[0:00] Hello i'm court tonna welcome to the universal windows podcast the show about everything windows such as surface x box phones and the windows insider program. Yeah yeah or is like you could say that's ten in a row ten and that's really eighty six in a row. In a slightly different venue with a few slightly different challenges than we're used to but where were we have challenges all the time but, they tend to change their many by think it if you're gonna be on the road alot it carry a lot more cables with you lose that doesn't produce is the zoom. What is working when they're gonna get to that place with key is a soft keyboard company. So windows phone had swift integrated and at the time go. Earlier this decade all the texting record for being beaten by people business with keyboard so it has things like trying to lift your, your digits like a farmer when every type the thumbs on a soft keyboard with a soft keyboard david you know they mean it, yeah have not not a physical keyboard like it having some classic blackberries or your mac subsurface as a hard the harbor keyboard but also has a soft keyboard, so what's you typing with your thumbs like most people do when they're taxing and the people in touch titus on the soft keyboard can help. So you don't have to lift a thumb and go to the next letter electric i'm go the next letter so fifty has built a drag so you can start.

As a losing market share of yet have market should lose it to. Well what's microsoft's the phone was an obvious and not going to be a dominant platform they brought us with key out for all. And i do use it from time to time on my on my phone but guess what what their bringing it to windows ten oddly enough. So you could use it with your surface trade. Or maybe some future device that's coming out and that's much more interesting than yeah cuz i rarely use a soft keep on my surface. You do when your hall that and there's a pass for jeff to enter that still it has for it official recognition.

Yes okay so is that so anyways so swift key is coming to windows ten in red stuff i was in the red zone five previews right. It is the ability to use it for some new hard hard where that might be coming yes, hello tests news story of the week so david i'm gonna go to another history wanted to be the first one, okay and microsoft news now officially rolling out, to everyone on ios and android so my first new stories about in the comics off news of news from microsoft about microsoft news hot i love that i love so i want to cover that one first so what's new about that well. First off the rebranded their news app to microsoft news. And google's got and use other people and use apps. To all of the news content that microsoft will provide across android ios and sn will be coming to the news. I have a date we knew that they were going to bring the refreshingly know that their gonna rebranded so because they got such creative genius is at microsoft.

[9:59] I came up with the phenomenal name of microsoft news what i'm install it you got me okay.

[10:07] So this is basically all and i send news app. Yeah that's a bit of a refresh look so that's our first new story or second story is that david needs to speed up on the sound board not right now that's but that. Is that has never amritsar from are okay dog rented a red hair that's alright so what's our second easter what the second news story is that. Remote app and salsa coming to windows ten. So what is your amount happen stop will fit around for a while they have for with many things right so for instance if you have x box gold. More games with gold okay you would log into the website portal and you would, you could expense of dishes give it to you it could of the x box but you could pick a game hmm, and purchase it or get it for free and then have install on your x box for a next time its fuck launch loaded it would load the game and i can do the same thing to my android phone i can be. Looking at the app somewhere on the internet and have it on my clean stuff right to now you can do from access store to the device of choice. Which would also be a that's almost like they're getting ready for some sort of. Future device well that's also plan catch up but it's it's it's in the future when i think it's i think it's useful sucker's shattering. Again from the ozarks anything use a from a corporate perspective but. They'd be great for home use also for kids what up an app on your wife's phone cuz she never does it or not but thought only guys about us computer what is the she doesn't have whatever app you need.

[11:49] Instead of being called into the her office to do it or your mother's computer okay okay yeah that's good so. That's the new feature but that's it all that earth shattering block. I think we're over seven features now i think this still some to come okay alright microsoft eclairs windows ten. April addition are ready for business shit. Right it's not or shattering again as you said that that's quick yeah so if three she came on may, yes and our engine our in june and they're saying it's ready for current printer business of current branch came out and now they're saying it was fairly quick and they they saying that they using ai eight track the success rate and. They were safe for devices are ready to accept it if corporations want to play it.

[12:49] Of the customers that i deal with that are running windows ten most of them are experimenting with eighteen or three and i haven't seen this or to take up environments before and the last and the last round and what's the reason for that i think. I think they just have become less afraid of it okay it interesting interesting interesting. Alright shall we move on david yes well when we do the okay so office three sixty five and off start calmer getting a make over a visual interface take over alright. Not sure what you mean by that while the other gonna look different alot of red i just gonna be following more the you know. The usual way they try to make office user to use by hiding the features that you don't using. And put in the future sue to use out there a bit more thought lion yeah, so i understand they're gonna have a new singer rip new ribbon for an easy lady to have everything changing again but also that multiple ribbons how terrible and the rabbit took like half of the screen i know that wasn't the half but it was. Well as a regular then soon you colors do its been awhile since the refresh the look but also use your to. Java is most relation to some java so this gonna bill for to a bill for a lot of realizations up the possibly have budgeted for. Adobe is integrating ps services directly to next of office to sixty five, the other artie are benny pdf services in officer sixty five right but there's gonna be some new ones so you can only say this. Always expedia but for the last few generations bicep able to sew a lot so you don't have to get a pdf right or get distiller and you can edit things that are in pdf in word or an edge. So that the edit a pdf and word does do a good job how while i was the whole idea of having a pdf as a people could kneaded. How.

[17:46] Yes all that that they would though that of course they could out of the pit was slightly challenge for them to do which is good enough protection. Okay well my understanding is well pdf render lot faster too so maybe microsoft please in pdf technology to render the men to the screens water take a look at that.

[18:06] So he signature solution is being a ticket office to file a case that makes sense and. Okay looking for that off to keep an eye on anything can help me not print off pdf send signed the memory scanner again is a good thing.

