  • Simulation Sessions: Augmented Reality To Improve Pediatric Septic Shock Care
Augmented Reality (AR) is a revolutionary advancement in medicine that provides healthcare professionals an interactive experience with superimposed digital media in the real environment. As we better understand the ways AR can enhance the care we provide our patients or the training we offer our healthcare professionals, simulation can lead the way. In this episode, Dr. Regina Toto, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, shares her work developing and testing PediSepsisAR, a first of its kind augmented reality app that can measure the volume and timing of fluid administration during the resuscitation of a pediatric patient in septic shock.

  • In A Heartbeat: The Keys to Detecting Congenital Heart Disease in Newborns
It's National Heart Health Awareness Month! Congenital heart defects are the most common birth defect among the kids that we care for, and perhaps contribute to some of the most fear inducing moments in the newborn nursery. The good news is that many congenital heart lesions are treatable with very good outcomes, if detected and treated early by cardiac specialists. Join our Kid Expert Dr. Christine Hills, pediatric cardiologist, as she discusses our ability to detect congenital heart defects on fetal ultrasound, and how we can detect them postnatally through pulse oximetry screening if they are not picked up prenatally. She also shares with us some practical strategies for initial management of newborns with heart disease in the first few days and weeks while they await cardiology intervention or follow up.

  • Sim Sessions With Samreen: Caregivers of Kids With Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome
How can we best partner with patients and families to make sure they are comfortable taking their kids home from the hospital, particularly after a long or complicated stay? Simulation may be the answer. On this Simulation Sessions with Dr. Samreen Vora, listen as she interviews two of our Kid Experts at Children's Minnesota about the innovative curriculum they developed using simulation to support families going home with children with congenital cardiac problems. Follow along on this journey highlighting examples of success to think about how you might adapt similar models for your practice with patients and families with complex medical needs.

  • Addressing Child and Adolescent Suicidality and Self-Harm
As those of us in clinical practice know, we have seen soaring rates of mental health challenges among children, adolescents and their families during the course of the COVID pandemic, exacerbating the already tenuous situation that existed for child and adolescent mental health. We have seen rates of childhood mental health concerns and suicide rise steadily over the last decade. Across the country, we have seen dramatic increases in ED visits for acute mental health emergencies, including suspected suicide attempts. Here to talk to use today about these increasing mental health challenges, and provide us with some strategies for addressing and preventing suicidality in primary care, is child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Joshua Stein.

  • Big Impact On Little Brains: How Childhood Development Has Been Impacted By The COVID Pandemic
Almost two years into the COVID pandemic, and so much has changed for kids. For some of our young patients, they can't remember a time without masks, social distancing and life online. What impact has this "new normal" had on kids, particularly those whose worldview and social interactions have been shaped primarily by the pandemic? Join our conversation with Kathy Hoogerhyde, student support psychologist, as we discuss how the social and emotional development of kids have been impacted by repeated quarantines, social distance guidelines and a lack of typical group social interactions. Learn about factors that impact childhood resiliency, the social developmental tasks that have been impacted for some of our youngest patients and the lack of coping strategies that are becoming more and more apparent in school-aged kids. Most importantly, we will discuss strategies for supporting kids during this unprecedented time.
