Tesla doesn't have a press fleet of vehicles for automotive journalists to review.  The company doesn't have a PR department or a media page either, which may explain the spotty coverage of the make over the years.  However, I was fortunate enough to spend some quality time with a Model Y offered up by a private owner at a press event in Wisconsin this past Spring.  These are my impressions.

Prices for new and used vehicles are at an all time high.  The cost of borrowing money is also at an all time high, thanks to inflation.  These are challenging times for the budget-minded.  According to most money management professionals, consumers should keep their monthly vehicle payments to about 10 percent of income, yet most are way above that.   YIKES!

Fisker Inc, a fledgling EV maker, is ramping up actual deliveries of its all new Ocean EV crossover SUV.  By the end of this year, the automaker expects to escalate its delivery rate to 300 vehicles a day.  Eschewing the heavy investment of a from-the-ground-up assembly plant and infrastructure, the company is relying on a well-known contract automaker to actually build the units.

What makes Chinese EV maker BYD stand out is not how they scaled up production over the years, or their lower-than-average production costs, or the fact that they exported over 400,000 vehicles to other countries for sale, or even how they are currently building and selling commercial EV buses in the United States, but the investment in the company 14 years ago by Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway.  What are they going to do next?

This past Spring, I got the opportunity to slide behind the wheel of the all-new Kia EV6, the first vehicle from Hyundai Group designed to ride on its all-new E-GMP EV platform.  The EV6 made a name for itself late last year by beating a Ferrari and a Lamborghini in a third-party certified competition.

Volvo Trucks believes that autonomous trucking has a profitable future in the United States.  So much so that the truck maker is actually moving to start a trucking company to move freight across select lanes in the Southern United States.  The company estimates that this could be a $42 Billion market in the next few years.
