What if the years after 50 aren't about losing yourself, but finally finding yourself?
At 62, I've come to believe something deeply hopeful: every decade of our lives offers us something the decade before couldn't.
In this personal episode of Tea with Sophie, I'm exploring the extraordinary transformation that can happen as we move through midlife and beyond.
From the disruption of our 40s and the rebuilding of our 50s to the clarity that can emerge in our 60s, I share what I've learned from my own experiences and almost two decades of coaching women.
And I introduce something I call the cocoon phase — that often misunderstood period when we begin craving more quiet, solitude, nature, and space to reconnect with ourselves.
What if this isn't withdrawal from life, but preparation for a beautiful new chapter?
We'll also explore the invisible rules women carry, why positive thinking isn't always the answer, and how we can begin building the physical and emotional reserves that support a bold, meaningful future.

What if everything you've unconsciously assumed about getting older isn't necessarily true?
I recently returned from hosting my annual IGNITE retreat at Rancho La Puerta, where I had the privilege of sitting down with its extraordinary 104-year-old co-founder, Deborah Szekely.
She is sharp. Funny. Mobile. Curious. Engaged. Still deeply involved in the work she began decades ago.
And when I asked her about her secret to longevity, her answer stayed with me:
Keep looking forward. Keep making things better.
In this episode of Tea with Sophie, I share what meeting Deborah taught me about longevity, purpose, movement, nourishing food, resilience, and what it really means to grow older without allowing your world to become smaller.
We also talk about something I see far too often in women after 50: life happens — loss, illness, divorce, career changes, children leaving home — and somewhere along the way, we can become stuck in the version of ourselves created by what happened to us.
Deborah reminded me that acknowledging what we've been through and continuing to look forward are not mutually exclusive.
So this episode isn't really about trying to live to 104.
It's about asking a much more important question:
Who do you want to be for however many years you have ahead of you?
Because it's never too late to start becoming her.

This is an episode I want every woman to hear — and share.
My guest, Dr. Liz O’Riordan, has an extraordinary perspective on breast cancer. She spent years as a breast cancer surgeon before becoming a breast cancer patient herself. She knows what it is to sit on both sides of the desk.
In this powerful and incredibly practical conversation, Liz and I cut through some of the fear, confusion and outright misinformation surrounding breast cancer.
We talk about HRT and breast cancer risk, dense breasts, mammograms, genetic testing and BRCA mutations, alcohol and lifestyle, breast cancer risk assessments, and the dangerous health misinformation women are increasingly exposed to online.
Liz also explains why mammograms remain such an important screening tool, what breast density actually means, and why breast awareness involves so much more than simply checking for a lump.
She walks us through the changes we should actually be looking for in our breasts — including changes to the skin, nipple, shape and size, as well as what to feel for under the arm.
We also have an important conversation about alternative cancer treatments, social media testimonials, AI-generated health information and why “someone said it worked for me” is not the same thing as evidence.
And finally, Liz shares the deeply personal story behind her recent decision to publicly show her breast cancer scars and say the words: “I don't want to die.”
Liz is smart, compassionate, funny, refreshingly no-nonsense — and committed to helping women get clear, evidence-based information.

Cortisol belly. Cortisol face. Cortisol detox.
Apparently, cortisol is responsible for everything from stubborn belly fat and a puffy face to poor sleep, food cravings, and exhaustion. And, of course, there's no shortage of supplements, teas, and detoxes promising to fix the problem.
But what does the science actually say?
In this episode of Tea With Sophie, I'm taking a closer look at the cortisol conversation, particularly for women over 50.
We'll explore what cortisol does in your body, why you need it, and whether elevated cortisol is really the reason you're struggling with belly fat after menopause.
I'll also explain the difference between an ordinary puffy face and a genuine medical condition associated with excess cortisol, why you cannot detox this essential hormone, and what I've learned about cortisol testing over my 20-plus years working in women's health.
Most importantly, I'll share practical ways to support a healthy cortisol rhythm without getting caught up in another expensive wellness trend.
Because the goal isn't to eliminate cortisol. It's to help your body work with it.

Women over 50 are being told to eat more protein everywhere we turn. More protein at breakfast. More protein at lunch. Protein shakes, bars, powders, snacks — even protein chips.
But how much do we actually need?
And are we becoming so focused on protein that we're missing something even more important?
In this episode of Tea with Sophie, I give you a simple starting point for calculating your protein needs after 50 and explain why I want you to ask a different question:
What am I getting WITH my protein?
We talk about the complete nutritional “package” that comes with different protein sources; why fiber and phytonutrients matter enormously after 50; plant-based protein sources; resistance training; protein distribution throughout the day; and my simple “protein anchor” approach to building a meal without obsessively tracking every gram.
My mantra for this episode:
Don't protein max. Nutrient max.
And ultimately, remember that nutrition is only one part of the picture. Movement, muscle, sleep, your nervous system, and how you treat yourself all matter too.