[18:24] If so that's okay what's next. What there was an article on the net on usb hubs for surface three it was kind of a fluffy article but it got me thinking to how much usb c i have run the house there. I don't have that much till usb c i have her house is my old windows phone that and uses that died on the lid is archer you have a surface. Tell that fuck to that's true but i never actually mia's b c cable and what's up with the camera cats answer your question about our cat charged it so you can church that so i've just thinking about what usb c devices i have. Inside my work laptop which the dell if my surface book to i have. Sam sung galaxy and my son has a chromebook. So of other certainly are a lot of compatibility issues and maybe the thing the pc repair that's my hp that i have for my client tell you my client is okay. But they try to be locked up for doing work for them yeah sickly and it's got usb c on it and i heard a rumor today to a. That apple with your next launch in september will be. I don't use what impressing but will be supporting us see to some extent so i don't know that means a lightning adaptor is gone. Which would be awesome i don't think it will be i think more mostly the charging cable will have lighting on one and the usb c on the other so can connect directly to mac.

[19:57] I think very happy but out might my point was just that.

[20:04] It's not taking that long for us pc to become more popular not as long as it took for the original usb year those are the things real estate job coming in a bit quicker than i thought it was. I'm glad one of apple took it on of course one connector olivia when connected room unless like one apple one with wireless charging bull. For sure i mean why would apple just knock it where the charging port for him to do something and that's what i see them doing it to people oh that's interesting at pulled. Well should we start that rumor how we could this week for that section show fan and don't take this sarcastic flight about apple. Does it almost sound circus reviews say it's the battery life on an iphone is very good.

[20:48] So having a port that you can charge all the time isn't that important for the first couple years about. Sure i suppose my pc but you that info wireless charging is nice to be become a little bit more ubiquitous so i know that there are some cars that have wireless charging built in table area put your phone to get wireless charging and. Can bluetooth right there as well so. Basically put it in the holder see not texting either while you're driving right for you tax with your voice which is for tax ellie's legal but texans with key. The trip sorry i just thought that was interesting just if apple through the weight behind it fine but if i was them i wouldn't bother i built that lady for another generation and then. Skip the poor church alright anything else yes one more one more hola before you do that. A little bit of reading if this is our last new story me to be really crisp on the news out for a while okay okay okay well then. So what is this i don't know sir, al makes windows up take a smoother with what this is its a lie all along okay so. Talking about the uptake and how quickly people are installing eighteen or three me other piece is how many people are having issues with. What eighteen or three so at an and the part are you set for it so not sure bus keep really real i suspect microsoft when they release eighteen of three whatever they did they don't necessarily know it works with all harbor yet.

[22:27] Because there's a limit all harbor a whole softer and so. Or they will know certain things that won't work with the block certain things so there they were manually blocking certain hardware in manually approve in certain harper and you know that worked okay but now they have some ai interface there's so. Can a proven block card for it much quicker ever itself right so. Yeah and i can guess a baby east on past experience with something doesn't work on this dell at work on these other ones well the same chipset or whatever right. So that's so that's how microsoft is making it less painful for people upgrade me that i do with the uptake of eighteen three fix uppsala keep looking.

Where can one week and working two weeks and um vacationing ticket so i can read cottage in to some fishing in gonna be going to toronto for sure, also gonna because polly wanna montreal my cousins coming in to town to visit his family are going to visit him and i'll probably be going to new york as well. Here are your hosts the surface men. I'm calling smith and i'm david smith and we are the surface missed and this is our second ever live show david where are we today we're at the aviation and space museum in ottawa and why are we here today. We were invited by the bottom pcs are very. Okay we got a live audience if you'd like the. Okay thank you but my thunderbolt we got an audience mike going as well and i ought men to the audience a little bit there my little fake life in this so. To thank you for having us this is episode eighty-five nine a row. I think it is i don't think we've ever done on a roll so they bought with seven eighty five for the row and this has been once a week that's correct that's correct so i. What are the show. We both live audience and those of you listening whenever wherever later on in time, and that's one of the beauties of podcasts is they don't three time linearly theory you could listen to show before we recorded. I don't know how you do that but i don't know if there is a of but that's of thanks again for having us. So for those of you that are not part of the studio audience the live audience we just get a small presentation on podcasting and how we when our podcast in our actually do a podcast so.

I have from a pc users can. I have a question for you actually it's about microsoft surface and it went wrong tee. I bought a couple should the settings for our mentor and sister. Armed to christmases ago i miss you be working this is a before and there's no problems with some. The best legs are quite suitable for some processing browsing now person around when there you to wraps. Where is the future four g clearly there has not been. I need upgrade from eight point one so i'm wondering if they're dead in the water over will be continues reading is dull fashion. However i'm just wondering what the future holds for the servers are t.

[4:44] Okay thank you for all that's a great question so i've got to it somebody that they would zero zero what i've had them you had them so i. Surface r t for those of you don't know was one of the first surface is launches same time as the surface pro i have one of those well have have a home. But it was on an arm chip and the reason it was was to compete with the device at the android tablets and the i pads out there that were using arm ship now the thing about arm ships. And as we talk about the past able to three big things will they don't use a lot of power right so the great for battery life, and they don't prove slot heat will does the battery light on the cheaper to buy right cheaper to buy so that also instant on to yelp most mobile phones, you press the buttons on it and it is very very little power six power when it's and it's, who is state but it's still on so you can get a full day's charge out of out of them which is much more difficult due the next eighty six or x sixty four based shit and i act if you compare the surface and the surface or t. They were the same screen size but the surface it was about half the thickness right and because of generate less heat it didn't need as much real estate to cool it so. Microsoft's first foray into tablets. We'll surface it and the surface pro their launch simultaneous of pro was using an i five and the art using arm ship and they have to build a special version of windows called windows are t to sport that device.

[6:14] Now unfortunately those devices were not as popular as microsoft at hope they took a nine hundred million dollar right down on them, they gave them away i think the artie's re hundred dollars there come away at conferences and as prizes for user group size at a conference and they said it were given the way to this boys and girls club in the, whoever it was said rid of these i pads away to the place and girls club yet exactly so. They they weren't for all that successful compared to the later generations of ice and it's funny cuz microsoft, as a company if you if you fall of them at all i heard some people from a different versions of windows well guess what up until windows three no one really used it same thing with. Dos up until three no one really used it up same thing what office right up with the word free to microsoft, internet explorer three right hyper v three that would microsoft it stride do the first time is hey were poking around where of what i'm sure if we can make if we can do anything here and their second version is hey we've caught up to the market leaders were doing, now if they were doing two years ago and then version three is like is there parody release so it kind of funny that work that way for the surface as well. But back to your question to microsoft is not announced any new releases for it last update was update three to believe is twenty sixteen. They've got some blog posts about what's new and i paid three but there aren't any official microsoft updates coming for it they basically.

