  • Update on Catholic Schools Reopening
At the beginning of September, Catholic Schools in South Jersey reopened for five-day a week in person learning, with a virtual option for families who decided to utilize it. To give us an update and insight into how the new school year is moving along, our hosts Marianela Nunez and Mike Walsh welcome Patti Paulson from Holy Angels Regional School in Woodbury, NJ; Joe Cray from Wildwood Catholic Academy, and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bill Watson and Marketing Coordinator Mary Beth Peabody from the Office of Catholic Schools.
The foursome offer a great deal of detail as to how the schools have reopened, their successes, their challenges, and how the Catholic School dynamic is uniquely positioned to offer in-school learning during Covid times.

  • Kevin Hickey, Catholic Charities and Justice for All
Making his triumphant return to the Talking Catholic podcast is Kevin Hickey, executive director of Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Camden. One of our favorite recurring guests, Kevin chats with us this week about the organization’s Justice for All ceremony, this year being held virtually on October 8, 2020.
For 17 years, the South Jersey Catholic Charities agency has held the Justice for All dinner to showcase the great work being done in the region and to raise much needed funds.
The agency is able to serve approximately 24,000 individuals each year, in large part because of funds raised by the Justice for All ceremony.  It is the largest fundraiser held by the agency and all funds raised from the event are used for direct client services.  Since its inception in 2004, it has raised more than 1 million dollars, every penny of which is used to meet the needs of the poorest and the marginalized – families who are homeless or facing homelessness, those with mental health or substance abuse crises, individuals struggling with hardships such as losing their jobs or being forced to choose between paying for food or medications.
The Justice for All event also honors those who have proven a life-long commitment to serving the poor and the vulnerable, highlighting their work and their commitment to charity and social justice. This year, Catholic Charities will bestow five Disciples of Mercy awards on individuals and groups, as well as the Saint John Neumann award to Bishop Dennis Sullivan of the Diocese of Camden for his long-time support of Catholic Charities.
If you would like to watch the event or support the event through sponsorships or by partaking in their on-line auction, go to https://catholiccharitiescamden.org/jfa2020/.

  • Frienemy chat with Donna Ottaviano-Britt
Our host Mike Walsh flies solo this week and since he’s only comfortable talking to the people who challenge him most, he’s invited his colleague and frienemy (friend/enemy) Donna Ottaviano-Britt onto the show to do a deep dive into their spiritual formation and how it gives them a foundation to help bring the Catholic faith to others. Donna is a maven of the lay pastoral side of the Diocese of Camden, as director of the Office of Discipleship and Leadership. Mike barely knows how to spell pastoral, let alone be pastoral, so Donna is one of his closest advisors when it come to developing communication tools to support the pastoral initiatives throughout South Jersey. This week’s show is a very nice deep dive into what makes two very different people tic (and why we should all have people in our lives that may know more than we do on certain topics.)
And make sure you check out Donna’s second season of Joyful Disciples on the Talking Catholic YouTube channel, her new shows premiere every other Thursday: https://www.youtube.com/talkingcatholic

  • Talking Saints - Peter Claver
“Slave to the slaves,” Saint Peter Claver dedicated his life as a Jesuit missionary to bring dignity and love to the thousands of African slaves coming into Colombia’s ports each year, during the 17th century.  As the Catholic Church marks his Feast today, Laurie and Pete unpack this saint’s work and reflect on our call to model a life of sacrifice.

  • Women religious series: Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal (CFRs)
Over the next several months, our hosts Kari Janisse and Mike Walsh will be chatting with members from various women religious communities in South Jersey. For the first of these one-off episodes, we welcome from the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal (aka the CFRs), Sister Ann Kateri, Sister Chiara, and postulant Kate Creel. The trio chat with us about how their community was founded, its charisms, their work in Atlantic City and in their convents in New York, England and Ireland, and how they support the local Samuel Group, a discernment group for young adults, ages 18-39, who meet together once a month from September through May in order to study, pray, and discover their individual vocations or lifetime call from God. The purpose of the program is to equip young adults with the tools they need to approach vocational discernment with peace, joy and confidence. The CFRs are always great guests (Mike think this is their 5th appearance on the podcast) and will give your soul a joyful boost.

  • Election 2020 - Civilize It
Election season often brings with it a lot of hostility – among our friends, co-workers, acquaintances, family members, and of course strangers on the internet. Since we’re directly between the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention, we invited Matt Davis from the Diocese of Camden’s Office of Life and Justice to join us this week to chat about the civil discourse initiative from the USCCB called Civilize It. It’s a program that reminds us how we can, and should, be able to engage in spirited political debate and dialogue without it devolving into personal attacks and hateful rhetoric. Our hosts Mary McCusker and Mike Walsh also chat with him about how Catholics can embrace faithful citizenship, so that we can wisely bring our faith into the voting booth (or as we sit down to fill out a mail-in ballot).

  • Summer in the City 2020 #Virtual
Each year the Camden Diocese hosts a week-long overnight retreat for young people organized by the Office of Youth, Young Adults and Campus Ministry. In a normal year, Summer in the City would involve dozens of teenagers taking part in opportunities for service in places like soup kitchens and senior centers as well as prayer throughout the day as they focus on the four pillars of the program: Service, Community, Social Justice & Spirituality. However, this year Summer in the City has gone virtual, like many other elements of our normal lives. Hosts Mary McCusker and Mike Walsh chat with Office Director Jose Rodriguez and SITC junior advisor Cristina Velazquez about why Summer in the City is such a great experience for young people and how they plan to try and replicate it this year.

  • Reopening Catholic schools safely
For school parents across the country the questions they’ve been asking most are: 1) will schools reopen for in-class education and 2) if so, how will it be done safely? The answers to those very questions have been the primary focus of the Diocese of Camden’s Office of Catholic Schools all summer. Recently, they released a FAQ on the process (https://catholicstarherald.org/questions-and-answers-about-the-2020-21-school-year/) that schools have followed to make possible safe in-person education. To add more depth about the roadmap that South Jersey Catholic Schools are following, we welcome Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bill Watson and Communication and Marketing Manager Mary Beth Peabody to the show. Our hosts Marianela Nunez and Mike Walsh pepper the duo with these questions and more on behalf of Catholic schools parents. It’s a great conversation that results in a lot of answers about logistics and procedures, as well as what research informed them.

  • Talking Saints - Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
Philosopher. Author. Jewish turned Agnostic turned Carmelite. Breslau, Germany-born Edith Stein, or Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, was all of these, before being martyred at the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz.  Today, as the Catholic Church remembers her feast day, Laurie and Pete discuss the conversion of this 20th century holy woman, her longing for truth, and witness in a godless world.
