  • When Your Body's Coping Becomes the Illness

Dr. Eric Gordon has spent more than 45 years listening to the patients other doctors couldn't figure out, and he credits one habit for most of what he's learned. When a patient's symptoms didn't make sense, he assumed the gap was in his own knowledge and kept looking.

His central idea reframes root cause medicine. Removing the original trigger still matters, but in someone who has been sick for years, the illness is often the body's compensation for what happened. He walks through the cell danger response described by Dr. Robert Naviaux and explains why it finally made sense to him that antioxidants and big supplement regimens so often did nothing. In chronic gut inflammation, trace mineral absorption stays shut down, aldehydes build up, and energy keeps falling. That lines up closely with what I see through the lens of microbial medicine.

Dr. Gordon explains why mold exposure has to be addressed first, and he cautions against letting a single abnormal mold test explain every symptom. He also layers in peptides such as KPV and larazotide to calm an overactive gut and immune system. We spend a good stretch on plasmapheresis. He sees it as an adjunct to the rest of treatment, and he raises a caution that rarely comes up: in people with chronic infections, several sessions packed into a short period can strip away antibodies they still need.

    About the Guest:

Dr. Eric Gordon, MD, is the founder and Medical Director of Gordon Medical Associates in San Rafael, California, and President of the Gordon Medical Research Center. In more than 45 years of clinical practice, he has focused on complex chronic illness, including ME/CFS, Lyme and other tick-borne diseases, mold illness, autoimmune conditions, mast cell activation syndrome, and mitochondrial dysfunction. He is known for taking on patients whose cases don’t make sense to other doctors and for determining the right treatment order rather than chasing a single diagnosis.

Dr. Gordon co-authored Metabolic Features of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with Dr. Robert Naviaux, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2016. His work draws on Dr. Naviaux’s research on the cell danger response. He speaks regularly for organizations such as ILADS and ISEAI, and he earned his MD at Albany Medical College.

  • Jay Campbell on GLP-1s, Hormones, and Consciousness

Jay Campbell and I started somewhere unusual for a health podcast: consciousness. For Jay, physical optimization and spiritual awareness feed each other. Get your body out of inflammation and pain, and you have more room to show up for other people. His father told him when he was young that you only have two things in life, your health and your integrity, and it took him years to realize how true that was.

Then we got into hormones. Jay believes a large share of people in the developed world are walking around with hormone levels well below where they should be, including people in their 20s, and he points to screens, poor sleep, lack of sunlight, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. I see the same thing in young athletes, where testosterone and bone health are dropping. We agree on the order of operations, though. Fix the foundation first, and hormones come later.

A big part of the conversation is GLP-1s and his upcoming book, Metabolic Awakening. Jay argues that most of the side effects people hear about come from high starting doses, rapid escalation, and no lifestyle change, and that microdosing alongside protein, resistance training, and cardio is a very different experience. He also talks about the appetite-quieting effect he sees, and why he thinks GLP-1s may help with other compulsive patterns, including alcohol.

We finish on the frontier. Jay describes the myostatin inhibitor and Klotho products Bio Longevity Labs has released, the early results he's seeing, and his own honest answer on long-term risk: the jury's out. We also get into peptide sourcing, why blends can be stable when they're made properly, and his view on oral versus injectable peptides.

    About the Guest:

Jay Campbell is a four-time international bestselling author on hormone optimization, including books on therapeutic testosterone, and a co-founder of Bio Longevity Labs. He has used therapeutic testosterone for nearly 25 years and writes and teaches on peptides, GLP-1s, longevity, and consciousness.

His newest book, Metabolic Awakening, focuses on using GLP-1 peptides for strength, longevity, and metabolic health, with a large section on the mistakes and side effects he says come from poor dosing.

  • Regenerative Cardiology and the Heart Tests Most People Skip

I met Dr. Abid Husain at a longevity summit in Austin, and after hearing him lecture, I wanted him on the show. Heart disease is still the leading cause of death worldwide, and he is one of the few cardiologists I know who treats the whole system around the heart.

Abid spent 15 years in conventional cardiology, mostly at the end of the line, in the hospital and the emergency room. He left that model to focus on prevention and on what he calls regenerative cardiology: using hormones, peptides and, in selected cases, exosomes to support the body's own repair. He walks through where GLP-1 and GIP medications, tesamorelin, BPC-157 and TB-500 fit in his practice, and he is clear that much of the peptide and exosome data is still early, some of it from animal studies only.

The part I would send to anyone with a family history is how he assesses risk. He looks at plaque through three lenses: metabolic, inflammatory, and thrombotic, and he reads ApoB alongside LDL to estimate particle size. For inflammation, he looks well beyond CRP to oxidized LDL, the gut, the nasal passages, and environmental toxins, which lines up with the microbial work I do every day. On imaging, he explains why a calcium score or a carotid ultrasound can miss soft plaque, and why he prefers a coronary CT angiogram for people at risk. My own calcium score is zero, and I still went on to have a CCTA.

