation with Becca and dive deeper into what we talked about. I'm expanding on ethnicity and its impact in childhood and adulthood and using our own senses to improve our lives, rather than be overwhelmed often by our emotions. I also discuss the crucial need to move away from an employee mindset when we become our own boss, and I give an honorable mention to the impact muscling our way through has on our nervous system. And rounding out the episode, I touch on a beautiful part in the episode of Becca realizing she did not have energy for the people she loves the most and how she changed things up to regain that energy for her loved ones. We get personal: our stories matter. We also get brainy: we're talking about four key needs of every child and what happens when these are not met over and over again. I share about my tremendous love and devastating loss in childhood. And can we really heal trauma? What exactly is trauma anyway? Let's dive in.

Unhelpful thoughts, who else has these?? They run like in the background of your brain, like the apps on your phone, draining valuable energy and leading to burnout. How do we build a life that feels better? It is so important to identify unhelpful thoughts, get curious about them, decide what you would prefer to think, and take action. Easier said than done but let's give it a go!

In this first episode, I draw back the curtain on my life in progress. We go from homeless to multi-business owner, real talk about this entrepreneurial journey, and how the past can impact and influence the present. I share a few of the steps I took to get to where I am today, including helping start a non-profit organization. Life gets very interesting when you dare to step off the paved road, or more accurately stated, when life shoves you off the rails. Wriggle around in the dirt for a while but eventually, stand back up, dust yourself off, and figure out how to build your own rails.
