Te Mātāwai has a leadership role in restoring te reo Māori as the nurturing first language in our homes and communities.

This role also involves advising on and influencing the Crown’s efforts in protecting, promoting, and revitalising the Māori language.

Te Matatū is team within in our tari that works with Ministers of the Crown, agencies and officials to support, advise and enable them to understand how they can best give effect to the active partnership as stated in te Ture mō te Reo Māori 2016 and further defined by the Te Whare o te Reo Mauriora model that underpins both Iwi. On the 14th of September 1972, representatives of Ngā Tamatoa and Te Reo Māori Society delivered the Māori language petition, with over 30,000 signatures, to Parliament. The petition asked for active recognition of te reo Māori in Aotearoa New Zealand, and for the language to be taught in schools. 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of this important moment, which is often seen as the starting point for a significant revitalisation of te reo Māori. Tangata whenua who are in the process of reclaiming their reo Māori collectively go through a myriad of unique emotions and experiences. When we assume that as Māori, we see te reo as valuable and relevant, our main challenge is addressing how we enable (and resource) whānau to engage with te reo. This podcast speaks to the findings from the national research project Manawa Ū ki te Reo Māori, which surveyed motivations and barriers for Māori language acquisition and use. Also discussed in this podcast is the importance of Māori thinking about whānau language planning as a long-term goal, as well as the launch of Dr. Awanui Te Huia's new book 'He Reo Tuku Iho'.
