Part 5-of-8 from the series “The Execution of Daniel Shaver”.

Nearly our entire focus up to this point has been on Mitch Brailsford. And for good reason. He was the one to pull the trigger ending Daniel Shaver’s life.

But what if there was another individual who may indeed hold more culpability for what happened on the night of January 18, 2016? An individual who was in charge of the scene from the very beginning. An individual who gave incoherent orders and authorized the use of lethal force. And an individual who conveniently took early retirement from the Mesa PD and then moved his family to the Philippines.

This chapter is about that individual. Sergeant Charles Langley.

Part 2-of-8 from the series “The Execution of Daniel Shaver”.

Daniel Shaver lies face down in a hotel hallway in Mesa, Arizona. A cop barks incoherent orders at him and repeatedly denies any clarifying questions. The cop's demands become increasingly convoluted. “Cross your legs…Keep them crossed…Put your arms in front of you…Push yourself up…Do not uncross your legs…Keep your hands in the air.”

And then...the most confounding instruction of all. “Crawl…But don’t use your hands…And if you’re going to fall, don’t stop yourself…Fall on your face.”

What does this mean? How can you crawl without your hands? What would you do?

Part 1-of-8 from the series “The Execution of Daniel Shaver”.

Daniel Shaver (26) lived in Texas with his wife and high school sweetheart, Laney (24), and their two young children, Natalie (7) and Emery (3). Laney had just become pregnant as a surrogate for their close friends and Daniel was working hard to support his family.

Daniel worked as a pest exterminator for big box retail stores and one area he serviced often was located in Mesa, Arizona. His company would put him up in a hotel for the night when he traveled there. He was staying in a “La Quinta Inn” hotel on the night of January 18, 2016, and in all regards, it seemed like a routine work trip. One he had made dozens of times before.

Though on that particular night, a series of unfortunate events led to the police being called, and Daniel was held at gunpoint by the Mesa Police Department. The ensuing 5-minute video from the body camera of officer Philip “Mitch” Brailsford records the entire baffling interaction. It is often cited as the most disturbing police shooting ever recorded. This is the story of the execution of Daniel Shaver.

A bookkeeping note.

"I thought the anthology season was Season 5? ...But now the Daniel Shaver story is Season 5? What happened?"

I originally planned this case to take one episode. But over the past months, the story has grown to an unwieldy length. It finally reached a point where I would be doing a disservice to everyone to try and tell it in a single episode.

That's the long way of saying that the anthology season is still alive and well. It has just been retitled: Season X.

You can find it on Patreon and tapesfromthedarkside.com under the Season X tab. On other podcast apps, it will be an listed as Season 6 (for now).

We'll be adding to the 1-case / 1-episode format down the road.

"That's So Fucked Up" is a podcast about cults, murder, and other generally fucked up stuff. Hosts Ashley Richards and Michelle Mosher bring you enthralling yet horrifying stories while looking at their possible causes. Join the gals as they discuss what inspires people to do the awful things that they do. Nature? Nurture? Society? Let's investigate from our couches together! New episodes every Fucked Up Friday!

Ash and Michelle also have a bi-weekly segment called ‘Binge or Bust?’ where Ash breaks down a doc for Michelle, since she loves watching them, but watching docs alone gives Michelle anxiety.

And Ashley just released a spin-off series as well, “That’s So Fucked Up Presents”, a show where she explores a different location or topic over the course of each month. The first season is on four of Colorado’s most notorious murders and is called Colorado Carnage.

Make sure to check out my episode where I tell Ashley about the Dylan Redwine murder, wherever you listen to podcasts, at https://pod.link/1508752329/episode/da39a2bd235892be4638cf72847dea03

I have a fascination with grizzly bear stories. I’ve seen the documentary “Grizzly Man” about a dozen times.

Same goes for “The Revenant” (...the grizzly scene; if you know, you know).

So when I found out that the podcast WHAT WAS THAT LIKE had done a story about a man who was attacked by a grizzly bear, I knew I had to check it out.

I was not disappointed.

I’m so excited to share this full episode with you today. Please subscribe to WHAT WAS THAT LIKE available on all pod-players including spotify.

Check out the show notes for more info about Dan’s story and some pictures of him and his family.

Part 5 of 5.

After 60 years of relative silence, two competing theories emerge in this Austrailian-mystery-of-the-century.

One; an obscure sex drug. The other; a noxious gas. Which one do you find most plausible?
