  • Bringing home baby: Safely Reuniting NICU Babies and Their Families Sooner Using An Innovative Home Monitoring Program
Preterm birth affects approximately 1 of every 10 infants born in the United States, and almost all of those infants will end up spending time in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or NICU. For many, this involves several days of infants receiving care in a hospital, with parents unable to take their babies home, disrupting their family and work life. Often the first question families ask their NICU care teams is, “When can I go home?” Recently, Children’s Minnesota launched the Children’s Home Application-based Monitoring Program, which is a one of it’s kind program in Minnesota that allows infants that qualify to receive expert care and monitoring by the baby’s neonatal care time at home, with overwhelmingly positive results. Here to discuss that program is Dr. Cristina Miller, one of our kid experts in neonatology and the medical director of the NICU follow up program.

  • Putting Kids First: Investing In Pediatric Mental Health Care
It’s no secret that we are facing a mental health crisis among our pediatric patients. Kids and teenagers have higher rates of depression and anxiety than ever before, and suicide has now become the second leading cause of death for adolescents. More and more of our patients and families are seeking mental health care support and services, and we have an unfortunate shortage of pediatric and adolescent mental health specialists to fill the need. This has resulted in kids showing up in clinics and emergency departments in crisis, and sometimes spending days to weeks sitting in a hospital awaiting specialized inpatient mental health care. There appears to be no easy fix for this issue, but here to talk to us today about the landscape of pediatric and adolescent mental health care and some steps that Children’s Minnesota is taking to help with gaps in care is Jamie Winter RN, MBA, director of mental health services.

On today's Talking Pediatrics, our Kid Expert from the Sleep Clinic, Dr. Ben Ryba-White, joins us to talk about the importance of sleep, the mysteries of melatonin and what we can be doing in the primary care office to help improve the sleep habits of our young patients.

  • In the Weeds: What You Need to Know About Teens and Cannabis
Marijuana and cannabis are all over the news these days. Legalization of THC products has occurred in many states across the country, and while the goal is to decriminalize a substance with history disproportionately putting people of color in prison, the end result is that cannabis products of all kinds are more widely available and can more easily end up reaching our adolescent patients. Join this conversation with Dr. Sara Polley, a triple-board certified physician and psychiatrist and the medical director at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation's national substance use and mental health treatment center for adolescents and young adults, to learn about what products teenagers are using, how to effectively screen for use and most importantly, what we know about how using THC impacts the brains of teenagers in much different ways than adults.

  • Crack The Case: Hepatitis, Adenovirus, and a Boy with Yellow Eyes
A mysterious wave of acute hepatitis in children is currently under investigation spanning 43 states as well as international borders. These cases are unique in that typical causes for liver injury such as viral Hepatitis A-E have not been found. Though the causal pathway for liver injury is unknown, association with a certain virus of cold-causing daycare fame has been demonstrated in more than half of patients: adenovirus, particularly F type 41. Worldwide most children have fully recovered though around 10% have needed liver transplants and the vast majority have been hospitalized. Today’s case explores a 4-year-old who presented to our clinic with scleral icterus and hepatomegaly.

On this episode of Talking Pediatrics, we talk about hair and health, and not in the ways you might expect. Health Equity manager and Kid Expert Adriene Thornton interviews nurse Courtney Kenefick on what hair symbolizes in black culture, why hair is so important to black culture and why knowing this history and importance can help us take better care of our patients and decrease health disparities. From examining our policies around ethnic hair, to checking our supply shelves for appropriate hair care products, little steps can go a long way in creating a more inclusive care experience for our patients.