[7:45] It said it on and of all it's on the left a funeral still run however there are sd two or three interesting side project it is an arm device so there are ways to we can you can get windows ten i'll tiana.

[7:58] Microsoft is got windows on arm we talked about that the show three four times and there are people that have found a way to load windows on, that i would make a lot less useful for, your sister and your mother but it more of a hobbyist of ice it's not a device that microsoft is actively developing and supporting for because it's an operating system that no one's developing for. So as long as it meets your needs and has something that you can use it for your feel free to keep using it.

[8:27] Oh yeah with another question yeah i just wonder if it if it's based on the arm chip there is the new windows on arm that that's right that when the new windows and arm the whole requires snapdragon eight thirty five or better, which only was released in late last year. So i have bills bills i think of the court tack like for for a forty five i think the r t which are for five generations back at least and. But there are people there try shoehorn it into their, there's a lot of extra hardware on than on the snap dragon eight thirty-five to help with some of the emulation required for the win thirty two apps. But but again it is non ship and there's lots and lots of different android very ios is out there another i'll t o s is out there that people are shoe warning on to all kinds of devices including. The artie's i don't think mike even of microsoft microsoft could trip ported over but they wouldn't spend the money now. Yeah source of surf party or the surface to their sagely orphan machines are ate up. I think it's time to.

[9:41] Set you story of the week that david you've got the news for this week okay whatever it come back to feature that we ll. So i jumped ahead up no no problem the from so. What kind of from the past to the present to the future to keeps going around and around in tell the show enough essentially what is a windows phone in copy taxes trade conference in trying it this week. Okay so microsoft's not making windows phones the last windows phone sold out of microsoft store but a month and a half ago everett thinks it's dead and here comes and tell. Basically it's the full version of windows are gonna be riding so it thirty two bit or sixty four bit running adam chip like us yeah it's an intel chipset suppose there are tripping at the full version of windows so you could run phone type things like. Talking although whoever uses that for iphone you could talk of you can look at my kids to know that. So really it's shortages in the makes of do there until with you that there really is no product at this point time. Lol intel there are some things coming out with us on know what is going to be the future well yep this will intel's lost a lot of credibility in that mobile space so that the adam chips are essentially not available anymore adam with lt, was canceled and all the mobile devices, and tablets are all using arm chips and now microsoft as move their os over the over to arm as well as arm servers and is rumors that.

[11:20] To be a mac that runs on our there is so, i guess intel's feeling the pressure to try to do something and innovate so that's exciting and now this is not a shipping product this is proof concept it would like a reference platform for other companies like dollar whoever to make the actual project okay. So that's interesting um what are we see if we can get any demo version to review i wanna demo surface hub yeah weekly will have to make those first okay. So it's so simple life studio audience does anybody here know what windows ten ass modus.

[11:55] That pano okay so one person so it's basically. Lock down version of windows ten that doesn't allow you to involve install windows thirty two or sixty four bit apps or just you'd just the store apps, does the store apps so which is grey from a security point of view you can mess up your battery and all that sort of thing but the problem is the same problem that was with the r t is the beach really can't run all the apps that you wanna run.

[12:22] So microsoft does away when you purchase a computer with the windows ten ass boat, that you can switch it to the full mode and you could run all the apps and happy events that this vengeance of the focal to send. But in one of the latest belts of the insider program. There's a switch to s mode so that it's gonna be interesting to see what exactly what happened that cuz would you be able to take a lap top install a couple of the apps that you need that are outside of the windows ten s world and then lock it back down, so the user can mess with that we don't really know yeah so. What's interesting so i don't i think ten s is still a solution looking for a problem problem exist but people aren't willing to restrict themselves that much it meant.

[13:09] My understanding on i'm going you can go as smote. To all rifle pro you can come back well there it is that's that's where we are getting a rumor is with red zone five you in the fall you will be able to rumor. So we shall see will not be great if you go set up your mom's computer and.

[13:33] Just lock it back down again verse there are lots of select on a computer and do it without that still another way to do i working endpoint security business so. Right that's okay if people don't have secure systems theory.

[13:51] Alright what else we'll manual to las the news is that microsoft's experimenting with underwater data centers water cold water cold okay. So i guess are basically at volkswagen beetle to the center cell and we're gonna go to water cool data since there might be water cooled it desires to meet the article that says background on off after the robbers sure there are, but that's interesting they don't have to take up to much real estate the nine that night in the his way power. That's right and you could build a greenhouse on top of there at that and how that's okay so where they does is a retirement. It's in our island and there was one other than they lost data centers there cuz of the tax structure they've had okay and so well what happens if they go outside the international the that than that in at the two hundred mile limit. Thing about international waters and that's interesting like it okay cuz there's a lot of expensive cooling and heating. That the heating powering which is the energy and then cooling it's really expensive thing to do so great that is jen eight data centers they've really done a lot of research the finding that it's not really the heat that's the issue it's. Dust and humidity, and so the building and doesn't find they can run them at seventy degrees celsius or hyatt hotter the problem is getting hot in that you can't have a human come in and service them but they don't. They don't but that people don't go and services things golf, sometimes you have to give to do a little bit of wiring or whatever the typically there module are they shut down the entire module yank it out.

