Weddings are sexist, no matter how you frame them. But never fear! You don’t need to renounce your day of celebration, family and joy just yet.
Let’s deconstruct some of the “standout” sexist traditions of the white western wedding and find out exactly what a wedding-loving feminist gal or guy can do about ‘em!
We want to acknowledge that we speak about a topic from a community that we are part of. We do not want to speak for people from other communities where weddings differ from the traditional western heterosexual variety as we do not feel qualified to do so.
We also acknowledge that we are incredibly lucky to live in a country where we, largely, have the choice whether or not to get married. Too many people in other countries and cultures do not have this privilege. In a small effort to help, we’ve listed some great organisations below which are helping in the fight for equality.
