How well does society really know you behind its masking of expectations? In a thought-provoking chat, life coach Joel Elston and LOA teacher Walt Thiessen peeled back the layers of norms to uncover our authentic selves underneath.

"Societal expectations are I mean, they are a recipe for disaster as far as like being disappointed," Joel asserted. Whether it's relationship standards, career paths, or gender roles, prescribed identities leave many feeling empty.

Walt agreed, adding the pandemic amplified this: "They were absolutely terrified during the pandemic. I mean, that's what that's what made the lockdown work." But at what cost to mental health as isolation and fear took hold?

Seeking truth, not acceptance, the pair challenged common assumptions. Joel recalled normalizing a client's choice to kneel during anthems by understanding his perspective, rather than judging.

How can you embrace your uniqueness? "Mindset is everything," Joel emphasized. Changing channels from external "triggers" to an internal broadcast of self-love gives freedom.

Walt shared another therapist's skillful method of disengaging from conflict by refusing to play along. Simply responding thoughtfully, if at all, diffuses power struggles and external "masks."