[15:24] Yep lets that's one of the developments they found the make and save a lot of money on their on the cooling bills so make sure they got really good air filtration and for both humidity and dust and yet you like scuba diving, i don't mind it and you like data centers and use of other computers i think i've already and it all gonna natural. [15:58] Or so well so that they would it looks i wanna talk a little but it would just insider program you want talk with the insider program alright we'll let you do that okay so. I assume there must be some people here were run windows insider belts to. Anyone hear it to me in hs yes yes and it seems to be less exciting now back in the days you would be an entirely inside of or cover up bigger and t to get blue screens or sell. That doesn't seem to happen as much but well depends on which ring you're on i suppose. It's so so basically the windows insider program is it away for microsoft to get many many more people test scene there, their windows product and and then they've extended this other products like. X box office success excedrin and basically it's a way that microsoft get feedback on features can't keep acting performance get in windows is incredibly important to get feedback and hardware to allow. Microsoft two. Produce a better product that cynical people say it's a way to hot not hire developers re hire testers and just put it all out on the users but. It really isn't that it's a but. If you go down this offer development what is an element of that i'm sure i'm sure it if it saves the money they won't be getting any but the such university when it comes to windows out in the real world, vs what you can possibly happen a data center for testing that it's much much better for microsoft. And they also will do it with feature so though sometimes sent certain features to certain users in certain beast of the users and build compare how people except certain types of features weather works well and that sort of stuff.

[17:37] And especially if you got older hardware or esoteric hardware that something that microsoft wouldn't necessarily have access to in their test, labs it it's really good feedback to them and for us to know whether you're your device can handle some of the new features but also they wanna get that lemon tree back that, hey this combination of video card storage controller and wife i controller seems to be problematic and you would never really seen that combination before so we are really tested it, what and that they have run the problems but by people have a tendancy to put their secondary computer on the insider build so they didn't get some of the higher end hardware, a fire and video cameras on the inside of bill too much sleep didn't really discover their problems and tell they released but. No system is perfect but i guess another big thing that the real reason for this is because every six months microsoft's coming out with the new version of windows ten worse back in the day would be every. Could be three to five years within the new version of windows ten or do windows and how much you call the service pack a new version which case it be approximately every two years lol you and then windows seven and one, ridiculous of him at two thousand nine and one service pack in what two thousand and twelve to the load doesn't wanna, and that was it so for consumers is pretty easy weather on the insider build or not you get the updates usually right in the middle of an important meeting. But and your continually updated never six months there's some features that most living you never really notice for corporations becomes much more.

[19:10] Popular because they just can't understand how to upgrade every six months late. You mean update upstairs week of sorry update every three vx yeah might be up they might not be upgrade sometimes it's not that should i spend alot of my time actually talking to businesses about how to. It just updates and upgrades and how to think about that now to manage it because it is a new frontier for them. For the idea of this the rings microsoft in their own internal testing may have rings there's like the slow ring the fast ring they have a skip ahead rain. And then really in your heart ration you should have the same sort of right similar brings people in your organization that are okay this offer earlier and then others that are later because. You can spend a lot of time tested and year is just like it outside your knocking of discover everything internally it's a big mind shift on a different way of working to for processed you organizations even standardized on one servicing channel are having trouble, this keeping pace what's the service in general so it's of outside of the insider, the rings are insider branches of microsoft has really three.

[20:19] Four i guess of the rings or servicing branches for.

[20:26] Of release offer not not the inside of bill so that god current branch which is what most poem users use my does your of a choice well yeah but well. Get pretty much you do while but and. If you're using current brat you get updates as soon as they become generally available. Than about current branch for business which typically falls about two to three months after that but after they've had enough feedback from the current branch users to find out that it really is a stable they believe is soap. Current branch are it late be as right leep it an accident and then there's. Then after the other side concurrent grant for business there's a long term servicing branch which is really designed for kiosks and things like that shit's. Yeah there's right and then there's a served one which is really just a ring and. Can't remember what it's called now it's just do the terms giving me but it's platform early release group which is typically the latest version of the surface yelp. Common issues from del common machines from hp things like that but the ones at the. Some lot of rigorous testing on themselves up so that's kind of. The rain that that's only useful if you've got some of microsoft provisioning tools like sister configuration manager because it identifies those for you and let you know that a we've really test the updates on these and if your business running them up you might wanna.

[22:02] Release them a little bit earlier than that current french for business there available to you but. So it's kind of another ring kind of another service and channel but it's not. So to sign up you just you could do it actually they hit the it since they have insiders that window stock com but really it just go into your windows ten machine and go and updates.

[22:26] Okay and the other was something else you want to talk about it you wanna talk about they look at that's it wants to install a cumulative update. That could be a problem could it off but you can just go here and i just have it on the fixes and drivers for this particular computer but you can choose which of enrolled you can choose. The active and the skip ahead with your right now but right when they get ready to released the dip their developers don't stop. So some people will go ahead and what's called the skip ahead and they'll start working on, the next version of windows some testers well as well as some users one thing that may be where they've mention night i believe it's still current currently problem if you get onto insider builds you can get off them. Except for very narrow window that after a future release actually does come out at that point you can actually go back to the release channel but other than that narrow window of a couple weeks, the only way to get back off of that is true basically reinstall windows eight so yeah there's that two weeks where the current and the, and the release of the same but actually um i didn't hook up your today reset this pc. And you could just do it you can reset your pc just from here and you can save some of the settings so it sounds like the old days of when you had to restore pc that may you had to go get your floppy site. Get yes. So if if if if if your order if you're on twitter and you follow don sr car i she actually tweets.

[24:05] Regularly about the latest insider builds but she also tweets when that two week window is, let you know that you can talk now is your time to get off the train and and lock in to either another ring or on or off the insider program for a while. Yes i use to do that with my being computer and then when it gets closer to release time on my main computer at my work computer i don't get to control but my main home computer and i just switch it back in for. Heard any rumors for microsoft. No have you yeah you're talking some you devices coming up by david what the microsoft's continue other continue to have rumors about microsoft coming out with the few days i like the rivers don't know, no can do perhaps okay so some of the but we have to careful because you got nba slide. True but i i have not heard of anything under nba but also until somebody else was mentioned the rumor in a public forum we can really talk okay but in the last day both paul throttle and me to fully talked about three new. Code names for hardware projects come in a microsoft they got that what what is it the libra for. Carmel and something else with a drama mead is is this kind of tablet slide show iphones i drama will thing from it so.

