The cockpit drill is a routine that is designed to maintain your control over the car.  If the cockpit drill elements are incorrectly or not adjusted it can make observations difficult, or impede your use of the pedals.  So it is essential.  For other free resources and information see our web and you tube sites:

The routine is designed to be done in sequence so that mirrors are done last - ensuring that after you have adjusted everything you can see out of your mirrors.

Sequence is important:  D.H.S.S.S.M

• Doors - are they all secure shut (including the boot)
• Handbrake - is it on so you dont roll back whilst preparing to set off
• Seat Adjustments - all done so you can reach pedals (slight bend in knee) and also check the Head Restraint
• Steering Wheel - so when you reach forwards your wrists touch top of wheel and you can see the dials (remember steering wheels adjust up and down as well further away or nearer)
• Seat Belt - not twisted and secure
• Mirrors - lastly check all interior and exterior mirrors.

Wet Weather Driving is a feature of May, if your caught in flooding conditions, couple of key tips - be seen (lights), Slow Down, Avoid deep puddles or flows of water, watch out for other drivers actions they may be wanting to avoid water flows - anticipate.  Watch out for HGVs spray can momentarily blur your view to the front and make sure your wipers are working properly and blades fit for purpose.  Above all avoid driving in flooding conditions and never go into water that you dont know the depth of, it can hide pote holes.   Avoid harsh braking & slow it down !

Parents, supervising a learner driver is a difficult sometimes daunting task.  But you can avoid stress by knowing how to get them ready.   Mirror work (poor observations, failing to check mirrors)  are among the top 5 reasons for failing a driving test.  So we have prepared a short aid for remembering which mirrors you check 

We cover in the podcast advice on use of the car Mirrors for:

1. Change of speed - rear view 
2. Change of direction - relevant door mirror (left for left move, right for right move)
3. Turning left / right - rear view, left mirror (for turning Left) with final check as you turn in left mirror (for cyclists etc) 
4. New road - rear mirror and right   
5. Stopping - on left - rear view (change of speed) and left mirror before you steer left .  stopping on right - rear view and right mirror
6. Moving Off - at Traffic lights for example - (the rainbow check)  left mirror, rear view mirror , right mirror.  

Embed this in your driving, and teaching your learner the principles becomes so easy!  and they are kept safer, for their life on the road.

Welcome to Skill.Zone for Parents who are supervising learner drivers.

In this first episode, the Directors of Drive Hart, Approved Instructors Sarah Hart and Julia  Clayton discuss how parents can get better control over supervised driving practice with a learner.  

Our 6 point - Key Tips for parents teaching their son/daughter to drive:    

1. Manage your expectations, learners cannot and should not be asked to approach junctions as fast as an experienced driver - slow it down for success (dont worry about whats behind you, you have L plates on!) 
2. Plan your practice area, don't just do a drive around, as this can take the learner into areas and situations they cannot cope with, and it stresses you both out!   Most experienced Instructors have "Nursery Slopes to start practice on" - identify quiet urban area with some easy junctions  and low levels of traffic.  
3. Speak to your Approved Instructor, practice what has been taught and get advice on where to go and any teaching tips (good instructors will be willing to do this!) 
4. Getting ahead of the student, you need to have eyes on stalks - looking ahead as you supervise to spot risks or issues to help them manage the driving. Better to manage out a risk early than leaving it all to get out of hand, so if you see something say it and help.  
5. Giving clear and concise directions,  well in advance,  (yes a long time before you would normally as an experienced driver) to give them time to process what they have to do.  
6. Reducing the speed on approach is a key tip, it takes much of the stress out of the practice.  Speed is the one main cause of private practice stress and problems, slow it down!
