In the fifth episode of Talking Public Sector, Karen Taylor, Director of the Deloitte Centre for Health Solutions discusses the Centre’s latest healthcare report, ‘Realising digital-first primary care’ with Dr Arvind Madan, co-founder of eConsult and Deloitte’s senior advisor and primary care lead and Clare Morrison, National ‘Near Me’ lead at the Scottish Government.

During this episode, Karen discusses with Arvind and Clare the relevant findings from Deloitte’s February 2020 report, the challenges facing primary care, and their first-hand experience in establishing and rolling out digital platform solutions. They also discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated, exponentially, the adoption of virtual and video consultations and what this means for the wider adoption of digital technologies and the future of primary care.

In the third episode of Talking Public Sector, we discuss our latest healthcare report; “Shaping the future of UK healthcare – Closing the digital gap” with Breid O’Brien, Director of Digital Transformation at the Health Innovation Network and Karen Taylor, Lead for the Deloitte Centre for Health Solutions.

Breid O’Brien is the Director of Digital Transformation at the Health Innovation Network which is one of fifteen Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs) across England. AHSNs operate as the key innovation arm of the NHS. Breid has an extensive healthcare background spanning the NHS, the UK private sector and the Australian healthcare system. With a background as a Registered Nurse specialising in Emergency care, she has since held senior operational management roles in acute healthcare organisations, before moving to system level roles for the NHS in London in both strategy and healthcare informatics.

Karen Taylor leads Deloitte’s Centre for Health Solutions. Karen supports the Healthcare and Life Sciences practice by driving independent and objective business research and analysis into key industry challenges and associated solutions; generating evidence based insights and points of view on issues from pharmaceuticals and technology innovation to healthcare management and reform. Karen also produces a weekly blog on topical issues facing the healthcare and life science industries.

During this episode, Breid and Karen discuss the challenges facing the healthcare system in realising the policy ambition of a digital first NHS, and some of the solutions to overcome them.

In the second episode of Talking Public Sector, we discuss leadership in times of crisis, personal resilience and the importance of effective communication with Sir Mark Rowley.

Sir Mark is best known for leading the UK’s counter terrorism policing for four years during which his team prevented 27 terrorist plots and lead national responses to the five attacks in 2017. He joined the Met police as Assistant Commissioner in 2011 where he transformed approaches to gangs and public order, lead Scotland Yard’s combating of organised crime and ran major operations including policing for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Before that, he was Chief Constable of Surrey where he oversaw massive reductions in serious crimes and highest levels of public confidence in the country.

James is a Partner in the Monitor Deloitte strategy practice, and leads Deloitte’s overall Home Affairs Team. James has worked extensively with the Home Office, Ministry of Justice and UK police forces.

During this episode, James and Sir Mark discuss the challenges of coping with the pressures of leadership, the importance of vision and effective communication.

Sir Howard joined Manchester City Council in 1971 as a junior clerk and rose though its ranks to become chief executive, serving a total of 46 years for the city. During that time, he became well-known as one of the chief architects of Manchester’s resurgence.

Rebecca George OBE leads Deloitte’s work with government and public services clients across the UK. She has worked extensively with central government departments such as HM Treasury, the Cabinet Office and the Department of Health and Social Care as well as the broader NHS.
