Sometimes an opportunity unfolds itself and you need to take it. In this case, in the form of a chat with a former student. I took notes but I hope that in the future I could do a podcast with the ex-student for now, I concentrated on a couple of points: 1. Feedback that tutors give during the design process and, 2. Learning from doing academic programs (studio projects) and working outside (competition or office) at the same time.

This is the concluding part of the three-part episode on “Is the Architecture Culture in an Office, a Club?”.
We defined further the definition of ‘club’ under the sub-topic of “ a new culture that respects time” is needed, where ‘time’ is currently perceived as a commodity to argue and for the sake of mental health but 'time' is needed to be seen as a ‘rights’ to leisure time and rest to achieve a work-life balance. Could this happen - a change and shift in perception about 'time' and how it will affect the architecture culture in an architecture office?

A summary of findings from a Facebook group discussion focusing on the meaning of 'club' to be “boys club” where there is a "glass ceiling" that limit women architects to be promoted in an architectural company. Some interesting insights from quotes discussed on what is an “architecture culture”, where we can start our research on this topic by asking the question of - (1) what are the many architecture culture in the different companies or/and (2) what are the approaches in managing different projects from 5-15 staff members of a company and why the need for an architecture culture.

This is the 2nd Episode of Season 13, focused on "Architects and Mental Health". Using their own experience after graduating from Part 2, Naziaty reflected on the incident when they started work at a company in Malaysia, where they felt like a "failure", as they did not fit in the office culture. On observation, it was a great learning encounter, where in the bigger picture of understanding stress and burnout issues that architects may be facing in architecture practice, this episode sets up further discussion on this matter on the 'architecture culture' in architecture practice. This Part 1 episode places the primary awareness, where Part 2 will focus on defining further what is 'architecture culture' and how it relates to architecture education. The use of the term, 'club' (in the title) will be explained in Part 2.

Starting off the new season - Season 13 - the article "Profession of Architecture - A profession of stress?" is reviewed and commented upon by the host, Naziaty Mohd Yaacob. The article contained information that is commonly accepted on what architects do, but has not been critical enough in examining what is "architecture culture". However, this is the first episode of this season, which is a journey of discovering issues on "architects and mental health" covering both architecture practice and education. We look forward to more discussions and a thorough examination of this topic in the coming months.
Naziaty also runs a program and helps architects overcome stress & burnout to achieve their work-life balance which you can find the information HERE.

The concluding part of a trilogy of episodes focuses on summaries and ideas of what has been said, and a proposal of the direction Malaysian schools of architecture need to take when considering what 'architecture' is in the bigger scheme of things. It is evident that architecture is the 'mother' of all creative endeavors and not to be adopted by engineering and science, and be where it always has been in society, at the heart of Arts and Humanities.
Hence this led to justification for broad-based education and not specialization, especially in the first degree of architecture course in a 'university' (The word university is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, which roughly means "community of teachers and scholars"). Flexibility is the key to the individual student to expand themselves further either in the master's course or a related masters course or after Part 2.

This episode continues with a discussion on Architecture Education and the direction that schools of architecture in Malaysia may take in lieu of ARB’s proposal. Link to article.
At least this gives food for thought on that development and the questions to be asked in the bigger picture of future guidance.

I attended the Final Crit of Unit B, at the end of the first degree architecture course program at UCSI University in Kuala Lumpur, yesterday and had an absolutely positive and interesting time with my fellow guest critic and students who presented. This is an honest review of what I experienced regarding the students presentation and program that they did. Thank you to Bak and Gibert, two of the tutors of the unit who invited and assisted me.

Post Script - this is a summary of the discussion and debate based on the latest interview with Cheah Kok Ming and others such as Lillian and Lok Wooi plus the clubhouse discussion in the last weeks on “broad-based versus specialized education” and “culture of critique”.
This opinion piece by Naziaty, the host of this podcast, suggests the direction of Malaysian schools of architecture, to really question our aims, goals, and intention when it comes to the interest of architecture graduates.
