This week on The Final Word, Frances and Angela unravel the tangled mess that is Trump’s tariff “strategy”—a term we use loosely, because “strategy” implies some semblance of planning. China, channeling Maya Angelou’s wisdom, has decided to believe Trump the first time and raised tariffs on all U.S. imports to a staggering 84%. It’s less “trade war” and more “trade apocalypse.”

Meanwhile, House Republicans continue their “kiss the ring” tour, blocking a Democratic attempt to force a vote on repealing Trump’s tariffs. Because apparently, loyalty to chaos is the new party platform.

But wait, there’s more! The Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court for permission to fire two independent regulators without cause—because who needs checks and balances when you can have unchecked power? And, in a move that’s equal parts petty and alarming, they’ve also asked the Justice Department to open investigations into perceived enemies Miles Taylor and Chris Krebs. Democracy, we hardly knew you.

And somehow, despite all of this, Trump still boasts a 41% approval rating. Yes, really. We’re as baffled as you are.
