In the vast majority of cases where an independent film making crew undertakes the daunting task of assembling a feature length film, it is my belief that they are looking past the fact that budgetary limitations will hamper their ability to bring their visions to life on screen in as full a way as they'd like.  Often times the results come off as comical or inept, despite the earnestness of the creators desire to tell the best story they can.  Very rarely does the opposite happen, where the limitations empower a film densely packed with such timeless beauty and emotional impact as Night Of The Living Dead.

While not every sequence will work to the sensibilities of a modern audience, Night contains the emotional impact and philosophical themes that have resonated with society over it's 50 year life that it has led to an explosion of Zombie relevance in modern culture in a way that nobody could have predicted, making an impact on humanity in ways similar to the novels of Frankenstein and Dracula had in the century preceding cinema.  That's something very special indeed.

The cultural expectations of Christmas cheer has long provided fertile soil for satirists and subversive artists.  It’s been over 50 years (at the time of this recording, it’s not impossible that by the time you’re reading this it has been many more) since the cartoon version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas was released back in 1966, a story featuring narration by none other than Golden Age Horror legend Boris Karloff.  Far from the first, I’m certain, but perhaps one that is as near culturally Universal as I might be able to cite.

It should be no surprise then, that as horror movie fans, we have many options to explore within our profane catalog.  The earliest that comes to mind is the proto-slasher Black Christmas (1974).  The slasher-slasher Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) is a favorite.  Oh, and if you don’t like Gremlins (1984)...if only because it spawned the brilliant Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1992), I don’t even know what you’re doing here.  Matt probably hasn’t seen any of these, but I also know he hadn’t seen Better Watch Out (2016), and I wanted to take on the challenge of trying to convince him that this too, is a Christmas tradition quality film.  I think I was making some headway, although I may have gone too far when I pressed the idea of a sequel, knowing full well how resistant that bugger is to sequels as a general rule.

I’m also hoping I might be turning some other people on to a newer film that may not penetrated the zeitgeist as much as some of it’s older relatives, or the recent spate of Krampus centered films that seem to get a bit of a higher profile due to the fact that an evil Santa demon with goat legs that either fights not-demon Santa, eats children, or delivers spankings to women on the street (hey man, I didn’t write the story, I’m just relaying the research) is admittedly bad ass.  Consider joining us at the Talk Horror To Me Facebook group, or at one of the links below, and letting us know what you think about it, and whether or not you had seen the movie before.

  If you happen to be recording canon, one of the things I’m vocal in my support of is horror-comedy.  One thing I tend to not be a fan of is horror movies from about 1992-2014. There are exceptions, of course, but generally speaking, I found this long stretch to be a bit of a wasteland.  Imagine my surprise then, when Behind the Mask came along and shattered my my cynicism by delivering as the best meta-horror comedy for my money since Return of the Living Dead (1984).  Two DECADES of waiting.  Now, 12 years hence, meta humor is so ubiquitous that we see it in every genre and with great frequency.  I don’t pick a side on the matter. I enjoy judging each piece on it’s merit, but some of it is good and some of it is very bad, but rarely, even still, is it usually this great.

  Matt and I both really dug the movie.   If you’ve seen it, hopefully you’ll enjoy our conversation about it.  If you haven’t, maybe we’ll get you to put it on your list. Either way, thanks so much for stopping by, we really appreciate it!

Terrifier is a low budget, dark and slimy slasher that harkens back to films coming out of New York and Italy in the late 70s.  Not for everyone I reckon, but I loved it.  Matt did too.  That said, I think there's some good debates to be had about this movie, and I hope we do a decent job of getting some of those started in this episode.

In this very timely episode, released well after the movie has cleared the theaters, we take a rather deep look at the 2018 reboot of Halloween.  If you haven't seen it, you should!  It's good!  For your sake, we've tried hard to be as careful as we can around spoilers.  Everyone has a different tolerance of such things, but if you have a little patience, I don't think we spill too much.  If you HAVE seen it, this is obviously a must listen affair.  So what are you waiting for???

Matt and I are both a bit less enthused by Pet Sematary than we have been by previous review material, but the film is unquestionably worth discussing.  It's got some memorable moments and concepts, and provides ample room to discuss as it stands alone, within the greater context of Stephen King and his adaptations, and in terms of the potential for the upcoming 2019 remake.

Having recorded ahead a few shows, I can tell you that Murder Party plays a big part of our early arc, as we're big fans of not only Jeremy Saulnier who wrote and directed this before going on to direct the brilliant Green Room (2015), but also Macon Blair, who appears here, and goes on to write and direct the gem I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore (2017).  Tangentially horror, all, but great movies none the less.

We reference a slew of different media here outside the movies.  If you care to check any of those out, I'm including some links at the bottom.  For me, personally, I'd like to reiterate that if you enjoy the idea of a long form podcast about horror cinema, you can't do better than Jay of the Dead and the crew over at The Horror Movie Podcast.  I personally enjoy several horror podcast on the regular, and I hope to pay my respects to all of them as our series grows, but those folks are the ones that got me fired up about the medium.

A couple of times in the episode we reference an episode featuring The Frighteners (1996).  Matt did his best to hold the show together, but I was simply too scatterbrained to communicate effectively for the duration of the show.  Rather than release garbage, we decided to scrap it.  Then...the brilliant idea hit me to edit it down to only the best parts, and place it at the end of this episode.  Enjoy that 11 minutes of nonsense if you're here for the shenanigans.
