  • Crack the Case: Cutaneous Drug Reactions, Their Mimics, and the Escape from "Allergy Jail"
All providers are familiar with long, dubious allergy lists pointing to a rash around the time a medication was taken. Given the endless list of competing causes for rash, misattribution to medications is wildly common as many studies by pharmacists have shown. The result is “allergy jail”, where angry pop ups limit our treatment options, impact antibiotic stewardship, and often follow a child into adulthood. This week's case will investigate principles to correctly identify when rashes and other associated symptoms are (and more frequently are not) attributable to a medication taken.

  • Simulation Sessions: Simulation for Medication Safety
Using simulation for testing processes and systems enhances patient safety. In healthcare, there is constantly advancing technology and having a nimble way to keep up but maintain quality and patient safety is critical. Simulating parts of the design and implementation of a new process can not only keep our patients safer but can also help save money. Discovering gaps and making changes prior to implementation. Today we are speaking with Amy Gisslen, Medication Safety Pharmacist, on the implementation of a new medication safety software and Heidi Shafland, Clinical Nurse Specialist about improving the process of administering total parental nutrition (TPN) and Lipids.
