From pop stars and politicians to “tradwives” and cable‑news darlings, Butler unpacks how women are put at the center of the frame while their actual voices, power, and pain are erased, ridiculed, or weaponized against them.
Allison Butler is a Senior Lecturer and Director of the Media Literacy Certificate Program in the Department of Communication at UMass Amherst, co‑director of the grassroots organization Mass Media Literacy, and an author of multiple books and resources on critical media literacy and surveillance in schools. Her work is about giving ordinary people — especially young people — the skills to read the media that’s reading them, and to recognize when “representation” is really just another way to keep power where it’s always been.
