April 21, 2023 Tatami Talk Podcast Episode 077 - Getting a Black Belt without actually training Judo
Correction on this episode, we mentioned Ireland, but it should be
Northern Ireland which is part of the UK.
On episode 77 of Tatami Talk. We start off talking about the American
Judo Systems upcoming tournament on June 4th named "SUMMER SLAM". How
this tournament is for USA Judo points, as well as the interesting
prizes for the youth division and senior elite division. Then we go into
some viewer question/feedback. With the first two part questions being.
Are the federation dues for USA Judo, USJF and USJF too high? And is it
harming Judo's growth in the US? The second part of the question was
would a discount or reward program help grow Judo? Like discounts on
tickets for hotels and flights as well as stores and restaurants. Could
this help grow and bring people to Judo. Like what they do in other
countries? The other two part question was can someone be promoted to
Black Belt or get promotions in general just for being a class assistant
and not practicing themselves or going to tournaments. With the further
question of can someone that doesn't step on the mat and only does
office or volunteer work be promoted to Black Belt? This is a very
interesting question and you may be surprised by our answers.

On episode 76 of Tatami Talk. We open up with an update on the
separation of USA Judo, USJA and USJF agreement. With one tournament
going forward as a USA Judo tournament but inviting USJA and USJF
members to participate. Upon signing a participation release. Then go on
to a hot button topic of a move practiced in BJJ and is it dangerous.
The moving question is the Leo Vieira back take. Some of you may or may
not know about the situation that happened. We are not here to discuss
the situation that happened. We are only trying to discuss is it and can
the move be dangerous to the head and neck. Which leads us into our
final topic of the IJF finally putting out their coaches and ref clinic
video for this year. Clarifying the rules for the upcoming year leading
up to the Olympics. Which oddly enough wasn't on the IJF YouTube
Channel, but on the EJU YouTube Channel.

To celebrate the 3rd anniversary of our podcast, USA Judo, USJF and USJA
decided to end the American judo alliance agreement. We talk about how
things have gone and what we have done the past 3 years with this Judo
podcast. Not missing a single episode the past 3 years and putting out
fun content for our fans every two weeks. What an interesting ride it's
been the past 3 years to episode 75. As we hope to produce even more
content for many more years. We then go into talking about one of the
first tournaments that was held last year after the pandemic lock downs
and restrictions lifting, the changes and improvements they made to it
this year. With changing location and improving things overall for
coaches and competitors. We finish up talking about one of the biggest
topics here in the U.S. With the USJF, USJA and USA Judo alliance coming
to an end. What it means for Judo in America. As well as how it may
affect you as a competitor or as a coach.

In episode 74 of Tatami Talk with Juan and Anthony. We talk about the UFC 285 fight between Tabatha Ricci and Jessica Penne. With Tabatha Ricci using her underrated Judo skills to get the win over the BJJ black belt Jessica Penne. We then go into talking about the One Championship grappling match at One Fight Night 7. Between Danielle Kelly a BJJ black belt and Ayaka "Zombie" Miura a Judo black belt. We give our opinions on the match. As well as the One Championship grappling rules. What we thought of it and who we thought won the match. We finished up talking about certain misconceptions about Judo. Misconceptions about weakness and exaggeration in some judo techniques. Like back taking and holding on to the person while you're being thrown. As well as the difference between getting thrown on a soft mat, compared to concrete, asphalt and dirt. The myth that a kesa gatame aka scarf hold or head and arm position, is no good and gives up your back.

In episode 73 of Tatami Talk with Juan and Anthony. We start off first talking about the biting incident that happened at the Paris Grand Slam. In the first round of the -52 kg category. A Kazakhstani judo player bit a Belgium judo player on the calf well trying to escape an armbar. We then go into the -57kg finals in Tel Aviv. With an all Canadian final. Where Klimkait finally beat Deguchi with a throw. But with it not being without some controversy in the end. We finish up talking about the Clarisse Agbegnenou comeback troubles. Some of you may or may not know but she signed a sponsorship deal with Mizuno, but the French national team is sponsored by Adidas. At this tournament she decided to wear her Mizuno sponsored Gi. In doing this the French team decided to punish her by taking away all her government sponsored funding. As well as not allowing any French team coach to coach her at the tournament

We then go to an interesting court case of ONE Championship getting sued by The Boxing Association of Thailand. For putting on matches using the Muay Thai name but not following Thailand's Muay Thai rules and regulations. Very similar to when Kano stopped other martial arts from using the name of Judo. In other grappling styles. We finish up with talking about grappling's little dirty secret. How to stop, prevent and treat skin infections. What you should do to try to prevent getting rashes, ringworm, staph and other infections like infantigo.

In episode 71 of Tatami Talk with Juan and Anthony. We give a big congratulations to our head instructor at Hollywood Judo Dojo. Sensei Philippe Morotti on receiving his 6th Dan (red and white belt) from the USJA. We also talk about Street Fighter putting in their first true Judo character in the upcoming Street fighter 6. And give our takes on Judo characters in fighting games. After that we answer a viewer's question about kosen Judo and kosen Judo tournaments. Our main topic is something different and fun.
