  • Teachavision Number 16: AT For Millennials (Part 1)

Welcome to another edition of Teachavision! This episode is a very special one, because we're doing a first EVER, round table, for the podcast! I have gathered two childhood friends, in order to discuss the evolution of assistive technology for the blind; that is, adapted technology whether it was through speech or braille, so the blind and visually impaired can use. We will share our experiences with said technology and reflect on how it has gotten better over the years. On this episode, we will discuss old note takers. Note takers are specially made computers for the blind and visually impaired that had special software, with a line of braille and synthetic speech. PLEASE NOTE: some of these note takers are no longer being made, but we try our best to describe what they were. On the show notes, we leave links to old YouTube videos of some of these note takers being used, and we also show you some accessories we used as well! We hope you enjoy part 1, of this first ever roundtable discussion!

  • Teachavision Number 13: Eyes Free Parenting (Part 1)
Did you know that we blind people can be parents? Sounds silly, we're aware. However, there are so many misconceptions when it comes to people who are blind, and parents. Sadly, a lot of those are bad misconceptions. On this series, starting with Episode 13, I, Jose, speak to Sonia Herrera, who is a blind parent herself, married with two children. On this first part, she tells us how she felt when she heard the news that she'd be a mom for the first time, along with some stories of how people frowned upon her having children. Thanks to the Facebook group, "Blind Pen Pals" for allowing me to post the idea, and thanks to Sonia for allowing me to interview her. All this and more, on episode 13, of Teachavision, by Screenless Allies! PLEASE NOTE: many blind parents have different methods with children's upbringing, and this is one of MANY! there is NO such thing as a "correct method."

  • Teachavision Number 11: The Blindness Unit
Welcome to another episode of Teachavision! This time, we are switching things up! A few months ago, I, Jose, did a presentation over blindness education in the classroom, at a community college called Frank Philips in Borger, Texas. Thanks to the professor for allowing me to record this presentation, and thanks to the students who also participated and allowed e to record their voices for Teachavision. Since the original presentation is about one hour and fifteen minutes long, I decided to cut some highlights from this that I feel stick out. From talking about teachers of the visually impaired, to teaching the basics of screen readers, we have it all on this episode, of Teachavision! We hope you enjoy!
