  • Catholic Schools Legislative Advocacy
This week we’re talking Catholic Schools legislative advocacy with the Diocese of Camden’s Dr. Bill Watson, Superintendent of Schools and Sr. Rose Difluri, Assistant Superintendent, who chat about how state funds affect nonpublic schools but more importantly, Catholic School families. Dr. Watson and Sr. Rose discuss with hosts Marianela Nuñez and Mike Walsh the importance of advocacy work and the responsibility of all Catholics to extend their support with these efforts - to help nonpublic school children have access to the state funds available to enrich their educational experience.

On this episode you’ll hear us talk a lot about the New Jersey Catholic Conference, whose role it is to work with New Jersey legislators and the Governor’s Office in support of both Catholic Schools and other legislative concerns affecting the Catholic Church in general. To help advocate for our schools, we encourage you to go the NJCC’s voter voice page: https://njcatholic.org/faith-in-action.

Our hosts Kari Janisse and Mike Walsh chat with the trio about how the campus ministry helps students maintain their faith, how the ministry interacts with students, and why college students should make an effort to join a campus ministry or Newman House/Club (which can be found on almost every college campus in the United States.)

  • Rod Herrera - Child & Youth Protection
Returning for a follow-up chat (a mere 150 episodes after his first visit) is Rod Herrera, director of the Office of Child and Youth Protection for the Diocese of Camden. He has one of the most important jobs in the diocese, making sure that the young people who attend our parishes, schools and ministries do so in safe environments. Rod talks with Mary McCusker and Mike Walsh about the VIRTUS training that all clergy, staff and volunteers must undergo before working with young people and everything the dioceses of the United States have done since the USCCB’s 2002 Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People was promulgated in response to the clergy sex use crisis.

  • Talking Saints - Marianne Cope
    It's a Talking Saints episode!
At a time when little could be done for those suffering from leprosy, Marianne Cope showed the highest love, courage and enthusiasm.  She is a shining and energetic example of the best of the tradition of Catholic nursing sisters.”  These were the words of Pope Benedict XVI, during Saint Marianne Cope’s 2012 canonization.  On today’s installment of Talking Saints, hosts Laurie and Pete break open the life of this 19th and 20th century Sister of Saint Francis, a trailblazer in the fight for equal treatment and dignity for all throughout a lifetime of caring for the sick.  Saint Marianne Cope, patron saint of lepers and outcasts, pray for us!

  • Andy Zmuda
This week, Mary McCusker and Mike Walsh recorded the first podcast of 2020 with a guest who is an expert in many fields, including avoiding any kind of spotlight (until now!): Dr. Andy Zmuda, Director of Program Operations & Integration, and the Asset Development Director at Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden.  As someone who has been with the agency for 15 years and currently oversees all programs and staff at Catholic Charities, he has many unique and fascinating perspectives and insights to social work and how it intersects with Catholic faith.
In this podcast, he also dives into the ins and outs of Asset Development - an area of social work that is not talked about frequently, but is essential towards guiding the poor and vulnerable towards financial stability and self-sufficiency. Give it a listen!

    Happy New Year, listeners!
For the last few months Talking Catholic has been working on a new project, a YouTube series of spiritually focused shows. It began in the Fall with our Spanish-language show "Compartiendo Tu Don."
Joining Mike Wash on today’s podcast are several of the hosts, including:
    - Kari Janisse of "Youth Ministry Insights"

Unable to make the podcast was host Alexis Keefer of "Changing With The Tides" but we’ll get her on soon!
(For the first time we recorded our audio podcast episode completely remotely, with all the participants in different venues, so please forgive us if the sound isn't perfect.)
Each of our hosts are creating 12 episodes that will roll out over the first six months of 2020. The shows be focused on youth ministry, missionary discipleship, vocations, young adult spirituality, and embracing difficulty.
We’re very excited about this new venture. If successful, we hope to bring even more show topics to the Talking Catholic YouTube channel!
