  • Episode 99 - THE Suicide Squad

Oh man. After MONTHS of just terrible, mediocre movies, not only do we have a gem, not only do we have something refreshing, but we quite possibly have the best movie of the year. That's right. On today's episode of #talkintv, Dom & Chris are joined by longtime movie critic and Dom's old friend, Dustin "The Duster" Mason of Mr. G Movie Reviews to talk about James Gunn's THE Suicide Squad. A 2021 American superhero film based on DC Comics featuring the team Suicide Squad, based on the comics by John Ostrander. Produced by DC Films, Atlas Entertainment, and The Safran Company, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is a standalone sequel to Suicide Squad (2016) and the tenth film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Written and directed by Gunn and starring an ensemble cast comprised of Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, David Dastmalchian, Daniella Melchior, Jai Courtney, Peter Capald & Taika Waititi. The film sees Amanda Waller (Davis) assembling a new Task Force X to infiltrate a South American island nation known as Corto Maltese to destroy a Nazi-era laboratory known as Jotunheim, which secretly contains the giant alien starfish known as Starro the Conqueror. David Ayer was set to return as director for a Suicide Squad sequel by March 2016, but in December he chose to develop a Gotham City Sirens film instead. Warner Bros. considered several replacement directors before hiring Gavin O'Connor in September 2017. He left by October 2018, and Gunn was hired to write and direct the film after being temporarily fired by Disney and Marvel Studios as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He drew inspiration from war films and John Ostrander's 1980s Suicide Squad comics, and decided to explore new characters in a story separate from the first film's narrative, though some cast members do return from Suicide Squad. Filming began in Atlanta, Georgia, in September 2019, and concluded in Panama in February 2020. The film was released on August 5th, 2021, simultaneously debuting in theaters and on HBO Max, and the box office is currently suffering from it as the film only debuted to a measly $12.2 million domestically, as the Delta Variant surges across the United States. Dom, Chris & Dustin talk about all the ways in which the film is a vast improvement over the original, how it adds some much needed life to the ever-growing stale superhero genre, but mostly how it gave us seemingly the one thing we've been missing from this summer: a good, fun, entertaining, well made blockbuster. • Talkin' Thrones Episode 13 - What is Dead may never Die

On tonight's episode of Talkin' Thrones, we've got a huge one, arguably the first gangbuster episode of a gangbuster season. Season 2, Episode 3, entitled What is Dead may never Die! The Greyjoy phrase to describe their way of life, which fits because Theon Greyjoy & House Greyjoy are our Focus Character and GOT-chaverse segment tonight! This is such a jam packed episode, because things are ramping up in the war of the 5 Kings. North of the Wall, Jon Snow is confronted with the horrible truth of what Craster does to his sons. Then we get to the three main storylines of the episode: Catelyn Stark arrives at Renly Baratheon's camp, where we meet two new major characters: Margaery Tyrell and Brienne of Tarth. In King's Landing, Tyrion makes the power play to end all power plays by wisely figuring out who Cersei's informant is. On the Iron Islands, Theon finds himself between a rock and a hard place when he learns his father's plans to attack the North while Robb is away at war, and makes a horrible decision. And finally to end it all, Arya's camp is attacked and she is taken prisoner by the Lannisters. It was a crazy episode with a lot of stuff happening, and we hope you continue to join us for more every week, it's all covered here on tonight's episode of #talkinthrones

  • Episode 98 - Dave, Physical, and more 2021 TV

On tonight's episode of the #talkintvpodcast, we take a little bit of a step back from the dreadful and disappointing movies of 2021 to talk about what's in the title of our show, TV! We've been gifted with TV this year in a way that movies really have not been holding up to, and we first wanted to talk about some of our favorite shows of the year, the shows that really, truly exemplify the best of the best in the episodic storytelling landscape, such as For all Mankind, Hacks, Feel Good, After Life, The Morning Show, Ted Lasso, etc. So many great shows, so few people watching them. Then, Dom & Chris break down quite possibly their favorite show of the year, Physical, starring Rose Byrne, who portrays an 80's housewife with a severe eating disorder and an even louder self deprecating inner monologue who finds an escape from the hectic nature of her life through aerobics. It's everything we want from television and storytelling in 2021 in how raw and three dimensional all of its characters are. Then, they talk about the sophomore effort from Lil' Dicky's hit show on FX & Hulu, Dave, and how it seems to be more meandering and treading water this season rather than having any real focus, but how that seems to be the intent as a personification of Dave Burd/Lil' Dicky's real life struggles. It's another really fun episode, much more casual and laid back, and another reminder that we do more on this show than just the movie of the week. It's all covered here on #talkintv

