On this episode of the TalkGOP podcast I interview my friend Frances Arthur.  Frances is a long time conservative and also happens to be an event planner for weddings and other events.

Frances shares tips on how to have a successful political event such as:

* HAVE A PLAN! (planning - good: winging it - bad).

* Have greeters at the door to make everyone feel welcome.

* Have hosts who are responsible for making sure everyone mingles.

* Considerations on seating arrangements

* Ideal program length (1.5 hours)

* No tall table centerpieces!

 

Frances is also running for the Tennessee Republican Party executive committee.  We discuss her work with young conservatives and what motivates her to run.  Finally she has a few comments on the so-called "War on Women."

This week on the podcast it's lucky Episode #13.  In honor of the 13th Episode I thought we would have a little fun. 13 Ways to Avoid Political Bad Luck.

1. Don't forget your three main points.  Especially in public, especially in a big debate, especially in front of the whole country.  (See Rick Perry)  For more information on making a speech with three main points you can listen to Episode 8  at TalkGOP.com/8. 

2. Don't stand in the rain.  William Henry Harrison was elected in 1840. The day that Harrison was sworn into office was rainy and cold, and to make matters worse, the newly elected president chose to deliver his entire 8,444-word speech . A month later he was dead of pneumonia.

3.  Don't talk to Jon Stewart.  He's funnier than you, and he is more clever.  You can only come out looking dumb.

4.   (This rule only applies to Republicans)   Don't have an affair, especially an affair with women who live in another country.

5. Don't get secretly recorded in private.   And NO SELFIES.

6.  Don't have a funny name.  And yes, Weiner is a funny name.

7. Don't be boring.  If you are boring, don't have an affair to liven things up. (see Rule #4)

8.  Don't be clueless.  If you don't know why you are running, no one else will either.

9. Don't be Orange.  Fake tan, fake hair, cheap suit.  Don't look fake. Or blue.

10. Don't wear Stupid Hats .  Especially if you have a funny name. Like Dukakis. Or John Kerry

11. Don't talk about rape.

12.  Don't LIE. Read my lips, if you like your insurance you can keep it.

13.  DON'T BE DUMB.  If you think islands can tip over maybe congress isn't for you.

* Obamacare was sold under false pretenses.

* Obamacare will Not reduce the actual cost of health care (even if it spends less)

* Obamacare will not increase the availibility of health care.

* Government supply of health care is not morally superior.

* Mandated Government health care is a threat to individual liberty.

This week on the podcast I take a look at free speech rights of the religious. Do the religious have a right to engage in political debate? Or should they keep their opinion to themselves?

Lately on social media I keep getting into debates where I hear comments like this:

* Religious people can be individually religious. They can NOT impose their ridiculous personal belief systems on others.

* No one is calling for those people who MUST have the psychological crutch of religion to maintain their cowardly existence in a sane, civilized manner to leave that religion. Simply keep your delusional beliefs to yourself. Exercise your civil rights only to the extent of where other people's civil rights begin. Do not attempt to force your delusional beliefs on others who do not need your superstition to maintain sanity.

* I have a big problem with words like "MORAL" ,because individual rights should never be restricted by other people's moral beliefs.

 

These sort of comments seemed to be based on the following assumptions.

* Religion should be kept private and has no place in the public sphere.

* Secular life therefore excludes religion

* Religious people are somewhat suspect and dangerous

* Any exercise or religious rights in the public sphere infringes on the rights of others.

* Laws should not be based on MORAL considerations

 

To properly address these accusations I think it is important to take a close look at the First Amendment.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

In this podcast I discuss how the First Amendment protects the rights of the religious to speak out freely and advocate for laws they believe in.

I also discuss why supporting a law BECAUSE of your religious beliefs is not the same thing as IMPOSING YOUR RELIGION, and the fact that all laws impose on others by definition.

The U.S. congress is currently engaged in an attempt to pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform.  It seems to me that the debate and news coverage has centered around which personality can come up with a secret backroom deal that can pass.  In this episode, I attempt to redirect the discussion back to some basic questions about the immigration debate: 

* How many immigrants should come to the U.S. each year?

* Who should we allow to immigrate?

* What are some of the factors that affect our decisions about who is allowed to come to America?

* Are those who oppose the Comprehensive Immigration bill necessarily racist?

* Why do people feel so strongly about the amnesty question?

* How important is future enforcement of the law?

I thought about naming this episode "537 Reasons Why Your Political Speech Should Have 3 Main Points" but I was afraid it would scare you away. But how often have you heard a speech that seemed like it had 537 points? This seems to especially be the case with political speeches.  In today’s episode I want to encourage you that the next time you have to give a speech try to limit yourself only three main points.

Now in keeping with this advice I am going to structure the podcast today with three main points. We are going to talk about the following three main points.

* Why you should use only three main points.

* Reasons why people use more (many more) than three points

* How to structure your speech using three main points.

Reasons to use only three main points

* It’s easy for you to organize and remember your speech.

* Three points is an easy number for your audience to remember.

* Three points is enough to show your competence.

* You don’t want to bore/annoy/frustrate your audience.

* Emphasize strong points.

Reasons why speakers use more than three points

* The speaker is unprepared.

* The speaker is trying to impress.

* Because the speaker is insecure and is trying to “prove” themselves to the audience.

* If some proof is good, even more is better right?

* The endless resume

* “I’m a good speaker”

How the three point speech works

Obviously the structure of a three point speech is  fairly straight forward.

* Introduction

* Main Point One - Supporting Points

* Main Point Two - Supporting Points

* Main Point three - Supporting Points

* Summary and Conclusion

* Shut Up

 

The three points allow you to develop contrast.  Typically you would arrange three points like this.

* Strong Point

* Weaker Point

* Strongest Point

 

Another form of three point speech addresses a specific problem and solution.

* Problem Statement

* Compounding Problem

* Solution

 

Regardless of what form you use, pick three points that are relevant to your audience and deliver with confidence!
