Anyone who has ever attended a holiday play at their local community theatre  has likely seen one or more of these seven plays: "A Christmas Carol", "A Christmas Story", "Miracle on 34th Street", "It's a Wonderful Life", "A Charlie Brown Christmas", "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas", or "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever".  Almost every community theatre performs one of these shows every year.  Everyone knows them. It's like comfort food for theatre audiences.
 
But what would happen if someone tried to combine all of these familiar plays into one crazy, mixed-up, holiday mash-up of a show?  That's what Winking Kat has done in this new audio play for our Tales in the Air podcast.  Like "A Christmas Carol", Scrooge is visited by three spirits who take him on a journey to redeem his stingy soul.  But, in our adaptation, Scrooge's past, his present, and future, are nothing like the moments he visits in Dicken's original story - nor are the spirits. 

Tales in the Air is a new podcast channel featuring audio dramas, comedies, limited series, and musicals for adult listeners.  It is a subsidiary of Winking Kat Books that also produces the podcast for young audiences, Winking Kat Tales, offering original musical stories for young audiences every month. 

This holiday episode of Tales in the Air was recorded in Duvall, Washington at Top of the Hill Studios.  Our cast includes:  Todd Morgan, Phillip Keiman, Jessica Robins, Adrian Cerrato, Hannah Coleman, Arwen Dewey, Max Lopuszynski, Rachel Glass, Rachel Rene Aracto, Jack Anderson, Ellen Dessler Smith, Harry Turpin, Hilary Heinz Luthi, and Patricia Haines.  Music provided through Evato.

Jeff Walker wasn't happy.  He wasn't happy with life, his job, or his marriage.  The one thing that brought him a few brief moments of pleasure was fishing at his favorite pond in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey.  Hundreds of days, Jeff stood by the murky water catching perch, sunfish, and pickerel  and never met the devil.  But one Sunday in the Spring of 2003, that fact was about to change. 

Washington Irving wrote his short story, "The Devil and Tom Walker"  in 1824.  It was a story about a discontented and bitter man who traded his soul to the Jersey Devil for a trove of pirate treasure.   Winking Kat updated the setting of the story to our century, but we kept much of the events of the original story intact.  It just goes to show there will always be some who are willing to make a deal with the devil for money and power that it provides.

Will Jeff Walker suffer the same fate as his nineteenth century counterpart or will he escape his fate with the help of his well-meaning receptionist, Pam McGinty?   You'll have to listen to find out.