  • Episode 97 - Ted Lasso Season 2/Old

Alright people, it's that time of the year again, for the debut of another sophomore season of THE hit comedy of 2020, as well as the return of a certain twisty filmmaker, we've got a double batch for you on the #talkintv show here today, we're reviewing the debut of Season 2 of Ted Lasso on Apple TV+, and on the movie side of things, we're reviewing M. Night Shyamalan's brand new movie, Old! Ted Lasso is an American comedy streaming television series developed by Bill Lawrence, Jason Sudeikis, Joe Kelly, and Brendan Hunt, based on a character of the same name whom Sudeikis first portrayed in a series of promos for NBC Sports' coverage of the Premier League. The series premiered with the first three episodes on Apple TV+ on August 14, 2020, and was renewed five days later for a second season of 12 episodes, which premiered on July 23, 2021. In October 2020, the series was renewed for a third season. The series follows titular American Ted Lasso, a coach of college-level American football, who is unexpectedly recruited to coach an English Premier League team, AFC Richmond, despite having no experience in association football. The series also co-stars Brendan Hunt, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster, Jeremy Swift & Nick Mohammed, and is just as cheery, heartwarming, and unexpectedly emotional as the first time around. Then we have M. Night Shyamalan's Old. Old is a 2021 American science fiction mystery thriller film written, directed, and produced by M. Night Shyamalan, inspired by the Swiss graphic novel "Sandcastle" by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters. The film's ensemble cast includes Gael García Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Eliza Scanlen, Thomasin McKenzie, Alex Wolff, Abbey Lee, Aaron Pierre, Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Embeth Davidtz, Emun Elliott, and Kathleen Chalfant. The film follows a group of people who find themselves aging rapidly on a secluded beach from which they cannot escape. The film was announced in October 2019 after Shyamalan read the graphic novel by Levy and Peeters. The cast joined the following summer, with filming taking place from September to November in the Dominican Republic. It marked the first film of Shyamalan's career to have no shooting take place around his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Following a delay attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, Old was theatrically released on July 23, 2021, in the United States, by Universal Pictures, and hoo boi, is this another Shyamalan stinker or is this more of what we're used to? Tune in to find out, it's all covered  here on the Talkin' TV Podcast!

  • Episode 96 - Space Jam: A New Legacy

Alright people, for tonight's episode, we're doing something completely different. And by we, I mean I. Chris is on a well deserved vacation, which left me by myself to review Space Jam: A New Legacy. And oh man, did we have a lot to talk about here. Space Jam: A New Legacy is a 2021 American live-action/animated sports comedy film directed by Malcolm D. Lee, serving as a standalone sequel to 1996's Space Jam. It is the first theatrically-released film to feature the Looney Tunes characters since Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003), and is also a combination of live-action, traditional hand-drawn animation, and 3D CGI effects. The film stars basketball player LeBron James as a fictionalized version of himself, along with Don Cheadle, Khris Davis, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Cedric Joe in live-action roles, while Jeff Bergman, Eric Bauza, and Zendaya headline the Looney Tunes voice cast. Set in a shared Warner Bros. virtual space multiverse, the film follows James teaming up with the Looney Tunes to win a basketball match against digitized champions to rescue his son from a rogue artificial intelligence (AI). Talks for a Space Jam successor began after the release of the first film, which Joe Pytka would have returned to direct. Spike Brandt and Tony Cervone signed on as the animation supervisors, but eventually the deal fell through due to Michael Jordan's refusal to return. Several possible spin-offs focusing on other athletes, including Jeff Gordon, Tiger Woods, and Tony Hawk, were also discussed, but never came to fruition. After several years of languishing, a LeBron James-led sequel was officially announced in 2014 with filming under Terence Nance took place from June to September 2019 around Los Angeles. After a few weeks into filming, Nance left the project and Lee was hired to replace him in July 2019. Dom talks about the troubled path this film had on its way to the big screen, its similarities to the first one and ultimately how the same thing ultimately makes this more of a commercial than an actual film. • Episode 95 - Black Widow

We're back people! This is it! After a long wait, the MCU has finally made its long awaited return to theaters, with the long delayed Black Widow! Black Widow is a 2021 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studio Motion Pictures, it is the 24th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Cate Shortland from a screenplay by Eric Pearson, and stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, alongside Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O-T Fagbenle, Olga Kurylenko, William Hurt, Ray Winstone & Rachel Weisz Set after the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016), the film sees Romanoff on the run and forced to confront a conspiracy tied to her past. The #talkintv boys discuss the implications of the latest installment of the MCU after 6 months of straight MCU content from Disney+, whether the very poor timing and long delay of this movie justifying its existance, and whether Scarlett's as usual impeccable performance as the character is enough to carry it, as well as the legacy of the character moving forward.