Everything here is Dr. Husain's clinical approach, and several of the therapies we discuss, including BPC-157, TB-500, and exosome infusions, are experimental and not FDA-approved. Nothing here is medical advice. Talk with your own cardiologist before starting, stopping, or changing any medication or treatment.

    About the Guest:

Dr. Abid Husain is a cardiologist who sees patients at Boulder Longevity Institute. He practiced conventional cardiology for 15 years, much of it in hospital and emergency care, before moving into functional medicine, hormone therapy, and what he calls regenerative cardiology.

His work combines standard cardiac care with hormone optimization, peptides, and emerging regenerative therapies, focusing on prevention and reading cardiovascular risk from several markers at once. He also teaches on the longevity medicine lecture circuit.

  • Dr. Peter McCullough on Spike Protein, Recovery and the Vaccine Schedule

I first met Dr. Peter McCullough at a Lyme conference, and his talk there stayed with me. He is coming up on 40 years in medical practice as an internist and cardiologist, and he is also a trained epidemiologist. Before the pandemic, his research was in chronic disease. After it, he moved into acute SARS-CoV-2 infection and the complications he sees after infection and vaccination.

His central argument is that the spike protein is the common thread. He believes it persists in the body for years, that it drives long COVID, and that the mRNA vaccines load the body with far more of it than the infection does. He walks through the studies he relies on, the heart and clotting problems he sees in his patients, and why he thinks genetics, such as variants in cardiac proteins or clotting factors, may explain why some people are hit much harder than others. Because there is no commercial blood test for the spike protein, he uses the spike antibody test as a proxy, and he explains the thresholds he uses to decide who needs treatment.

From there we get into recovery. His published base protocol combines nattokinase, bromelain, and curcumin on an empty stomach, and he describes the patients he has treated with it and why he is careful about bleeding risk around surgery. I shared how closely that lines up with what we do in practice, including testing antibodies and working to bring them down.

The last third of the conversation is about vaccines more broadly. Dr. McCullough walks through his book with John Leake on the history of vaccination and the McCullough Foundation's report on autism risk factors, which he says points to childhood vaccines given in combination. He argues for moving away from a fixed schedule toward vaccines given by clinical need, and for respecting parents who choose differently.

    About the Guest:

Dr. Peter McCullough is a board-certified internist and cardiologist and a trained epidemiologist, now in his 40th year of medical practice, with more than 1,000 scientific publications. He is chief scientific officer of The Wellness Company, president of the McCullough Foundation, and host of The McCullough Report.

Before the pandemic, his research focused on chronic disease. Since 2020, he has concentrated on SARS-CoV-2 infection and the complications he attributes to the infection and the vaccines. His books include Courage to Face COVID-19 and Vaccines: Mythology, Ideology, and Reality, co-written with John Leake.

  • The Amino Acids Your Brain Needs To Calm Down

I have had patients referred to me for mental health concerns who changed a great deal once we went to work on the gut, so a conversation about what the brain is actually built from was always going to hold my attention. Laurie Hammer works one level up from where I usually start. She focuses on the amino acids the brain uses to make its neurotransmitters, and what happens when the supply runs short.

Her process starts with a long intake, from birth to the present, and a set of questionnaires that point her toward one of five categories: serotonin, GABA, endorphins, catecholamines and glucose regulation. Clients receive a kit of nine amino acids in the mail, including tryptophan, GABA, theanine, and tyrosine. In session, they open a capsule under the tongue, wait about five minutes, and tell her what they notice. Some say their thinking feels clearer or their body relaxes. Occasionally someone feels a little woozy or gets a mild headache. When someone does not respond at all, she looks at cortisol, gut health, and hidden infections next.

Serotonin is the pattern she sees most in her own clients, followed by GABA and then dopamine. She starts with tryptophan over 5-HTP because the body can route tryptophan where it is needed. None of it replaces the basics. Laurie tells clients they need animal protein, real food, morning light, and sleep, and she asks many of them to cut the nightly wine and ease off caffeine. That lines up with my foundation five, and it is why her aim is for clients to need fewer supplements as they go.

Amino acid therapy is Laurie's clinical approach, and results vary from person to person. Nothing here is medical advice. If you take an antidepressant, an ADHD medication, or any other prescription, talk to your own clinician before adding amino acids, and never stop a prescribed medication on your own.

    About the Guest:

Laurie Hammer, FNTP, is a functional nutritional therapy practitioner who uses amino acid therapy to help clients with anxiety, low mood, burnout, and brain health, and she hosts the Take Back My Brain Podcast. Her typical client is a woman between 40 and 60 dealing with anxiety, hormone changes, and the feeling that the medical system has not helped her.

