Tapestry

Welcome to Episode 34 of Tapestry. Today I chat with Kyle Schaefer, the man behind progressive metal project Archaeologist, discussing topics like his latest epic two-part track Winter’s Wake (and the inspiration behind it), transitioning from a solo project into a full-band and back again, and the importance of working with what you have at any step in your creative process. Plus—the lore behind his calling card - including a Cheez-It with all his merch.

Welcome to Episode 33 of Tapestry, where today I chat with Greg Marquis, the vocalist of Boston-based post-hardcore band, Actor Observer. Our conversation is a heartfelt discussion of tons of things, including the difficulty of being authentic in your emotions as a performer without pushing away more vulnerable people at shows, how his classical vocal training ended up putting shackles on the idea of a “right” and “wrong” way to sing, and how rising rent costs in his Boston community galvanized him and other members of his band to take action in local politics and protect the creative people and places in his local scene.

Welcome to Episode 32 of Tapestry. Today’s guest is Catie Gutierrez, also known as Eu4ic, a trip-hop and dance composer living around the San Francisco Bay Area. We muse on how her love of animation and video games as a young girl gave way to a path of combining technology and curiosity to create her music, her experiences pioneering a space for women in the electronic music scene, and on how current trends in the pop music world reflect our nostalgic sensibilities.

Welcome to Episode 31 of Tapestry, where today Matt and Jordan of the cross-country melodic death metal/black metal outfit Iapetus talked with me about their all-star resume of producers and collaborators, adopting a sense of realism about how people consume music and making art for art’s sake, and how their new release touches on the importance of human element in presenting philosophy and science in any medium.

Bonjour! Welcome to Episode 30 of Tapestry. Today's guest is a French progressive metal musician, Lola Damblant-Soler. She released a solo album under her recording name, Soledad, which we discuss at length, aside other topics like writing music about painful and traumatic events in her life, the struggles of assembling a live band, and insight about being a music student and engaging in the music scene in France.

Welcome to Episode 29 of Tapestry, where today you’ll get to hear me chat with every member of the Columbus, Ohio-based hard rock quintet Faith in Failure. We muse over a handful of subject matter, but mostly ended up focusing on topics plaguing local bands today, including the importance of professionalism, “faking it till you make it,” and how oversaturation and the bygone appeal of seeing people perform actual instruments for you live has changed the local music landscape.

Welcome to Episode 28 of Tapestry. Today’s guest is Roger Romero, who is a Pittsburgh-based saxophonist and the effective ‘frontman’ of his jazz and rock fusion project, Feralcat. Roger absolutely humbled me with his opinions on so many topics, but if I had to pick just three to reel you in…. consider our conversation about the lofty weight of holding the title of “Jazz musician,” emboldened by Pittsburgh’s lengthy history of jazz culture; his defense of video games as a legitimate art, and how they have inspired his present work; plus how his background in a multitude of careers has given him non-traditional skills useful for navigating life as a professional musician, while directing him toward that very same career.

Welcome to Episode 27 of Tapestry. Today’s guests are the wonderful gentlemen from The Tea Club, a progressive rock band from New Jersey. We delved into topics such as the reasons behind their departure in style, from bombastic progressive rock to a more delicate and emotional offering on their latest album If/When, how most of the band has been touched in some way by video game music, and the role of and importance of fans in an organic artistic community.

Welcome to Episode 26 of Tapestry! If you’re new to the show, thanks for checking it out. If you’re a storied listener, I hope you enjoy another interview.

Today I had an on-the-road chat with Nick Lee and John Carbone, guitarist and vocalist, respectively, of Long Island-based “aggressive progressive” band Moon Tooth. They’re self-professed multiple-time World’s Sexiest Man nominees and legally, NOT werewolves… with lots of stories to tell.

We go into detail about the conceptual link between their two albums, Chromaparagon, and Crux, and the changes that take place in the studio after an album gets written. Plus, stay tuned to find out which author John has paid homage to in a Moon Tooth song.

Welcome to Episode 25 of Tapestry, where I had the great honor to chat with Ben and Tom, two of seven of the progressive phenoms Thank You Scientist. If you haven't heard of this group, you will love them if you enjoy forward-thinking jazz fusion mixed with progressive, poppy sing-along tunes.

Ben and Tom answered all my questions about being professional musicians, life on the road, drawing inspiration from some close calls, and some of their recent experiences during the Terraformer release cycle, including filming a music video with a professional drum corps.
