Talking Catholic episodes

  • Our 200th episode!
It’s our 200th episode! Traditionally, we prefer to do live shows in front of an audience when we hit a new centennial mark, however this year we had to put a halt to that to comply with pandemic guidelines. So instead, we decided to record a Zoom episode with all of our hosts and a few of our favorite guests from the past year. (Not only are we celebrating 200 episodes but we’re also celebrating a belated one year anniversary to our three co-hosts who started on the show on October 9, 2019).
On this week’s podcast, our quartet of hosts - Mike Walsh, Mary McCusker, Kari Janisse, Marianela Nunez - welcomed onto the show:
Kevin Hickey, Executive Director, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden
Donna Ottaviano-Britt, Director, Office of Discipleship & Leadership, Diocese of Camden
Fr. Peter Gallagher, Pontifical North American College
Fr. Joshua Nevitt, Director of Catholic Identity, Holy Spirit High School
Mary Beth Peabody, Communications Manager, Office of Catholic Schools, Diocese of Camden
The nine discussed the evolution of the Talking Catholic show and its expansion into the YouTube universe with several other shows. We also chatted about how all of our guests have transitioned into the on-line universe with great success, as they had to move from in-person to virtual events and communications this year. It’s a great chat this week, very uplifting and provides a lot of tips for those who are looking to make a bigger splash in the on-line world.
This episode is available in both the audio format (everyplace podcasts can be accessed, and in our regular time slots on Domestic Church Radio) but also as a video podcast at youtube.com/talkingcatholic.

  • Talking Saints - Blessed Miguel Pro
Blessed José Ramón Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez, better known as Blessed Miguel Pro, lived a life conformed to Christ, even unto death by firing squad.
In this month’s program, our hosts Laurie Power and Pete Sanchez celebrate the feast of this Jesuit priest, who ministered during the time of Mexico’s persecution of Catholics in the early 20th century.  Undaunted by the Mexican government, he continued bringing the faith to God’s people until he was martyred.  His courage, faith, and final words (“Long live Christ the King!”) are motivating forces for today’s Catholics engaging with a secular culture.

  • Talking Vocations with Fr. Adam Cichoski and Laurie Power
We like chatting about vocations on Talking Catholic, so we brought out the big guns for this episode, Fr. Adam Cichoski, Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Camden, and Laurie Power, our beloved (and multi-award winning) co-host of the Taking Saints podcast, who is a former postulant of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia (aka the Nashville Dominicans). The duo chat with our hosts Mary McCusker and Mike Walsh about their vocation journeys and offer guidance for those discerning a call to the priesthood or religious life. It’s an amazingly joyful and honest conversation about this kind of vocation path.
The Diocese of Camden offers two monthly discernment opportunities. Samuel Group (https://www.camdendiocese.org/samuelgroup) equips young adults with the tools they need to approach vocational discernment with peace, joy and confidence. The other discernment group is specifically for men (16-39) considering the priesthood (https://camdenpriest.org/discernmentgroup).

  • Talking “Fratelli Tutti” with Mike Canaris
On October 3rd, Pope Francis released his third encyclical titled “Fratelli Tutti,” subtitled “On fraternity and social friendship.” This document focuses on the social and economic problems of today’s society; and proposes an ideal world of fraternity in which all countries can be part of a "larger human family.” To shine some much needed light on this document and its creator, we asked noted Catholic Star Herald columnist and professor at Loyola University Chicago’s Institute of Pastoral Studies, Michael Canaris, Ph.D., to help us better understand the encyclical. Our hosts Mary McCusker and Mike Walsh also invited our resident expert in missionary discipleship, Donna Ottaviano-Britt, onto the show to discuss how this global document has relevance to us here in New Jersey. It’s a truly enlightening conversation that helps us to understand the message and the author.

  • Newly Ordained Permanent Deacons
Recently, the Diocese of Camden was blessed with the ordination of 12 men to the permanent diaconate. These family men have spent 6 years in academic and practical study to learn how to assist their bishop, pastors and the laity in proclaiming Jesus’ message through the spiritual life of our church. Our hosts Kari Janisse and Mike Walsh welcomed onto the podcast three of the recently ordained deacons - Joseph Janocha, Tobias Haley, Charles Dillan. It’s a great conversation with three dedicated men who have chosen to listen to God’s call to vocations.

  • Respect Life Month and Domestic Violence
On today’s special episode we address two important October awareness initiatives: Respect Life and Domestic Violence.
Mike Walsh opens the show with a reflection on Respect Life Month, what this resource really means and how important it is for both the Right to Life movement and many social justice enterprises.
Then Mary McCusker and Mike hear from two Catholic Charities staff members who, over the decades, have continually served both victims of domestic violence and perpetrators.  Listen to Sylvia Loumeau, MSW, LCSW who serves as Catholic Charities’ Director of Clinical Services, and Jose Sanchez, Program Director in Catholic Charities in Camden County.  Sylvia and Jose take an in-depth look at the realities of domestic violence:  what exactly it means, the many forms it takes, and the nuances, complexities, and misconceptions surrounding it, especially as domestic violence cases have increased during the pandemic.

If you or anyone you know may be experiencing domestic violence or abuse, there is help.  For additional information on our services or to seek counsel, contact Catholic Charities directly at 866-682-2166 or visit www.catholiccharitiescamden.org/counseling/domestic-violence  for more information and resources.

  • Latino Culture in the U.S.
In this special episode of Talking Catholic, guests Andrés Arango, Director of Hispanic Ministry and Evangelization for the Diocese of Camden and Marianne Zayas, Director of Parish Services for the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception chat with hosts Michael Walsh and Marianela Nuñez about the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration in the U.S. and how Latino Catholics are bringing their gifts to both our faith as well as the American experience. (Of course, Mike is mostly focused on the food, but in all seriousness, there are many nuances of Latino culture that are often misunderstood - starting with, is referring to all hispanics and South American’s as Latino actually accurate. Answer: nope, but you have to listen to find out why!)
Additionally, our listeners are invited to attend the virtual Hispanic Diocesan Mass on October 25th at 3pm - available on Camden Diocese’s YouTube, Facebook and Twitter channels. This Mass is always a great event!

Peter Gallagher of Holy Angels Parish in Woodbury, NJ and soon to be returning to the Pontifical North American College in Rome for a year to finish his graduate studies. Fr. Peter chats with our hosts Kari Janisse and Mike Walsh about what he’ll be focusing on in this final year of education as well as his late-in-life devotion to the rosary. • Dr. Hosffman Ospino
Joining us this week is acclaimed Catholic speaker, author and academic Dr. Hosffman Ospino, Associate Professor of Hispanic Ministry and Religious Education, as well as chair of the Department of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry at Boston College. Dr. Ospino’s research explores the dialogue between faith and culture and the impact of this interchange upon Catholic theological education, catechesis, and ministry. He has served as the principal investigator for several nationally recognized studies on how the Hispanic Catholic presence is transforming parishes, schools and organizations.
Dr. Ospino was also a keynote speaker at the Diocese of Camden’s Convocation of Catholic Leaders in 2018, which is why we asked that event’s executive director, Donna Ottaviano-Britt, on to the show to talk about some of the ways the Convocation has led to the percolating of new ideas in our parishes. The duo give our hosts, Marianela Nunez and Mike Walsh, and our listeners a lot of great information that should provide a roadmap into the future for our parishes.