Laurie came to this work as a patient. She struggled with an eating disorder, anxiety, and depression through her teens and college years, and in 1996 an outpatient clinic in Mill Valley, California found she had celiac disease and brought amino acids into her care. That experience became the foundation of her practice.

  • Your Arteries Are A Muscle, Not A Pipe

I have been saying for years that we treat the bark instead of the tail we are standing on. Diamond Fernandes has spent twenty seven years watching cardiology do a version of the same thing, and his correction is a single sentence: arteries are a muscle, not a pipe.

Viewing an artery as a filling channel means waiting until it is blocked. Viewing it as living tissue shifts the focus to what damages the lining. Plaque forms like a pimple beneath the surface, making rupture the real danger instead of narrowing. This is why clean calcium scores do not impress him. Calcium reveals hardened material while ignoring dangerous soft plaque underneath, potentially offering a false sense of security.

Before accepting a lifelong prescription, he suggests asking three questions: how much longer will it make you live, what is the number needed to treat, and what is the number needed to harm? He explains how relative risk manipulation obscures your actual odds. While acknowledging medications save lives in acute events, he objects to taking them without understanding these tradeoffs.

On genetics, Diamond notes predispositions sit in a dark room until your choices turn on the light. This perfectly echoes my own foundation five: eat right, sleep right, move right, talk right, poop right. We also cover gut health, nutrient depleting medications, and why the human stress response is uniquely destructive.

Diamond's clinic describes its aim as preventing and reversing heart disease. That is his clinic's framing of its own work, and individual results vary. Nothing here is medical advice, and no one should change or stop a prescribed medication based on a podcast. Talk to your own clinician.

    About the Guest:

Diamond Fernandes is a cardiac rehabilitation and exercise physiology specialist and the founder of Heart Fit Clinic, a cardiovascular longevity practice he started in 2007 that has since grown to five clinics across Canada. He is an allied healthcare professional rather than a physician, with 27 years in cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation.

His path into the field started at home. His father had a first heart attack at 38, bypass surgery at 42, and another heart attack seven years after being told he had new arteries. Diamond is the author of Beating Heart Disease: 5 Powerful Pillars to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease and Death of the Stress Test, and says he sits on the Canadian Cardiovascular Society as a past president on the cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation side.

  • Eczema Isn't Just a Skin Issue. It's a Whole Body Signal.

I open almost every episode by asking for the origin story, because pain drives purpose, and Andra McHugh's is one of the clearer examples I have heard. Her third baby was essentially born with eczema. Her two year old came down with it the way you come down with a cold, a small patch on the inside of a thigh that took over her whole body. The pediatrician's plan was two steroid creams caustic enough that Andra was told to glove up before applying them. She walked out with the resolve to solve it another way, and her account is that all four of her children healed without pharmaceuticals.

What I wanted from her was the order of operations, and she gives it plainly. Food first, because it is the one thing a parent can change at the next meal. Then symptom relief, so a child can sleep, using an herbal oil, a comfort spray and a tallow cream rather than anything the liver has to work harder to clear. Then the home, then supplements, and only then testing. We spend real time on the parts most people skip: pairing foods so they actually digest, why fermented foods and bone broth can work against a high histamine child even though they are treated as gut health staples, and how butyrate and the short chain fatty acids feed the cells that hold the gut lining together. We also talk honestly about what raises the degree of difficulty, from a course of antibiotics to a C section to the glyphosate that a farmer at my own market told me is in everything grown around here. None of that is a reason to give up. It is a reason to understand why your child is where they are, and then to change the terrain.

    - - - - -

    About the Guest:

Andra McHugh is the founder of Eczema Kids and the creator of the Eczema Elimination Method. She came to this work as a parent rather than a clinician. With a one month old and a two year old both breaking out head to toe, the plan she was offered was two steroid prescriptions, gloves for her own hands, bleach in the bath, and hope. She built her approach on her own four children instead, and she now teaches it to families around the world.

Her work focuses on lowering inflammation, interrupting the flare cycle, and rebuilding the skin barrier from the inside out through food, gut support, a lower toxic load at home, and children's skin care she formulates herself. She also hosts the Eczema Kids Podcast.

  • Your Breath Is the Most Overlooked Lever in Your Health

Every so often the simplest thing turns out to be the most powerful, and this conversation is a good example. Dr. Sachin Patel is the founder of the Living Proof Institute and a longtime leader in functional and lifestyle medicine, and he has spent the last few years going deep on something all of us are already doing, and almost none of us are doing on purpose: breathing. His premise is that the breath is the most overlooked system in the body, a two-way door to the nervous system that you can use to shift how you feel, focus, and recover.

