Amy Black of Pink Ink Fund is one of the most captivating people I have ever met. Her skills as an artist are unmatched and her heart is beyond full of goodness and kindness. She maybe one of the most friendly and approachable people I have ever met and makes you instantly feel like someone important to her. The Pink Ink Fund has helped many woman find normalcy in a tragic life situation and my interview with Amy is to celebrate what she has done for these woman and how she has changed their lives.
In our interview we discussed her beginnings in art and tattooing and how she ended up doing nipple tattooing and how she started the Pink Ink Fund. We talked about how she became involved with the RVA Beard League and how they have helped her tremendously with their gracious donations. The interview took place at The Canal Club in downtown Richmond Virginia and was during the registration for the 2018 Remington Beard Boss Great American Beard and Mustache Championships. Along with the National Humane Society, The Pink Ink Fund were to be the recipients for the money that this event generated and Amy felt so thankful to be apart of this event. Listen along as her and I, and her little French, Poppy Goblin, learn about the charity angle of a beard competition from the side of someone who received the money and how they have used it to make a difference.

Sometimes called pre-judging, though there are no scores involved at this step, the pre-jurors see that competitors are in fact entered in the category to which they are most suited, much like the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter. They determine a competitor's category, making sure lengths are accurate and what's presented matches the criteria for your category. While a competitor may believe he or she should be in one specific category, the panel assures that the judges are evaluating like competitors and that you're on-stage in the right category.
In order to minimize your time standing in line, we've doubled the Pre-Jury and Registration Panel since the last time in Denver. We'll have a total of 8 pre-jurors at 4 tables with 2 registration stations, with half of them dedicated to Full Beard category competitors. Pre-jurors will be paired and evaluating facial hair types for which they would be ineligible, e.g.. Moustache competitors will be evaluated by Full Beard pre-jurors. ***Artistic category competitors will need have a photo of their creation on hand, if they're not wearing it, for the pre-jurors to evaluate. ***
THERE WILL BE 2 WINDOWS FOR REGISTRATION AND CHECK-IN: EARLY (FRI NIGHT) AND DAY-OF.
⇨ The first, and preferred, is Early Registration on Friday night at the Welcome Party + Merch Market for the 2018 GABMC at the Canal Club, from 7:00-9:30 PM. That way you already have your number and swag bag, you can just show your ticket to get in on Saturday, and you won't have to carry around your swag bag all day Saturday. We'll have a basic pre-jury panel there Friday night to get you registered and checked in.
⇨ The second is Day-of Registration on-site at the Remington Beard Boss 2018 Great American BMC at The National, from 1:00-3:00 PM. We'll have our full panel there to speed things along.
The following prejurors are all knowledgeable, experienced competitors and judges who understand how important it is that you're in the right category. These folks know what to look for.

Rita Bielefeldt
Calling the woods of Northern California home, her ties and history with the European beard and moustache clubs run deep. She attended her first World Beard and Moustache Championship with her husband Aarne back in 2009 in Anchorage and they have made it to every WBMC since. A seasoned judge and competitor since 2011, Rita's competed and placed at dozens of competitions all over the country. In 2013 in Germany, she placed at the first and only (so far) Whiskerina event in Europe.
Aside from being the resident cat lady, she enjoy reading science fiction, and likes to sew, craft, and oil paint, along with gardening and traveling. Though recently much of her and Aarne's time has been devoted to rebuilding and cleaning up their property after losing their outlying structures, water system, and vehicles in last fall's firestorms that swept through that region. Their house was amazingly spared, but there's still much work to be done before their home is anywhere back to normal.
Rita loves all of the wonderful friends she has made from all over the world, where every comp is like going to a big family reunion, only with the best family you could have. Please welcome California's Rita Schoeberlein Bielefeldt!

Jeremy Smith
current member and former president of Spokane Beard & Mustache in Washington state, Jeremy Smith! Dedicated to his Whaler beard, he first got into bearding 2014 when he finally got up the nerve to go to a meeting. The community quickly became something he loved, and threw himself into it because of the people involved and charity aspect. Over the past 6 years, and with his guidance through several years, WBMA - World Beard and Moustache Association member club Spokane Beard & Mustache has raised over $75,000 for local charities.
Jeremy's traveling has been limited due to multiple back surgeries, but has managed to take home several partial beard trophies over the years and judged at competitions in the U.S. and Canada, not to mention learning from some of the best judges around at Spokane's own competition over the years.
A devoted fan of Montucky Cold Snacks (a brand of Northwest lager that donates 8% back to local causes), he's been a Teamster Warehouseman for 22 years, and married to his wife Heather for 18. They have 2 kids, Taylor (26) and Chloe (19), and they now enjoy their empty nest if you don't count Otis (6), their 150 lb. Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix. Please welcome Washington's Jeremy Smith!

