  • Student Leadership in Russia
Nikita Panfilov and Glasha Osipycheva, the newly elected Head Boy and Head Girl at Letovo School in Moscow, explain their fresh approach to student leadership in boarding school. Rather than see their proctor/prefect roles as padding in their resumes, Nikita and Glasha are drawing on the science of social connection and their pioneering experiences at Letovo (which welcomed its first students in 2018) to re-imagine their leadership responsibilities. Parents, professional educators, and corporate CEOs will be awestruck by the urbane demeanor and worldly insights of these two teens.

  • Ending Racism Begins with Cross-Cultural Agility
Mrs. Diane Riley and Dr. Ivan Koshevoy are crushing stereotypes by bringing together gifted children from all over Russia. They are the Head and Deputy Head of Boarding at the Letovo School, which opened in 2018. The only school of its kind in Russia, Letovo is a British-model, boarding secondary school that actively recruits students from all across Russia’s 17,098,242 sq km, offering scholarships to any whose families cannot afford tuition. Every student is an intellectual powerhouse, but they differ in interests, ethnicity, religion, and socioeconomic status. With their hand-picked and highly trained team, Mrs. Riley and Dr. Koshevoy have created a residential life curriculum that may hold the key to ending the kind of racism, sexism, and homophobia that fuels violence.

  • On Viruses, Summer Camp, and the Virtue of Unselfishness
Most people will never save another person’s life in their life. Dr. Edward “Skip” Walton stopped counting a long time ago. He’s a pediatric emergency physician, university professor, lieutenant commander in the Navy Reserve, and the medical director at North Star Reach, a therapeutic camp that serves children with chronic illnesses. As if that weren’t enough, Skip was the waterfront director at Camp Belknap in the early 1980s, serving as my mentor before I ascended to that position and held on to it for nearly 30 years. In this interview, conducted while he was in post-exposure quarantine following several weeks of medical service with the Navy Reserve at the Javits Center in New York City, Skip talks candidly to families like yours about viruses, summer camp, and the virtue of unselfishness.