[25:31] Huh that's really not met la dix hills right well is not because he's not a river rumor has it that. There will be some cheap surface devices were talking artie's earlier and for awhile microsoft had what was the surface three not the pro three that was running on adam ship that's no longer available and so. Right now the lowest and surface you can get is an i three and it's it's more of a. Lap top productivity machine than a tablet more but help you can use it definitely consume but it's a creation devices well right so. That's a gap in the line up that prt devices fill that one point. Or it hurts or answer for three of a three which was not a pro but for a ten inch one and but it looks like they're coming back with some devices in the well in the sub five hundred dollar range three to four hundred dollars. Right in the i pad pricing price point and now these are rumored not to be arm shift. But there's a lot of arm devices coming out third party manufacturers who should make their methods farm chip chirp to do that then. There's the surface up to that which we see videos of but tell us david what karma is not the new x box to working on it this mckay. And what's so no no no carmel is the surface pro six surface pro six such surface pro five kinda came out quietly for really calling it the five well they won't call those six or they will call the colonel new surface pro came out in the fall.

[27:09] And do they do have a service for four but they didn't do this whenever such a surface pro but i thought that's what the original surface. Hi five was called surface pro so talk about confusing and and get things running apes yes okay so what's libra. I'd i'd.

[27:29] Be there to low costs are so low cost tablet alright and a drama is the full double device. That's coming out baby maybe well that's the rumor alright i think the furnace rumors that low-cost surface device well yeah we've had speaking from a from people that we know at microsoft as well. Yeah. Yeah we're name names so that we don't get traveling control so it did not reach anyone starting rumors spread the rumors.

They say about twenty seven percent because ethanol mixes with water well it it releases a lot of the aromatic ss of that get to held in solution when concentrations above that. I really like i only is a lot of ice for with cuz i don't like ball for any type okay. Like that swedish whiskey hose up a mac mac myrna. Domain and then within a week of us we're just about ready to do it that some be released podcast called the podcast but we have their domain name to move a podcast called the podcast something like that yeah so we, we sold the domain to them what you so that for what a bottle of whiskey yet to the invite and they sent me cash instead oh that's no good are well, if they were they were they were in there and we have had email so figured that access to some the bourbons but. No but they did say if we ever come down that way we could do a tasting on the show. That's a good it's a good show that really then it really dose a job by then it fell bad about giving up to me to much better job with that we have a yeah you couldn't do to podcasts for billy doing one right that's fucked up okay of self. Or we'll try to do or will do a special topic are in the special debt right so where we were gonna be doing a review episode allow we're gonna get a bunch of, you accessories design for the surface and will review them with the remote so it will have a theme if there's a lot of the if there's an event like a microsoft conference will typically take use from that, sometimes we get suggestions from people like yourself for few twitter but it's usually whatever is top of mind, often times will talk about what we did that week i was always there mention i haven't written a microsoft exam in a long long time up i don't think i've written one this century, i should etc one in two thousand seven but other than that i had written on the century they didn't actually write questions for so wasn't quite fair to take to, think of the exams but it's so i took my first one in a long time at that one yesterday and passed it but it's the different testing experience when you never see any questions before, thank you.

[37:51] Hi as and doesn't deal close to like her i was interested hear that then you mention that microsoft was going to coming out with some smaller devices they seem to be. Hurting for smaller devices like physically smaller devices like phones yes and tablets. I wanna make things is i think a lot of people are now lot looking at their email on their tablet or phone rather than the laptop or equally. And because microsoft. I don't think they have a windows phone anymore right now and and hardly any months making a windows tablets.

[38:39] So is anybody making with those type thing of sir sam's on few others if you have. I'm at a visit to best buy and and staples almost all the time every other week and i haven't seen windows sam sung windows tablet or it or phone. Maybe they're out there but. Those two counties are bringing then i don't think the hot the surface tablet but yeah it's expand out of the icu right so that that that microsoft really didn't do well in that segment the yeah and. So now they're hurting because well they gives am very big advantage was okay now i access. It's easier accessory mail be at android then it is the windows right so i took it to put a great point sent and and now were windows is bugging people to. I'm microsoft budding people to have windows sunroof and. Sure of grab on to their android system yet and no it's it's like.

[40:03] Do what i think a lot of people would prefer to keep them silo ge keep their the windows stuff separate from your android stuff. And you think that bothers sick possible security issues like. If i have windows is and to your android system and if you have a pc security vf here you could. Who the beer losing information and both android and windows so what's it really good point so what bike or seeing right now is that microsoft because they're not a partly because they're not of. Selling hardware devices in that mobile arm space so that the android the ios, what think that what the really doing instead is are they going back to the roots say we're not really hard we're company, at the heart of things worse offer company and so microsoft is doing is shipping software like or connor like i'll look like office lens like word excel, that runs on android runs on ios and, providing the services that people are used to getting for microsoft regardless of platform and they're pretty the management tools so if you take a look at the most popular corporate management tool for managing, android devices and ios devices actually into so they're they're really doing well in corporate space.

[41:33] But if you look at the home users etc like said i read a lot email on my on my phone, i want to get home from the office i rarely take out my laptop you know about computers all over the house iphones usually nearby usually grab it may use that but guess what i am using outlook i'm using my live idea i'm using, get us out alive add one my making a buzzing my microsoft account but yo, i'd still using of microsoft services i'm still checking my outlook mail that look dot com as well as my office to sixty five so they got me on that side. But what we're seeing and remember the whole but microsoft first not surfaces they were really trying to find a space that didn't exist and create that reference platform for other vendors to jump onto. So now we're seeing maybe we see our base devices from h p from a surf from fujitsu from other companies are making those. Mobile type windows devices and restarted iced of love the dell venue pro and hopefully they come back up something like that. No but when you going to best buy and that. No the tablets or windows based anymore though they have all mike if you go to best buy the actual microsoft us section there that is their laptops and for services well surface is a tablet. Mean alot of people think so. I am in college service there there's saya why yeah but if we read the books on it but the thing is with a tablet you that have.

