The New Year was ushered in with another full round of Premier League action.

After their 4-2 win at Brighton, Arsenal went seven points clear as Manchester City were held by Everton earlier in the day.

It was a happy end to 2022 for Manchester United, as they moved into the top four with a slender victory at Wolves before sides around them Newcastle and Tottenham dropped points.

Chelsea were held to a draw at Nottingham Forest, while problems continue to mount for Southampton and West Ham. The boys sit down to discuss all the New Year action.

The 2022/23 Premier League season resumed in style with seven Boxing Day matches producing a total of 25 goals following a six-week break for the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Leaders Arsenal continued their good form with a 3-1 turnaround win over West Ham United, the only home victory of the day.

It was the only home victory of Boxing Day and meant for the first time in seven years every match of a seven-fixture matchday featured three or more goals. On the 27th normal service was resumed with comfortable home wins for both Chelsea and Manchester United.

Lionel Messi finally achieved his World Cup dream as Argentina won their third crown on penalties following one of the greatest finals in the tournament's history at Lusail Stadium.

Argentina won the shootout 4-2 after a spectacular game which developed into the much-anticipated confrontation between the 35-year-old maestro Messi and his France opposite number Kylian Mbappe, who scored a hat-trick - the first in a World Cup final since 1966 - but still ended up on the losing side.

Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden capitalised on their starting roles to help England eliminate Wales from the World Cup with a 3-0 win which also secured top spot in Group B with 7 points and set up a last-16 tie with Senegal.

England boss Gareth Southgate had been grilled since the disappointing goalless draw with USA and once again, as against Iran, made several big calls and they came up trumps. Marcus Rashford, selected ahead of Raheem Sterling, scored goals one and three and started the move for goal two. Phil Foden scored and won the free-kick that ultimately broke the deadlock.

England got their World Cup off to the perfect start with a dominating victory over Iran in Group B. Arsenal star Bukayo Saka scored twice as the Three Lions strolled to win at the Khalifa International Stadium. Jude Bellingham and Raheem Sterling also on target as were substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish.

This was England's biggest win in the opening game of a major tournament and only the second time in competitive tournament history England have scored six.

Arsenal reclaimed top spot with a 1-0 win against Chelsea away from home. But Manchester City kept within two points after a late 2-1 victory over Fulham.
