Nearly our entire focus up to this point has been on Mitch Brailsford. And for good reason. He was the one to pull the trigger ending Daniel Shaver’s life.

But what if there was another individual who may indeed hold more culpability for what happened on the night of January 18, 2016? An individual who was in charge of the scene from the very beginning. An individual who gave incoherent orders and authorized the use of lethal force. And an individual who conveniently took early retirement from the Mesa PD and then moved his family to the Philippines.

This chapter is about that individual. Sergeant Charles Langley.

Daniel Shaver lies face down in a hotel hallway in Mesa, Arizona. A cop barks incoherent orders at him and repeatedly denies any clarifying questions. The cop's demands become increasingly convoluted. “Cross your legs…Keep them crossed…Put your arms in front of you…Push yourself up…Do not uncross your legs…Keep your hands in the air.”

And then...the most confounding instruction of all. “Crawl…But don’t use your hands…And if you’re going to fall, don’t stop yourself…Fall on your face.”

What does this mean? How can you crawl without your hands? What would you do?

Part 1-of-8 from the series “The Execution of Daniel Shaver”.

Daniel Shaver (26) lived in Texas with his wife and high school sweetheart, Laney (24), and their two young children, Natalie (7) and Emery (3). Laney had just become pregnant as a surrogate for their close friends and Daniel was working hard to support his family.

Daniel worked as a pest exterminator for big box retail stores and one area he serviced often was located in Mesa, Arizona. His company would put him up in a hotel for the night when he traveled there. He was staying in a “La Quinta Inn” hotel on the night of January 18, 2016, and in all regards, it seemed like a routine work trip. One he had made dozens of times before.

Though on that particular night, a series of unfortunate events led to the police being called, and Daniel was held at gunpoint by the Mesa Police Department. The ensuing 5-minute video from the body camera of officer Philip “Mitch” Brailsford records the entire baffling interaction. It is often cited as the most disturbing police shooting ever recorded. This is the story of the execution of Daniel Shaver.

A bookkeeping note.

"I thought the anthology season was Season 5? ...But now the Daniel Shaver story is Season 5? What happened?"

I originally planned this case to take one episode. But over the past months, the story has grown to an unwieldy length. It finally reached a point where I would be doing a disservice to everyone to try and tell it in a single episode.

That's the long way of saying that the anthology season is still alive and well. It has just been retitled: Season X.