[43:10] Like unit tablets for two under dollar twelve hundred and fifty dollars so. Can you read the email on and say that i have a couple tablet around the place but you not gonna have of a couple five hundred dollar laptop or surfaces around well and that's not a threat of microsoft right people didn't buy them so they stop producing. Never is put them out without a phone and without a small tablet there, i kind of put themselves out of the game at that that's what the rumor is chosen not to play that game or they will with the remote right with room service like fort for top building cars anymore right that's okay visite again i setting a mustang they're not building cars by, so they decided they can't compete not market or it's not worth it to them let others build those devices and then do what they're good at. What is trucks suvs and.

[44:02] The business decision the end of the day who is now the now there bugging people with android devices to two. Have windows take over their android phone and that i don't do that kind of bugs me. To me they can't get an iphone six.

[0:00] Hello i'm court anna welcome to the universal windows podcast the show about everything windows such as service x box phones and the windows insider program. Here are your hosts the surface smith i'm calling smith. I'm david smith and we are the surface smith's bringing you episode eighty four congratulations david. Yes yes it a form that's older than your it is older than me but it's also eight episodes in eight weeks. Lucky eight and we have to jump through some hoops to get you there so we don't eight episodes in eight weeks we're gonna have to skip after a jump right ten just like windows did. Book, so welcome to the show this is a little bit different you're gonna hear some audio differences this time this is the first time in over a year we're doing something called a mix minus you can look that up we might talk about that after the show but basically david's in his home office i'm at my regular office, we're recording this with skype but we also have other things going on in the background, but the took a lot of effort for us to get to this point to make it work so i think we deserve a little bit, the of something from our listeners thick thick thick we've been working at this for a while trying to get this to work we think we finally got the sound quality would we would lay. Which is great for a couple reasons why as we can have gas. And row cast with having guests on site and then the other is that during whatever time of year that were traveling a lot we can just.

[1:35] One of us could you write was that just remote gas without remote guess before but the problem is remote guest don't hear are intro or outro and things like that they can't interact with the, the sounds that we've added to the show mostly to amuse ourselves but all the same sometimes we have real sound useful sound from tax. We're being flexible and and getting this episode so pretty please with the way things are going so far but i don't wanna waste lot time talking about. The matter details of the show i'd like to really get into that so that yeah i think next were gonna go to each year of the week that feature of the week thanks court anna so this week i have to go and buy a surface pen.

[3:06] Why well because i didn't have one on my surface book to i had one for my. The surface three a surface pro three by the way this episode i'm actually using three different surfaces i'm using a surface pro, to as my soundboard i am using a surface book to run the skype mix minus the i'm watching you through right now and i'm using my surface pro three to record everything. So what three running honey surface is you have running david for this episode one one okay for surface is all around but, i didn't have a pen dedicated to my surface book to an evidence of work a client site where i like to draw some diagrams and things like that so i bought a new pen and i realized, two things one awfully expensive hundred thirty dollars canadian but hundred they are american darn useful devices they don't come with a device that like talk about this i got the what i got the cobalt blue, which is but look like a pen however it's got it all you got a button on the back, from the top which is also your racer and also brings up your inking menu in windows ten and there's another button which is a right click button which you can use when your in can. How old is the one about how. Right in the early early ones are being held by the top well done about on top of that wasn't that what little but on the top is on the race so these are babies are.

[4:37] Pens made by intrigue the other interesting thing is there's no clip on them anymore.

[4:44] Alright guess because they're designed to make medically held against the against. The surface book two and the new hot surface pros but might might identically holes and has a clip get but the cook gets in the way i guess the new one to not have a clip so i thought i'd playing at but what i've done david is, started thinking get on that device which i'm really enjoying. Again i miss that too hot but i've reached out to a bunch of vendors to get us some sample intrigue pans that they make and we can try the muscle which ones we like. Excellent so feature the week is our. Is the microsoft surface pen and concept of thinking and we talked about that before no just remind everybody that if you are going to use ink with windows ten there's an application control panel to help train it to use your. I have to use your head writing style and recognize better so. There's our future the week and have anything you like that to that it.

[5:52] I think he got it sounds like you can do a lot of flexible opens with a, stop you story of the week alright lots of news to bring you this week david you're take the first stuff you new stories not take the last few. Sure as a result of amazon everyone hopefully knows that i am a amazon echo fanboy have one of my car have one in my office. And if you see a new look so an amazon echo looking is what. I would think i would think and look with the name of that would be a display added to an amazon echo but now it's basically a camera that allows you to look at things such as people and then how to. You choose clothes for them or you know decorate your room and also the thing so really an augmented reality tool for shopping freshly minced wait wait you're we we try to tell me that amazon built something. To help them sell you stuff we will go to far for the food of fuck yeah well it happened but yeah. You things are they like to. Sell other people things so they do have a two cartridge so david we just had our first skype glitch on the audio portion there. It's okay we'll live with it. So tell us more about this like it could tell you if that sure goes with those parents of those jeans make your ass look fat what would look what could it.

[7:29] Is well yeah i can try on clothes you can try different colors on your for decorating rooms and those who think so really i think it augment real is real the way to look at it. Okay man would you think have when you buy things on my new att u and i would buy it a shirt or something on line cuz you know what's gonna be pretty mush the same size and the same shirt as before. But there's probably other people that are a bit fussy or under called him then then you're i might be. I'm actually tempted to trash most my wardrobe underscore three or four different looks and just all the same and make it next.

[8:07] Is it the from over will take it to the good will store.

[8:13] Yeah i was like steve jobs's did you know and same thing brock obama did the same thing now is with grey suits you. Okay we'll so that's uh that's the amazon echo list it is still you and i would need. I have a twenty look fucking amazing i can imagine that simple yet so does the political market and you and i for cody okay what's next step in news david.

[8:42] So this is this been busy with a couple projects one's called free card which is a concept of a keyboard. That is the touch screen as well as the touch screen.

[8:54] So basically to have a touch screen he or a touch screen monitor and or you can think of is a dual mark do will. A dual monitor computer that you would then use another laptop so somewhere drama like a folding display so okay sold on. But a full keyboard alright so we got basically told size two displays that fold up to go there like a clam shell but one is a that they're both display but one can use a keyboard. Because of the are actors that are soft are your rotated ninety degrees and which case you have dual monitors and you just use an external bluetooth keyboard for. Okay that this is just a concept now how difficult could that be to make. All those people exist we already have the touch screen keyboards i think it would be that difficult.

