So for Culture Night, the people at Coughlans Live asked me to put together a Cork Culture DJ set. As ever a scope that wide really interested me:
It wasn't 'only recent music', even though this mix features a lot of that.
It wasn't 'bands that have played Coughlans' - but I think nearly 30 of the ones I played have in some form or other.
and it wasn't...
A definitive overview of Cork's Culture in a singular 2-hour-ish mix.... is that possible?
It was a Friday night DJ set in a bar that was to represent Cork's broad and mixed culture and music. There were some people there who didn't know what I was doing; to them they'd probably worked all week and were just enjoying a few drinks with buddies and I hope they enjoyed the soundtrack to that and didn't even click it was all so local. If that happened I'm as happy as getting people who knew the addresses of every act!
I followed my mood at the time, and in retrospect there are obvious omissions. I think I could probably do another mix and not repeat a track.
In this case I had a specific skillset: I am a DJ: I have been involved in and reporting on Cork music for 25 years; I've got my tastes; and I want to reflect the entire community - not just the now. This is an intersection of those 4 elements.
There are some youtube recordings of demos and rare records I'd love to find, speaking of 'old school' there are several acts who indeed went to my old secondary school. I could have played an hour of bands who all could credit Tony Doherty for facilitating their formative gigs. (In fact I'll do that soon...)
Looking back on the selected list, I see plenty of parents and children, siblings, and 2 bands I played twice! There are songs released in the 1970s, and songs by people who are still too young to be allowed into the bar during the DJ set!