A man of creative and artistic talent, he got his start in beard competitions back in 2013, and since then has had the opportunity to spend a lot of time on both sides of the judging table. He has racked up many 1st Place finishes in Full Beard Freestyle and Full Beard Groomed categories at numerous competitions across the country.
Outside of bearding, Jason owns and operates One Eyed Cat Curiosities and Crafts, a handmade functional ceramics business that specializes in cups and mugs with moustache guards. We're willing to bet many of you have some sitting at home or work. Please welcome Wisconsin's Jason Kiley!

The vision of an animal sanctuary and a pit bull rescue were just two of the ideas of Bully Ranch, recently started by married couple Paul Hendrix and Diane Blastic. Paul and Diance, members of the Austin Facial Hair Club, have been working with pitbulls for sometime now and have nothing but love and admiration for the breed. They have invested considerable time into understanding the training and the demeanor of this often understood animal.
In our conversation about Bully Ranch, we touched upon how everything finally came together for this to happen and how the loss of their beloved Trejo was the final piece. "His death devastated us. It was also the catalyst for getting our butts in gear to follow our dream of opening a pitbull rescue and rehabilitation center with the intent of becoming a City of Refuge for all animals. Welcome to Bully Ranch!"(-taken from Bully Ranch IG @bullyranchatx ). We discussed the importance of training and understanding your dog and the signs it may show you of being in distress, as well as how to handle those situations with proper techniques. They stressed that the importance of training is more for the human than it is for the dog. Understanding your dog's trigger points and stress factors and how to adjust your approach to a situation is a good way gain your dog's trust.
Paul also announced a partnership Bully Ranch had recently made and he broke the news with all of us in the beard community. The Austin Facial Hair Club has done many charity events over the years to help raise money for the local animal shelter, such as their annual Dog Beard and Mustache Competition which is emceed by Paul. The facial hair community has given a lot to animal rescues and shelters nationwide and are one of the more popular of charities donated to for many events. It seems to me that beards and dogs go hand-in-paw when it comes to the nature of this community.
I hope that you enjoy this episode and learn more about Bully Ranch. If you feel compelled, check out bullyranch.org and make a donation or order a sweet shirt. There was so much valuable information given by both Paul and Diane about their dreams for Bully Ranch and I very much enjoyed talking to them and learning about what they have planned!

Kenny Parbel is the President of the Ohio Chapter and SGT. At-Arms for the National Chapter of Bearded Sinners. Upon learning of who the Bearded Sinners were, my world was opened to another side of the "bearding community" that I wasn't aware existed. Both Kenny and I got our start in the club scene at the same event back in 2012 and didn't even know we had crossed paths numerous times. We "officially" met at the Morgan Hose VFD fundraiser beard and mustache contest, EP.71 (http://thebeardcaster.libsyn.com/podcast/ep71-morgan-hose-volunteer-fire-department-fundraiser) and he pulled me aside and wanted to tell me about their annual fundraiser Pig Roast they hold that was coming up Labor Day weekend. We set up a time to meet and got together at a small bar in Ravena, Ohio and enjoyed a couple adult beverages and had a chat about beards and clubs and social issues. We talked about the history and nuances of The Bearded Sinners and how they have gone under my radar for the past few years. My eyes were really opened to a side of the beard "clubs" that don't really participate in the competitive charity beard events and focus more on local community outreach and local fundraising. We also discussed the issues of assembling chapters of a club and the problems they have come across in the past. If you like the message of the Bearded Sinners and are interested in checking out more about their club goto https://www.facebook.com/BSBCOHIO/ to get more information.