[9:43] Okay now question for david i was pronouncing as seuss i don't yes properly pronounce it do you. No give some where there yeah i do but it's on the sound board it's is use and with the other um what's the other wave heard it's been yesterday since i have a basis in asus. Yes for a seuss okay be right meter it its a fucked civil design but it's nothing really extraordinary but the cool thing is somebody first now so my first my first worker. One of the other managers there talked about the idea that keyboard should be. Changeable so that you know if you wanna work in a different language you can work in a different language and effective it look back at the original service announcements member they have different keepers they're gonna do i can use a keyboard and now you know. Officers of different keyboards. These weren't necessarily dynamically changing keepers belie you have a different template and keyboard so i guess there always next station the old worker templates that we use the tape onto our two birds. Okay it make sense okay any other news related to that from what i have another one passes is this. Excuse braces a screen pad so what date does the replace the touch pad on a keyboard and. May the keep made it ain't no monitors lol i don't understand the value their.

[11:14] Well it's very much like the the apple touchpad okay with the track pad with the. Who intro up that change that will be interesting for soundboard that. I can think of tons of places where that would be handy but i'm not really sure how you would get to the point where applications would be that flexible by the developers you have to do something or that have to be some kind of a shame or something in between. Yeah yeah so the concept i can see how right now in union. Oh i didn't know hacker's i've been not one window and so the certain things that one out that would be nice to be able to have it the quick and double click console on that.

[11:57] And then different things for different apps and things for us i think the concept is our by think it would be i think it would be hard to get the applications that far ahead hand. It might not add much to the mets may five trip cost so you know high and laptops come of it and.

[12:16] You notice on a huge value but it didn't really cost to much at alright sounds good david. I'm just adding and you have a new story wanna talk but that's not other there anything else you want me to take some items stopped writing alright so i go start not not the staff dragon i'm gonna go with. Microsoft partners to roll out windows collaboration displays later this year so what is that mean the surface have been. Successful or not a measure of success little break on its numbers but they are still back ordered so unlike those original windows are t and up, original surface pro devices that microsoft had a warehouse full of that they have to get rid of and they took with nina remotely dot right down on, surface hubs are not in that category they are, back ordered people have to get the mail we got the new surface hub to it's coming out that's tie level of talked about that on the show and so microsoft, he is a lot only ems to build something called windows collaboration displays now these are not surface hubs than interesting thing about the collaboration display, is it doesn't have compute, so it works with a another windows ten computer that's casting to it in some way but is designed for collaboration and this is exactly is a your customers do what the service of any what, yeah pretty much but it's got touch it's got presents its got, set your cameras and things like that too low so it's more than what your customers do yes that it got its got more but that doesn't mean they'll they'll use it and it will run microsoft three sixty-five which we talked about.

[13:55] Last episode as a bundle of windows ten office three sixty five and enterprise mobility sweet with the security modules as well so, will start seeing announcements for those maybe we can get a demo device would be cool if you got one in your office and i got one in my office and we try to do a collaboration podcast.

[14:17] Yes so we can go to the for microsoft stores and collaborate from there or makes a ton of sense yeah race so that's that's it for that is i am doing okay i've got two that are kinda related. Okay the first first one is the snap dragon eight fifty from qualcomm so tell hold on one hundred eight forty five. I don't know i think they made one today that its available but the eight forty five a ball is the one that the first one i can run with just. The thing as it it thirty five a thirty five so i'm not sure i don't really track all of these so i gotta be careful with the week, call come numbers things because there's really two pieces in play here and will explain that so snap snap dragons i use. Arm processors but it to full chipset right its that reagan eight fifty is call com's version of the core texts arm chip and their chipset so i, there's another can call arm which actually designs the court tax and it's not right and qualcomm does, their own magic with some potentially produces themselves etc but there's a little bit confusion there because the snapper. So the numbering may have something to do with either court text number in or call comes on internal numbering at which i don't fully understand. We're lucky numbers yeah who knows but so i don't know what happen to the eight forty-five talked about the eight fifty so.

[15:53] The eight fifty is designed specifically for windows pcs. We had so were looking at bigger devices like laptops and convertibles higher clock speeds up.

[16:10] Better heat dissipation so they don't have to worry about the things that you have to worry about when you trying to jam everything into a phone because prior to the eight fifty qualcomm was really designing their chips. To work on mobile devices like phones and some tablets but the phones were there really their big market right dad, lately and the system so they had yo they lt the or the or whatever else, with the four g that the carriers need all that built in and the expectation was at the cram as much of it as possible to very small space is not gonna be a lot of room for batteries knock me a lot of room for heat dissipation so that the deal with all of those, wake fifty give them a little bit more breathing room excuse the terms and for talking about heat dissipation but that, they have a lot more flexibility david time in in the design because the expectation is it's going to go into a large chassis. What's your or your laptop right is not really designed for telephone or mobile phone so the real problem with her with, get the original ones was was performance right number was complex but the battery life people all kind of complained a little bit that i can't run x sixty four wraps but, really it was all up for saloon bar the performance hospital with burn the performance issue wasn't emulation layer that's part of it but also part of it was phillips the that the underlying hardware so this hardware, really takes it next level and should be able to provide better performance on those the next generation of windows ten arm pcs.

[17:48] What percentage of user needs can they get to it this the original one would been low and you'll travellers and so on and baby ten percent of computers, people all the time or maybe thirty percent you know this brings it out maybe to what of the computing power that may be half the people you must.

[18:05] And do you also look up i get to hire display resolutions as well so will see what happens it really comes down to will the developers in braces and we re compile their color code to run.

[18:18] If they don't why because i think i've if i'm not mistaken.