We get practical. Sachin walks through the BOLT score as a way to find your baseline, why he is a fan of nose breathing, and how to build breath awareness in small, repeatable ways rather than adding one more protocol to your day. What I appreciate most is his framing as a precision wellness practitioner: take the things you are already doing and do them with awareness and precision, and health gets a lot more accessible. He is generous too, giving away most of his breathwork tools for free. If you have been chasing complicated fixes, this is a reminder that one of the most powerful levers you have is the next breath.

    - - - - -

    About the Guest:

Dr. Sachin Patel, DC, is the founder of the Living Proof Institute and a globally recognized leader in functional and lifestyle medicine. A chiropractor who moved into functional medicine in 2006 and then into what he calls precision wellness, he has delivered hundreds of workshops, reached millions through his videos and online teaching, and become a passionate advocate for a healthcare model built around the body's own capacity to heal. His current focus is breathwork, which he considers one of the most profound and most overlooked tools we have for the nervous system and overall health.

  • The Root Cause Hiding Behind One Family's Alzheimer's Diagnosis with Nicole Bell

An engineer is trained to ask one question over and over: what is the actual root cause? Nicole Bell asked it about her own husband, and the answer changed her life's work. Nicole Bell is an MIT and Duke trained engineer, the author of the memoir What Lurks in the Woods, and the CEO of Galaxy Diagnostics, and she came on TBD Fit to tell me a story I have not stopped thinking about. When her husband Russ began to decline, the diagnosis was early-onset Alzheimer's, a door that in his case seemed to close on any real answers. Nicole kept asking why, and what she eventually uncovered, a hidden tick-borne infection, moved her from caregiver to advocate working to get stealth pathogens taken seriously in neurodegenerative disease. We get into her story, the diagnostic gaps she ran into, and why the root cause question belongs even in medicine's hardest cases. This is an emerging area of science, and Nicole is careful about what is known and what still needs proving.

    - - - - -

    About the Guest:

Nicole Bell is an engineer, entrepreneur, and author with degrees from MIT and Duke and more than twenty years in medical devices and diagnostics. After her husband Russ was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's and later found to have tick borne infections, she chronicled their search for answers in her memoir What Lurks in the Woods. Today she is the CEO of Galaxy Diagnostics, a company focused on detecting stealth and vector borne pathogens, and an advocate working with the Center for Lyme Action and Project Lyme to push for better recognition of hidden infections in chronic and neurodegenerative disease.

  • The Vitamin Your Child's Brain May Not Be Getting

Lindsey Wells got into this the way a lot of good clinicians do, by meeting one patient. A teenager with autism came through her rotations in naturopathic school and brightened every room he walked into, and she decided that was the population she wanted. A decade later, most of her practice is children with autism, PANS and PANDAS, and tick-borne illness, and a lot of her attention sits on one specific mechanism: cerebral folate deficiency. Not enough folate in the brain, which is a different question from whether there is enough in the body. She describes autoantibodies that bind the folate receptors on the blood-brain barrier and block the door, and she is clear about how much that changes the workup once you know to ask.

We spend real time on what she does with that information. Removing animal dairy is her first move, and she explains the molecular mimicry logic behind it. High-dose folinic acid is the second, and she is candid that the prescription version, leucovorin, often gets prescribed below a therapeutic dose by clinicians unfamiliar with the condition. She also walks through what she watches for when a child titrates up too fast. Then we get into the part of her practice I did not expect to be so central: infection. Her line about being more concerned with the ticks she does not find than the ones she does stayed with me, and so did her framing of what she calls constant flares, where the old relapsing-and-remitting pattern stops showing up at all. Her own research now puts numbers on some of this, and she talks about what she is working on next. To me, this is not a vitamin deficiency story. It is a transport story.

This conversation is for education only and is not medical advice. Testing and treatment decisions for a child belong with your own clinician. Dr. Wells has a commercial interest in the supplement and herbal products discussed.

    About the Guest:

Dr. Lindsey Wells is a naturopathic physician and a Fellow of the Medical Academy of Pediatrics and Special Needs, practicing in Trumbull, Connecticut. Her work centers on children with autism, PANS and PANDAS, and vector-borne illness, and she trained and practiced alongside Dr. Nancy O'Hara.

She is the first author of a 2024 study in the Journal of Personalized Medicine examining folate receptor alpha autoantibodies in a PANS and PANDAS population, and a 2026 follow-up in Diseases looking at the same antibodies in patients with vector-borne illness. She is a past president of the Connecticut Naturopathic Physicians Association, the author of the children's book Super Sam and the Battle Against PANS/PANDAS, and the founder of the Well-Minded Mommas Club. She also founded WellSupplements, a herbal glycerite company.
