Social media is the norm. From Twitter to Instagram to YouTube to Discord to Facebook and so forth, social media is readily accessible to all individuals connected to the internet. Influencers have become more and more of the norm, and today we have Pamela Price, a micro-influencer, and Jared Tafua, a parent, to discuss social media use, what influencers are, and how to be safe when online and how to keep our children safe.

Pamela Price lives with a rare disease, Behcet. However, she doesn't let this limit who she is or what she can do, rather she utilizes social media as an outlet to connect others with the same disease, to encourage and inspire others, like her, to keep striving for the best, and to just enjoy life and all the greatness it has to offer.

In this episode, Sue Thotz from Common Sense Media shares with Chris Hoang and Scott Moss the importance of Media Literacy. She provides examples as to how this is applicable to our everyday lives and why it is important for our students to become aware of what they are consuming, especially as deep fakes begin to emerge. She also shares different examples from the Common Sense Media curriculum that parents, guardians, and educators can utilize to help students better equipped to navigate the various types of media they consume.

Sue Thotz is the Director of Outreach for Common Sense Media. Which, as the name implies, focuses on common sense with media. Common Sense Media’s mission is to change that and believes that works to make the digital world better for kids and their families. They acknowledge that most technology wasn't built with kids in mind, they were built for adults. As a result, we need to educate and support our kids with understanding how to use the technology in a positive way.

Tech Corps and the Teaching and Learning Collaborative (TLC) have partnered to provide support to teachers, particularly elementary school teachers, in integrated computer science into their math curriculum. Erica Aguirre is a dedicated educator from Cerritos, California. Born and raised in the community, Erica developed a passion for learning and teaching at a young age. After graduating from high school, she pursued her studies at the University of California, Irvine, where she earned a degree in sociology. 

Erica's love for her hometown led her back to Cerritos, where she became a secondary history teacher. For the past 16 years, she has dedicated herself to educating the next generation of students on the importance of understanding the past to shape a better future. Her engaging teaching style and passion for her subject have inspired countless students to develop an interest in history and pursue further studies in the field. 

Erica is also involved in various initiatives to promote equity and social justice in education. She believes that education is a powerful tool for promoting understanding and compassion, and she works hard to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all her students. Her dedication to her students and her community has earned her the respect and admiration of colleagues and students alike. 

Erica lives with her family in Orange County, is a Disneyland annual passholder, and loves spending afternoons with her Star Wars-loving Bernedoodle on the couch.

Los Angeles County is approximately 4,000 square miles, enough space to fill 2,000,000 football fields. Within Los Angeles County there are many great organizations that support educators to become more comfortable with technology and provide many opportunities for professional growth and development with other educators. SGV CUE is one of those organizations. Chris and Scott have a small discussion revolving around what SGV CUE does, we dive into what a Twitter chat is, and we discuss why the investment in CUE is worth the value for all educators looking to integrate technology in their classrooms.

SGV CUE is an affiliate of CUE that offers professional development, networking opportunities, and support for teachers and educators that are blending technology into their classrooms.