[18:25] The developer still have to re powder coat support sixty four bit are know they well depends on the app as if it's the next city six app it will continue. If it's if it's a legal store app which is having life because there are so few of them than what they have to do is choose a check box in when they can figure there are there and saw for that it just one last piece of news that exciting for me. Call comes including an lt modem on this chipset so all of these pcs will have lt which something i'm a fan of. Yes it all should all right so now related but not from qualcomm it from our. Right okay so arm makes the term chipset right so the chip designer arm that they're the ones that make the court tax which. Qualcomm could intercept reagan's right men do we should maybe get a hardware designer engineer in here talk a little bit more details about that so that we don't bleed people too far stray but here's, the interesting thing the court tax a seventy six cpu is targeted being thirty five percent more performance than its predecessor. And. The colonists in a lap top class shit they're expecting it like i said thirty five or potentially forty percent faster but. More than that they're looking at it i having have a much much better battery life.

[19:53] And they're looking at it from a performance perspective, being close to an i five seventy three hundred so, target squarely it right the center of intel's got intel's market space there and they expect that they put more cash memory on it it up with the core i seven. That's interesting cuz it if you really get up to that performs then people are choosing the arm ship because. Because it uses less battery people are choosing that arm chip because it's cheaper than all the other venecia arm. Who is. Get it does that it's the always on such as the battery is always on a few other things and it's and scholar right smaller devices so those two pieces of news the snap dragon eight fifty and the. Court tax a seventy six kinda go together my expectation is that the qualcomm.

[20:57] Right actually uses that core tech chip but i haven't got detail supporting that yet happening i think this fits in with a rumor that apple my two yeah. Arm purse that's your laptop sometime if there really is this much action the environment then apple would be fools to not consider. Okay so i got one last new stored around other news so first of all if we put this on one of microsoft yeah it would be kind of funny because of the of it. What is microsoft's market helping we would have a good laugh at it does like his cake up really co ia and so on some but we we didn't even think about it but somehow microsoft. Bucket house so here's the thing then next up but get help for seven point five billion dollars, a lot of people are upset that get have is an open source for positive re i gonna get that eric lenard or another developer on the show i think i joel, julie bare wanted to be on the show have them talk more about get up because they use it all the time i use a little bit, but it's an open source thing people get code from there the interact with it i been our website is is actually power to get hubby's project me up, to run our wordpress site that's on top of my classical server and it's all serve to microsoft azure from get apps i use it on occasion microsoft has put a lot of its documentation to get help to feel again have account you can go in and edit, microsoft documentation and then they hadn't done that was very interesting concept they have they published the doc was a let you go in and change the mets.

[22:32] Right it's cheaper than doing it them self what. Yes and i know most couples are very aggressive and attacked some even hi there documents right to be quite a change, so i'm not sure what this means for microsoft, it it is totally sign of the times because steve bomber will always campaigning against open source it was bad for the economy bad for national security all sorts of things and such as cut. Us a kinder gentler view of open source different guess guess so. I'd like to get some be on the show that can speak more knowledgeable about that in the next few weeks or months david what you think about what's you that shall we. Takes guess what eighteen yrs to produce and they didn't lay down of stock early enough so supply and demand is really jacked the price up, so you sold in most markets not sold in ottawa that i don't think it's old anywhere regular regularly in canada in chicago las vegas la new york places like that you find.

Here's what i am expecting to taste some juicy ness julius clean an intense delivery strands of honey and syrup, pave the way for videos and spices to get a grip complexity level just are startling and the weight just about spot on so based on gym ari's take on it i'm looking for ten right there was in a ninety four point five which is exceptional so let's take a look at it and the glass wine what, color legs in the dark and give me it is dark, darker than i actually expected her mama now this one by the way has no color in it it's all natural color from the sherry sherry casks okay so is that really good legs of us what's will up the glassy calm down that little leg there. And yo i'm a fan of adding water to whiskey but enough to do that just yet this one is very good on its own but as you know when you get about the twenty some percent alcohol. Is where the aromatic scott released this is forty three percent alcohol. By volume in there take a sniff of that smell vanilla coffee a little bit leather what a sweet. Yeah a little bit of set get coffee for sure what to get this ball on this one i think i got in las vegas.

[29:29] What do you think is not amazing on the initial just initial taste palate to finish it sweet salty. Little bit of stress yet it's both atom is amazingly smooth and now he added a drop of water weigh.

[29:49] Stop the fan you gotta see no start up for more sweet, and more complexity little or how to come out of it at a curiosity i'm i'm adding some some plain ol tap water here is there a particular type of water that would work best ideally you'd want water to still the river spay cuz that the space i was okay. I have some at home that this will do just fine with the way that.

[30:21] Yeah i like it i like my scotch is sweeter as opposed to smokey. And pd and and this fits the bill right is well thanks for taking time out of your busy day to share some with me when my pleasure icon but you but you know i would've, i will drink alone that's not a problem that i said that i would enjoy this alone as well but good to have that we have you with me and i think it will eat away at you and i drink together. Meeting room

• Microsoft demoed "meeting room" - prototype hardware that should make meetings and conferences more manageable. Microsoft's meeting room features a 360-degree camera and microphone array that can detect anyone in a meeting room, greet them, and transcribe what they say in any language. It also uses artificial intelligence to follow up on what meeting participants say in a meeting.

Clipboard is the easiest way to copy and paste just about anything between connected devices. OneDrive Files on Demand allows access to all files in the cloud without having to download them and use storage space on a specific device.

Cortana Skills Kit

• now in public preview in the U.S. Developers can build skills for Cortana by creating a bot and publishing to the Cortana channel of the Microsoft Bot Framework. This is available across Windows 10, Android, iOS and the new Cortana-powered Harman Kardon Invoke speaker.

Windows Story Remix

• Universal Windows Application, Windows Story Remix uses AI and deep learning to organize and transform photos and videos into stories. It will use the Microsoft Graph to connect users across devices. Story Remix brings memories, photos and videos together to create stories with a soundtrack, theme and cinematic transitions. Users can also create mixed reality by adding 3D objects to photos and videos to tell stories in a whole new way.

• will be a 50.5-inch, 4K+ device with a 3x2 aspect ratio that can be used in portrait or landscape mode. Each panel will be roughly between 55 and 77 pounds (25 to 35 KG), Up to four of them can be "tiled," side-by-side (in portrait or landscape)