It's a facial hair competition. The rules are simple: show up on time, be in the right category, and don't whine if you don't get first. It goes without saying, but artificial hair is grounds for disqualification. Leave the weave at home (unless you're one of our wonderful whiskerinas).
With ten categories that run the gamut from close-cropped Business Beard to gnarly, balls-to-the-wall Full Beard Freestyle, there's a place for everyone, even the ladies. Check out our categories below and choose the one that's most appropriate for you. If you aren't sure, get the one that fits the closest and we'll help you find the right category on the day of.
Judging is based on aesthetic qualities including health, thickness, length, and color, in addition to how well the facial hair enhances the competitor's overall style.
For the sake of time, categories are capped at 40 entrants on a first-come, first-served basis.
Styling aids are aids which help shape the hair including wax, hairspray, gel, scotch tape, goat saliva, or whatever else you choose to use. Wires are not permitted.
All hair on the face counts toward your category. If you rock wicked mutton chops with that 'stache, that counts as a partial beard, not a moustache. We're not going to "Just ignore the soul patch, dude." When you show up you will be pre-judged to make sure you're in the right category, so make sure to register for the category that fits best.
NATURAL MOUSTACHE
Moustache hairs must not grow from beyond 1.5 centimeters past the corner of the lip. Styling aids are forbidden, but conditioners and curlers are allowed.
STYLED MOUSTACHE
Moustache hairs must not grow from beyond 1.5 centimeters past the corner of the lip. All shapes and styles are allowed. Go ahead, impress us.
PARTIAL BEARD
All partial beard categories including sideburns, goatees, musketeers, and fu manchus. Styling aids are allowed but the emphasis is on grooming, not creativity. PARTIAL FREESTYLE
Creatively styled partial beards belong in this category. Styling aids are allowed and the wackier you can get, the better. Use your imagination.
FULL BEARD 4" AND UNDER Short beards under 4", with emphasis on grooming and presentation. This is the category for new growers and all you white-collar types. Styling aids are not allowed. FULL BEARD STYLED STACHE
Beards of any length are allowed. Hairs beyond 1.5 centimeters past the corner of the upper lip may not be styled. NO styling products are allowed in the beard (this includes hairspray)! FULL BEARD UNDER 8"
Styling aids are NOT allowed for any part of the face. The beard must remain natural.
FULL BEARD OVER 8"
Styling aids are NOT allowed for any part of the face. The beard must remain natural. FULL BEARD FREESTYLE
Our jaw-droppingest category. Styling aids are mandatory. It takes a lot to surprise us, but we know somebody out there is just waiting to blow our minds. Is it you?
WHISKERINA This arts-and-craft category is strictly ladies only. From scrap metal to bacon to fake fur, virtually anything goes.
JUDGES
Our judges represent an assortment of some of competitive bearding's biggest stars. With hundreds of competitions under their combined belts, they've traveled the world and seen it all (or so they think). From world and national champions to well-traveled fellow Californians, you're in good hands with our panel.
The judging criteria is based on health, thickness, color, and length of the facial hair, in addition to how well it enhances the competitor's overall look. Presentation matters, folks. Contestants will be graded on a classic 10-scale, with each judge giving out one 10, one 9.5, and one 9 to their top three picks in every category.

Beards Behind Bars 2 was held a few weeks back at the historic Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield Ohio. The Beardcaster attended this event, where he placed 3rd to Luke Sumpter, 2nd place, and Butch Amos who won the goatee category. The best part of the evening was a tribute beard by Natali Johnston of the Holy City Beard and Mustache Society in the Whiskerina "Natural" category. When the Whiskerinas make "tribute" beards they usually pick an influential person in the bearding community and try to emulate their style, their look, and their facial hair as best as they can. Natali chose to make her tribute to me, The Beardcaster. She did such an amazing job with all the details she included in the tribute. The hair color was spot on and the outfit was on point. I had actually given Natali a microphone and recorder earlier in the afternoon so she could play around and record some silly stuff. Little did I know she was going to use those [pieces to complete her best masterpiece yet! I had planned on getting some crowd interviews at this event, which was presented by Beards Of The Old Northwest and Duck River Beard Co., but I left that to Natali as I felt she would do a fantastic job!
Natali interviewed many people and gave me about 3+ hours of tape to go through! I spent many hours going through the first hour plus and was able to put together this episode. She talked to a few attendants and it was really entertaining to hear her use some of my phrases and for people to tell her what a great job she did replicating my look. She then interviewed all of the judges for the event and asked them all what they were looking for from the contestants that were to be critiqued. I was very honored and proud of the job she did and still can't believe that she picked me to tribute. Be sure to visit www.thebeardcaster.com/blog/72 to see all the photos from the event. I hope you enjoy!

Aaron Left is the public relations officer for the The Moustache and Beard Social Club and owner/operator of AJ's Elixirs. They are about to host the The 7th Annual Northern California Beard And Moustache Competition at the California Automobile Museum in Sacramento on April 21st. We had a great chat about his bearded history and how he was pulled into his first event. We talked a bit about the club and event and we dove into a few of our favorite categories at the event. This competition is a definite must to attend each year as they gather to help their local animal charity, PAWS, and raise funds to help with the adoption and care programs. I hope that you can attend this fun event and show your amazing facial hair off for this great cause! Enjoy my talk with Aaron-he was a blast to talk with about something we both love and try to share with as many people as we can.

They also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, positive behavior training, and good nutrition.