If you're ready to stop piecing together conflicting health advice and want to understand the five areas I focus on when helping women become stronger, healthier, and more confident after 50, this is your next step.
Has your digestion become worse since menopause?
Perhaps you are suddenly experiencing more bloating, constipation, abdominal discomfort, or sensitivity to foods you have eaten for years. You are not necessarily imagining it—but the explanation is far more complex than simply having an “older” digestive system.
In this episode of Tea with Sophie, I explain why your gut is not an isolated tube. Digestion involves your brain, nervous system, immune system, hormones, liver, pancreas, intestinal lining, and the vast microbial ecosystem living inside you.
I explore the emerging science around menopause and the gut microbiome, including possible changes in microbial composition and diversity. I also explain the gut-brain axis, the enteric nervous system, the role of stress, and why my own severe IBS only began to resolve when the emotional turmoil in my life changed.
Gut issues are multifactorial. They may be influenced by medical conditions, medications, food intolerances, hormonal changes, sleep, movement, stress, nutrition, and many other factors. That means the solution must be multifactorial and personalized too.
You’ll leave with a simple five-pillar gut audit to help you identify the area of your life that may need the most support.
I’m also hosting a live workshop for women over 50 tomorrow. We’ll explore why you may still feel stuck despite doing so many of the “right” things—and how to begin caring for your body as one integrated system.
Join the workshop here.
Persistent, severe, or newly developed digestive symptoms should always be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.
What if the number women have been taught to watch most closely is not the number that tells us the most about our health?
In this in-depth episode of Tea With Sophie, Sophie explores why weight and BMI can miss some of the most important metabolic changes happening in a woman’s body after menopause.
She explains the difference between soft subcutaneous fat, deeper visceral fat, and ectopic fat that can accumulate inside organs such as the liver and pancreas. She also unpacks Professor Roy Taylor’s Personal Fat Threshold and Twin Cycle Hypothesis—and what they may help us understand about insulin resistance, hemoglobin A1c, fatty liver, and type 2 diabetes.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
When Sophie recently polled her own YouTube community, 97% of the women who responded said they were not interested in taking a GLP-1 medication. While that is not a scientific survey of all women, it raises an important question:
What can women do when they want to improve their metabolic health without medication?
The answer is not one magical food, supplement, or workout. It is an intelligent and consistent approach to resistance training, daily movement, cardiovascular fitness, whole fiber-rich foods, adequate protein, sleep, alcohol, and overall energy balance.
Most importantly, this is not another conversation about punishing your body or trying to recreate the stomach you had at 25.
Your waist circumference is information.
It is not your identity, and it is certainly not your worth.
The real goal is not to become smaller.
It is to become stronger, metabolically healthier, more capable, and fully alive in the decades ahead.

What if getting your spark back after 50 has less to do with another supplement, morning routine, or wellness hack — and more to do with something decidedly less sexy?
Consistency.
In this episode of Tea with Sophie, I’m talking about why consistency may be one of the greatest superpowers we can develop in midlife—and why its best friend is discipline.
Not punishment. Not being hard on yourself. But discipline as an act of self-care and self-love: learning to show up for yourself even when you don’t feel like it.
I unpack the two biggest enemies of consistency—the negotiating voice inside your head and the distractions all around you—and why relying on motivation almost always sets us up to start and stop.
I also share what’s happening for me as I write my fifth book, why I have to practice exactly what I teach, and the simple strategies I use to keep going when resistance kicks in.
Most importantly, we’ll look at the connection between consistency and self-trust:
Consistency creates evidence. Evidence creates self-trust. Self-trust creates confidence.
And that confidence can change what you believe is possible for the rest of your life.
My challenge to you? Choose one small promise you can make to yourself—and keep for the next 30 days.
What if the reason healthy habits feel so hard has less to do with willpower — and more to do with what’s around you?
In this episode of Tea with Sophie, I’m talking about environmental design: intentionally setting up your home so that it supports the healthier, calmer, stronger woman you’re becoming.
We’ll walk through your kitchen, bedroom, workout space, closet, and even the little corner where you go to breathe, journal or simply be quiet. I’ll show you simple ways to reduce friction, remove visual noise, make healthy choices easier, and create an environment that reinforces the habits — and the identity — you want to build.
Because sometimes transformation isn’t about adding another supplement, gadget or wellness hack.
Sometimes, it begins with one drawer, one shelf, one room — and creating space for the woman you’re becoming.
If you've ever thought:
"I'm eating well... I'm exercising... so why don't I feel like myself?"
This episode is for you.
Today I'm joined by Sandra, an incredible woman who had already made many of the healthiest lifestyle choices possible long before joining my Ignite program. She'd been eating a whole-food, plant-based vegan diet for years, avoided ultra-processed foods, and genuinely cared about her health.
Yet something was still missing.
Recently retired and feeling stuck, Sandra knew she wanted more than just better health markers. She wanted energy, confidence, purpose, and joy.
In this conversation, we explore what finally changed—and why lasting transformation isn't just about nutrition or exercise. It's about mindset, identity, community, and becoming the woman you want to be.
If you've ever wondered why you still don't feel your best despite "doing everything right," I think you'll see yourself in Sandra's story.
