When a disaster or crisis strikes, such as this pandemic, nonprofits and social service agencies need to quickly adapt to the circumstances, laws, and a number of other factors to continue to serve populations. This week, we hear from Kevin Hickey, Executive Director of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden, and a member of the Catholic Charities USA Board of Trustees. • Holy Week and the Triduum with Fr. John Rossi
Just after Ash Wednesday we invited Fr. John Rossi, administrator of Saint Bridget University Parish (https://www.stbridgetup.org) in Glassboro, NJ to give us some tips for Lent. At the time we said we would have to have him back to talk about Holy Week & the Triduum, and so we have! Of course, the world has changed a bit in the intervening weeks, so Kari Janisse and Mike Walsh also talk with Fr. Rossi about the work he’s being doing in his parish to make sure the spiritual life of the parish is maintained, even as we follow social distancing guidelines and accept the cancellation of in-person, public Masses throughout New Jersey. It’s another great interview with Fr. Rossi, filled with great spiritual and practical tips.

  • Social Distancing – The Coronavirus Special
Like the rest of the world, our podcast isn’t immune to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. But, also like the rest of the world, we will soldier on in new and different ways. So this week, via Zoom teleconferencing software, Mike Walsh grabs a few of his favorite co-hosts and guests for long conversation about how they’re handling the required social distancing. Joining him this week are Talking Catholic YouTube Channel hosts Kari Janisse, Star Martinez, Donna Ottaviano-Britt and Lex Keefer, Compartiendo Tu Don YouTube Channel host Marianela Nunez, and Director of Parish Nursing for VITALIty Catholic Healthcare Services, Nicole Keefer, RN.
And, since we have so many YouTubers on the show, we’re posting the full video of the interview on-line at https://www.youtube.com/TalkingCatholic
[Producer Note: please excuse the sound quality of these kinds of teleconferencing interviews. Zoom is great, but since we’re all recording in our own homes, some of the sounds of our daily lives bleed through. Put the content remains top quality!]

  • Talking Saints - Katharine Drexel
Laurie Power and Pete Sanchez are back for another Talking Saints episode.
“Miss Drexel Enters a Catholic Convent- Gives Up Seven Million.” This was the 1889 headline in the Philadelphia Public Ledger, after Philadelphia native and heiress Katharine Drexel decided to enter the Sisters of Mercy convent in Pittsburgh. On this month’s Talking Saints, our hosts unpack the story of a woman who gave up material wealth for spiritual treasure, and founded schools and missions to educate Native Americans and African Americans- a path that led her to sainthood and even more headlines.
Saint Katharine Drexel, Patroness of Racial Justice and Philanthropists, pray for us!

  • Cindy LeBron
If there’s anyone who can speak about the harsh (and surprising) reality of homelessness in Southern New Jersey, it’s our guest this week: Cynthia Lebron, Housing Stability Director at Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden, who has been faithfully working with homeless populations for the past 21 years.  In this episode, Cynthia chats with hosts Mary McCusker and Mike Walsh about the many forms of homelessness, the reasons that people become homeless, how families survive without a roof over their heads, and on a lighter note - how they are able to overcome it through the assistance of Cynthia and her staff at Catholic Charities. Give it a listen!

  • Talking Saints - Francisco and Jacinta Marto
It's time to Talk Saints with Laurie Power and Pete Sanchez!
On the thirteenth day of May 1917, a “woman all in white, more brilliant than the sun” first appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal.  For the next five months, the Blessed Mother continued to visit the three youth- Francisco and Jacinta Marto and their cousin, Lucia dos Santos- and shared her message of the Rosary and prayer to bring peace to the world.
As the Catholic Church marks the feast of Saints Francisco and Jacinta Marto today, our hosts reflect on the lives of these humble servants of God, and how Our Lady of Fatima’s message to them is still relevant to society today, more than 100 years later.
